If you're on a cable modem, the number of users in your area can affect your speed. I should try it again later tonight.
    And here we go.

That's nice--I have heard that the US is light years behind other countries like Japan in terms of broadband speeds. I wonder, what does your result look like using a US test server? Such as one in NY or CA.

For kicks I tested from my house to the server you used in Japan
    373036954.png
My download was close to the same but my upload was only 1/3 of my local speeds.

For easy comparison here's mine to a local server at the same time. (similar results to a server in CA as well for me)

I could get 50 down/20 up with my FiOS if I chose to purchase that plan for $140/mo , but I really don't have the need right now.

But DAMN---I just looked at the plans on the FiOS site (linked above) and I should be getting 10 down. Hmm, I'll have to ask about that-I'm only getting about half and my bw shouldn't be affected by my neighbors (only my torn up lawn)

What do you pay for that connection?

    Sal

Rental Equpment (cant buy it due to property of NTT Comm Japan)is 10 a month for a dual box setup then another 25 a month bucks , one box has the fiber line run directly into. The other is called an Enu box which is basically a modem, from there I run a LAN cable to my home switch which makes every room in the house go "hot" for 100 meg connection. In the theater room is a dlink switch so I run CAT 5 to all my components so they can see the 100 meg also. Also run DLink Dual band N routers for whole house wireless and a linksys for outdoors and the garage.

    Heres to LA, CA

    373066930.png

    And to NY

    373067768.png

My uploads are way faster than my downloads from NY, for some reason, I barely pulled 5 meg down.

Is that 1 fiber or 2 fibers? One in / receive and one out / transmitter? One fiber only which does both transmitter / receive, but I think you got 2 fibers.

Man, you gotta admit-technology is pretty amazing. 219ms ping over 7600 miles. Even my ping was 456ms to Japan(less than 1/2 a sec). Just plain cool stuff.

Yeah single line in(comes from outside to the drop box), then ethernet cable into the Onu box. From there I go out of the box into my switch for whole house fiber connection. See pic below.

Box on far left is fiber box with single ethernet out which goes into 2nd box they call Onu box(simple modem). This one has 4 outputs on it which I run into the whole house switch. The black motorola box is for my Vonage Line so I get a local US phone number while in Japan( Vonage is awesome by the way), and then I run a single cable to my D-link Wireless the last box on far right. Roughly 35 bucks a month here. I think true Gig fiber line is going to be nuts. I'd love to try it for a month or so, but it requires different install. By the way installation for fiber here is roughly 25,000 yen (250-260 bucks) but they waive it with one yr service contract.

The cable is so thin, but I tried to capture an image of it(bottom wire coming in next to ethernet cable).

From what I heard Verizon is soon to be offering fiber if Im not mistaking but it's going to cost.

Yeah its blazing fast. It should be stateside soon, but like I mentioned before, it sounds as if it will be very expensive. What's the best bang for buck service being offered now? Is it cable or ADSL?

The speed test from Japan explains why I can't compete on Japanese servers, for an online game I play. It also explains why they seem to do fairly well playing on west coast servers.

I have been considering switching to a faster provider.
I am spending 19.95 plus taxes and fees per month.
Higher speeds will mean higher costs.
I can't type that fast and my wallet is not that big.

I'm with you jvc...we're too cheap to upgrade so I run about the same speed barely adequate...but certainly better than dial up.

Japan...man that's incredible sherardp! I'll be in Beijing in August, hope the free internet access they will provide will get me out of the Verizon ghetto?
