Actually, the Kilpsch are -3 dB at 20Hz. The Ultra is flat to 18Hz (in 20Hz mode), and 14 Hz(in 15 Hz mode). I've meaured pretty good output at 13Hz with my duals. I've never seen any third party measurements of the THX subs , but I'd wager dual Ultras would crush the Kilpsch set-up there, in both output and extension.:)
Here's my in room response of the duals in 15Hz mode:

I would put my money on the PB13's in tandem as well. They are incredible subs for the money, and they are beautiful pieces of work too...the fit and finish is awsome.

I think that two PB-13 vs two Klipsch KW-120 Thx subwoofer

The dual Conquests would win in overall out put capability over the Ultras. But then the Ultras are more customizable and much better looking...;) One Conquest=~1.5 Ultras.

When I get back into HT --

The subs in my system will hands down be the VMPS Larger Sub -- at minimum 2 of them, at most 4 of them --

1000 watts going to each sub...

Each sub is rated at 120db at 20hz - all day.

The drivers are nothing impressive to look at. Neither is the sub itself -- but it utilizes an active 15,12 and a passive 15" in a push pull configuration -- with a slot loaded bass for insane output and extention.

Not to mention probally the most accurate bass you will hear...

There are so many subs out there in that price range...

    sublarg.jpg

This Subwoofer must be added to the list:D

If they had the Conquest in stock I'd get that first then the PB13 ultra. My basement room is only 16x14x7 so any of the two above would crack the drywall:D

I agree one sub will murder that room. I run dual SVS PB12/Plus 2 and @ a 1/4 gain on both subs its unreal in there. I ran them a few DB hot once and just abused my body and ears with so much pressurization from those things. I was considering adding two of the Cylinder subs on top of that, but my goodness that would just be nuts in there. My room is slightly larger @ 14x22 but OH MY, those subs you guys are talking now are serious business, and that's a good thing. :D

What about the Mark seaton submersive. I just got the svs pb13 ultra, but over at AVS everyone loves the submersive. It apparently beats out the ultra, in every category. My ultra is huge, and has more then enough bass for me. The submersive, doesn't have the looks of the ultra, and I was trying to keep the wife happy, plus they are made in my home state, and there is a waiting list for the submersive. I think the JL fathom was the only sub they could find to compete with it, but the submersive is 2000$ cheaper.

Anyway, it looks like the submersive is definitely the sub to beat for under 4000$, and it comes in at 1900$. I haven't read of anyone saying they liked another sub better then the submersive, except for the looks. Anyone wanting a bigtime sub, should definitely put it on their short list. I don't think any of the major sub companies can compete with it.

bev, not sure how the submersive would stack up against the pb ultra. Both serious subs for sure. Mark Seaton sure seems to enjoy sub design and from many comments I have read from him, has his own design criteria and goals in mind before he starts something, then works to reach those to his high level of standards. Which from what I have read, like you, gets lots of praise from owners. To me the only draw back compared to SVS is his company's small size. Hence the waiting list (along with the number of people wanting this).

On a side note, what did you think of the buttkicker? I have been getting the urge to explore this approach a little to still be able to feel some bass when listening at night when my youngster is in bed. How would you rate the value to cost ratio of shakers?

The buttkicker I have is the small one that is made for gaming. In all reality, no joking, the ultra literally sends more vibration then the buttkicker I have. Now, if I ran my buttkicker with the crossover set higher I would get more response from it, but then it would almost always be sending vibrations to me.

I have never used the larger versions in the 500$ and up range. I'm sure they would add alot more then the 150$ one that I have. I actually unhooked the amp to mine after I got the ultra, because there was really no point in having it anymore. The ultra kicks way more butt.

But like you say, it might work out good for you at night. If you got one of the larger ones that you attach to your couch, it would probably be really cool. Mine was hooked to a video game racing setup I have. It would send vibrations to my chair whenever I ran off the road, or bumped another car. It worked pretty well, but it all depended on how the game used bass to activate the buttkicker.

    .

Some people over there love the Submersive. Many people like other subs. It is a good sub. Not sure about it beating the Ultra in every category as you put it. Also, the Ultra is a ported single driver sub, while the submersive is a dual sealed design. Very different beasts. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Dude honestly thats a really good move. I really don't like that sub at all. It has viscous output but no musical abilities at all. It reminds me of the SVS subs I have Installed over the years. Same kinda deal.

Absolutely . I can give you a good rule of thumb.

Front of room go 0 phase
Side walls go 90 phase out
    back wall go 180 phase.

This is a very good starting point. Most of the time you can set it and leave it in these positions. Rarely do I have to change them. Unless the room is very long, I have to play with the phase out of my standard setting.
