He's got a great Rega CDP. I bet he will be thoroughly unimpressed by vinyl by comparison at a $400 level. My guess is that you guys are just trying to suck another one into the fray like you did me.

    3 dimensional sound?
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've looked around on ebay for vinyl and found some I really want. I see that there are different types like 150g and 200g. I'm assuming the heavier vinyl are suppose to sound better? They're more expensive than standard.

Now, I have played around with vinyl many years ago but never heard them on a good TT. Even though the TT wasn't great, there was a nice sense of continuity to the sound that I was able to pick up right away. I was just hoping that I could get a lot more of this on a good entry level TT.
I read a review of the Rega P1 on Canada HiFi and it was mentioned that a good cdp was better for HF and LF extension, but overall musicality went to the Rega. That's the review that got me thinking.
HF/LF cut off is fine by me. I"m running single driver speakers that won't do HF ext. and LF ext. Bass is probably good down to 50Hz. So that will not be an issue for me.

This is so frustrating! I had just started saving up for the ToTL Omega speakers and came across that Rega P1 review. AAAHHH!

Those pics just made me feel better:).

180 gram or 200 gram does NOT always mean better sound. I have a 180 gram REM Automatic For the People that is beat hands down by the original pressing. Generally it's true but certainly not always. One thing I'm finding quite consistant....so far every German pressing of an LP I've bought sounds better than it's USA or Canadian counterpart. I read somewhere that Germany uses much more virgin vinyl than in the US and Canada. Virgin vinyl equals quieter background equals better sound.

You will find that can happen with Japanese and Holland pressings as well. It still depends on who did the mastering. The Steve Hoffman forum is a good source for quality recording discussions on digital and vinyl.

Ok, all the vinyl talk in this forum is making me want to get a TT. Problem is, I don't want to spend much money. I just want to get a feel for its sound.

I'm looking at the Rega P1. I believe they retail for $399. Then I'll have to get a phono pre. Again I'm not looking to spend much there. Do you think an entry level set up like this would sound better than my Rega Apollo cdp? Should I just stick to cd?

If you truly want entry level pricing, a vintage late '70's Thorens TD-160 or TD-145 (same as 160 with auto stop), will set you back $200 to $250 on eBay and compare with most new new tables costing 4 or 5 times as much.

Thorens is a "Mercedes" level table that holds its superior performance for decades. The 145 and 160 models can be easily and economically upgraded by a mile from their excellent baseline performance.

I currently own a TD-115, 2 TD-145's and a TD-160 ranging from stock to moderately tweaked and all deliver superior champagne sound on a beer budget.

You can download Adobe Acrobat pdf format copies of the original Thorens User / Service Manuals after creating a simple username / password account at http://www.vinylengine.com. Fixing hum is even addressed in these original manuals as Thorens was not yet installing separate ground wires on the units from the factory at that time.

I follow these daily as several are generally available on eBay at any given time. Price in Polk F/S thread is OK too if you want to add ground wire to tackle hum fix (which should be done to any of these models anyway).

Hey Joe, I am going to try another supposed giant killer; the mighty idler wheel drive Lenco. I got the wood for the heavy layered plinth, just need a round tuit to cut and build it. I'll use my current arm/cartridge. I picked this one up on the cheap before the price started to go up on the old dogs.

    Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
As much as I'd love to get one off ebay, I really want to support my dealer because he's one of the few here in Toronto who's trying very hard to keep 2ch alive. He has a team that could build/mod/tweak tube/ss equipments, speakers, etc and he's given me excellent deals on all the things I buy. All my audio purchases in the past few years have been from him only. He also does consignment, so there are plenty of used gear at great prices.

    He's a Rega dealer, that's why I may get the P1.
I may be pushing it with this, but here's a TT he's selling... Oh yeah, for all you Americans, don't get scared by the price. That's in Canadian Dollars http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/117448-sota_sapphire_wsumiko_mmt_and_nagoka_50/

Yup, that's a sexy TT. It's quite a bit more than what I'm willing to spend, but we'll see. I forgot to factor in the price of a phono pre. I'll see what other TT's he has next time I go visit.

AAAAAH you effers! I just opened another door in audio hell;).

ok, I called my dealer earlier today. He said to skip the P1. He said he has a much nicer Music Hall and he has a nice phono pre as well.
I am sooooo excited!!!! I'm going there on Tuesday to get the TT. Yeah! I will have to check my funds to see if I can get the Sota.

btw, I found a super kick **** vinyl store. A whole floor dedicated to vinyl (used and new). They even have new releases, and hell, even black metal on vinyl! So today, I picked up Queen (QueenII), Queen (A Day at the Races) and Carpathian Forest (F*ck You All). Both Queen albums are American re-issues and Carpathian Forest is UK pressing. Going back tomorrow before work to get more vinyl.

:D:D:D Can you tell I'm excited? My first TT rig:D:D:D
