I couldn't find a stand I was confident in, without spending almost what I did on the 9's. So I built a set. They are a hexogonal column. Depending on your diy skills, they are pretty simple. I drew up designs on a CAD program, if I can find them........

These are filled with about 20 lbs. of sand in double freezer bags.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

I purchased a pair o Target MR28 stands. The description of the top plate dimension for the 28" model is wrong on that webpage, it should be 6x8. The stands just got delivered this afternoon. The whole package weighs about 68lbs. Still haven't assembled them yet. I'll probably head out to Home Depot this weekend and buy some play sand to fill them up.

    Nice looking stand LessisNevermore.

The base reminds of the base on Sanus Ultimate Foundation stands. What kind of material did you use for the column and the base? Steel? And how tall is your stand?

I built these for my 7's. I currently have two of them apart, doing a complete repaint.

    Thanks!
The base was inspired (plagiarized) from the Sanus.
They are made entirely of MDF, I considered plywood, but chose the less resonant MDF. A tip: MDF soaks up paint like you wouldn't believe.....use a few coats of primer, and sand smooth, then paint.

    They measure 30 1/2". I built 2 sets with one 4'x8' sheet.
Total cost: around $50. (MDF, wood glue, tape, sand, paint)

Only 1 cat, and she has no interest as long as something is on top the speakers. I've actually tried to knock the LSi9's off the stands, and it would take a lot of force to get them to tip over. There's over 25 lbs of lead shot in each speaker stand.

The other speakers are my Magnepan 1.6QR's for 2 ch music.

    Anyone ordered Skylan stands before?

I was browsing through audioasylum, and a couple of people there seem to like the Skylan stands.

But one thing I don't get is, those people over there practically scream in your face that the Skylan stands are a BARGAIN. But when you look at the prices, the 2 column stands will cost you $265 Canadian dollar, not including shipping. With the exchange rate it is today, plus shipping, the final cost will come out to be more than $300 U.S. dollars.

It's one thing when the exchange rate was $1 U.S. dollar = $1.5 Canadian dollar. Yeah, the Skylan stands were a bargain. But it's quite something else now that the Canadian dollar has achieved parity with the U.S. dollar.

And I did a bit more digging. The top and bottom plates are constructed of MDF. The 2 columns are constructed of polymer, aka plastic. MDF boards and plastic columns cost $300? And people on audioasylum keep saying this is a bargain? I don't understand the logic of those people.

Use the search feature...I sound like a broken record. There have been many threads on speaker stands for the 9s and I always recommend Skylan highly. I purchased 33in 2 column stands with a base plate to match the 9s, I can't remember what I paid but it was around $250 shipped.

The $ has been losing value recently, most of the threads recommending them are probably a few years old, as I read the same ones and purchased based on their recommendations...a few years ago.

I will check when I get home but should have some pics of the 9s on the Skylans. Check my sig below, I currently use them in my PC rig and used them previously in my basement rig.

The cat's 15 yrs old and is well aware of what happens when she gets close to the audio equipment! She has no front claws, and I have to say has never been a problem when it comes to the 2 ch or HT systems. The duck decoys take up most of the top of the LSi9's, so she doesn't even attempt it.

Gaara, approximately how much does each stand weigh, unfilled? And how is the quality of the construction, those MDF boards, polymer columns. And how are those polymer columns, are they rigid and thick plastic?

I did a search online for lead shots. You can buy lead shots from places that sell BB gun shots. They are pretty expensive. One bag, I think about 25lbs (don't remember the exact numbers) costs something like $80.

I think you are better off buying play sand from Home Depot. Just make sure you dry that sand in your oven before you put them in your stands.

I don't remember, search for skylan with my name as the user, if I ever mentioned it it would be here. I think they were relatively light, maybe 6lbs each or so. With sand I would guess they are around 40lbs each or so.

Quality of construction is top notch. I had metal stands before and much prefer these. The plates are nice also, I love the rounded look. The posts aren't plastic, they are some sort of polymer, check the site for details. If I ever need stands again they will be Skylan.

Go to any sporting goods store that sells hunting/shooting supplies and look in the shotgun shell reloading section. Lead has gone up in price, but a 25 lb bag of #6 lead shot was around $38 a couple of months ago.
