The winter Olympics will be hosted by Vancouver in my province early next year and I can say with absolute certainty this province will be paying for it for decades to come. These games have come and have been funded by serious health care and education cuts. The cost overrun is gigantic and climbing every day. Homeless people in Vancouver have literally been "bussed" to other communities in order to have a "clean" image. Infrastructure upgrades has sunk the province into serious debt.

Ya the Olympics are cool. But at what cost?

Beyond the laughs I'm getting for purely political reasons, you are spot on here.

Being in Wisconsin, I wanted NOTHING to do with Chicago getting the Olympics (many events were going to be held here). Our politicians were salivating over this in hopes it would be an excuse for them to put in completely unsustainable mass transit (choo choo trains/high speed rail). Tens of millions of dollars would have been spent on other worthless things for a one time event that would not bring a positive return on taxpayer investment.

Many people forget....Chicago is broke, as are many cities in the United States. Detroit, for God's sake, has bodies piling up in the city morgue because they can't afford to bury/cremate the bodies of dead poor and homeless people. We had no business getting these games and we should be thanking our lucky stars we didn't.

You ever notice how it's the people that suffer in recessions, but the government always manages to insulate itself and keeps on spending?

Exactly why I am glad it went to another country. We have too many problems to deal with than to put more recourses into hoisting an Olympics.

Let's be glad Chicago did not get it.

They did NOT deserve it. It would be like awarding it to Newark.

The corruption there would have stolen billions from the taxpayers.

If it's going to be a financial nightmare for Vancouver, can't imagine how Rio will fare. But, I am sure they know what they're signing up for.

A shame America didn't get it. Even more of a shame some are just trying to blatantly politicize it.

    Actually America got it. :)

As for US getting it, I think it's been here quite a few times in the recent past. 1984, LA and 1996 Atlanta. That's 2 out of 7 total events. That is quite a lot considering only a few nations in the history have ever hosted them and many never will.

I remember as a little kid in 1984 going to the Olympics and have never forgotten the
Pageantry and electricity that each event brought. And i think its a shame to get overly
political on every post we may disagree with. Chicago may not be financially ready to
host such an event but i cant help but be disappointed that Chicago did not get it. It
is an event that i would love to share with my children some day. On the other hand
Rio sounds like on hell of a party.

I'm gonna have to agree with the above statement. Were any of you seriously rooting against us getting the Olympics? Not necessarily the city of Chicago, but the United States? I find that hard to believe...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. LOL! Who gives 2 fux about the Olympics anyway?! There's always at least couple of different countries getting investigated for any number of reasons. It's why I don't watch it, OR pro sports anymore. Too much CORRUPTION!

Maybe this Forum should light some torches and storm the gates. You know, get **** done. Now pardon me while I go shove a kitten into a blender....

How about watching the Olympics for the right reasons. Tell me you don't get all mushy watching two or three individuals representing some underdeveloped country during the Parade of Nations. Or how about the individual who brings home a medal to an adoring country looking for anything to root for? The National Anthem does nothing nothing for you as the flag is hoisted front and center?
Wow... we've got some real hard asses here.

I think the Olympics should be held in one city (Athens comes to mind) every 4 years. Just like they were in ancient times. All participating nations can help to build and maintain the venues and infrastructure to support them. That way this massive expense of building new venues every 4 years in eliminated and nations don't have to sink into massive debt to hold them. Also, the athletes get to go to Greece every 4 years. Makes way more sense than spending several billion dollars every 4 years for venues that will sit largely empty after the games are gone. My 2 cents.

Seriously. I've heard about tradeshows where you have to pay a guy $60/hour to plug in a cord into an electrical outlet. Minimum time? 1 hour per instance.

They catch you doing it yourself, if you are lucky it's a fine. If you aren't lucky, it's a fine and there are a couple of Union "representatives" who remember your face in the parking lot.

That's not a Chicago thing. My company goes to trade shows all over the country, although none in Chicago yet. The following is typical.

    1. You cannot unload your own crates, it's done by some union, as much as $120 an hour.

    2. When the shows over, you can not pack up your own crates, they do it. Lots of damage from crappy packaging, and some items are always missing, last time it was a 42" TV, they filled the box with other items to hide the crime.

    3. Can not plug in anything electrical. Union only.

    4. They must set up any frames, walls, tables, etc. Union again.

    5. Unless extra "tips" are paid, expect your stuff to be the very last to be set up.

I have run into this also/\ in Philli. I plugged in an extension cord and got a stern reprimand from a union electrician at a trade show.

^^^^ Wow! ^^^^ Those stories, if true, are kinda scary if you ask me.

I did a few trade shows in France a few years ago, four or five of them, and I know some members here have the perception that it's a socialist/communist country (it was even described as a "shithole" recently, by a member who should be smart enough to know better), and I can tell you that in spite of those perceptions, my team loaded and unloaded, packed and unpacked everything we wanted to ourselves. We turned all our equipment on an off when we arrived and left as we pleased. In fact, we were never bothered by anybody in any way whatsoever at any time. If this is going on in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S.A., I'd be a little bit concerned.
