You are really doing a terrific job of that yard, dude! The whole layout is just very inviting and very tasteful IMO. Congratulations.

Our SoCal yard is still a mess. The previous owner had the house built 55 years ago, and he just put in a small patch of grass, some rather boring bushes (jade, ficus, etc. ... the usual supects, mostly), lots and lots of ivy, and a big pad of asphalt (which is nice for kids to play on, but it looks horrible). Fortunately, he also added a nice brick patio and what has become a rather large Magnolia for perfect shade. The ivy is now gone in 90% of the area, but we haven't figured out what and when we are going to replace everything with.

If I could make one suggestion, it would be to stucco those cinder block walls, or something equivalent. We had those same walls in Santa Monica, when we lived there, and I always found them especially dull, even when partially hidden behind vegetation.
    Alea jacta est!

Here's a shot I took tonight. Added the two Tiki Torches up above the Hut today so I thought I'd give'em a try tonight.
