Might try vinyl

Ok, all the vinyl talk in this forum is making me want to get a TT. Problem is, I don't want to spend much money. I just want to get a feel for its sound.
I'm looking at the Rega P1. I believe they retail for $399. Then I'll have to get a phono pre. Again I'm not looking to spend much there. Do you think an entry level set up like this would sound better than my Rega Apollo cdp? Should I just stick to cd?

If you are comparing a $400 TT to a $1k CDP that wouldn't be a fair comparison but I don't think you will be disappointed with the P1 and some decently cleaned vinyl.

Darque Knight,
I hope that little character is only the upgrade bug. If that's the devil, I'm in big ****.
Ok ok, don't know if you guys are just saving me from more hair loss due to maintanance and set up or what. So would the Rega P1 set up give me a good analog sound?
Or would SACD be the better choice? -
The Rega will give you nice analog sound and a wider selection of music. You could go the SACD route but you probably won't find as much music in the used market as you will with LPs.
-
You should also consider buying a record clamp for the Rega. Here is one that I recommend. You might shrink at spending another $100 but the improvement in sound quality with the clamp engaged will amaze you.

you can't compare the two different formats like that.. one being analog and the other being hi rez digital audio. both are good.
I think you're on the right track with your choices with the Rega and the pre amp. does the Rega come with a cartridge? if so. they are usually pretty entry level ones.. which are ok for just occasional listening. but to take it up a notch you'll most likely want to upgrade that cartridge later on.. $$, then of course you need cleaning supplies for the vinyl $$, then some vinyl of course $$, then a record clamp of some sort $, then..$$ you see my point?
VS
SACD player and some SACD's $$ no cleaning supplies, no cartridges to change out. If you bend the stylus it's for the most part done for and you then need to replace it.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Vinyl has a high buy-in so to speak. But, once you got everything you need, you can surpass CD with musical results.

Yes, that is the devil and yes, if you proceed along this line of inquiry, you will end up in big ****. A wife (or a second wife if you are already married) would be less aggravation...and probably cheaper to maintain because most wives have a dollar or two of their own.;)Proud and loyal citizen of the Digital Domain and Solid State Country! -
Thanks for the tips guys. Ok, I got it, record clamp, better cartridge, cleaning supplies. But this stuff sounds kinda scary.
I won't be able to do everything at once, but slow upgrades will definitely be done. I could start with a clamp and later down the road get a new cartridge, etc.
In the next month I'll bee going to the dealer to demo Mark&Daniel speakers and he has a lot of TT's. I may demo the Rega there if he has the P1.
Are moden mainstream jazz like Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, etc available on LP? -

ROTF:D. Not married, that's why I'm thinking about going analog. Still have quite a bit of free time. Been married to digital long enough. Time to try something new (or is it old:)). -

Absolutely! New and used. -
Hearingimpaired,
Alright! Now I'm really excited. I find that these mellow jazz stuff have the best recordings. -
I guess I always assumed you listened to vinyl. Be aware, you may not want to put up with the characteristic CD sound anymore once you get started on the journey.
madmaxVinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -

He's got a great Rega CDP. I bet he will be thoroughly unimpressed by vinyl by comparison at a $400 level. My guess is that you guys are just trying to suck another one into the fray like you did me.
. . . guys are a nothin' but a bunch of weirdos with a white van and candy. Stop trying to lure the innocent with promises that they'll be dropped off where they started when you get done with them. Vinyl is a black hole and your wallet is a small star. -

Just trying to keep it real. Tell him to eat a bowl of rice krispies when he's spinning a CD...ah, the snap, crackle, pop, the warmth, mellowness, the scratches, the pits, the record cleaner, the vacuum, the flattener, the isostat thingamagiggy, don't forget the clamp, oh boy I just love vinyl.
