Since I see all the razzing about the 200 wpc Club I figured we could see who qualifies and who is on the threshold. I made it at home and on the road too. I'm not going to go into what all is in the storage bedroom. Only what is currently in use in an active rig.

Home Rig:
Parasound HCA 2200II @ 250 wpc x 2

The Ride:
Memphis Audio - 16-MCH1300 @ 230 wpc x 2 & 600 wpc x 1
for the front Hertz HSK's Mid Bass & Subs

Memphis Audio - 16-MCA3004 @ 230 wpc x 2
for the front Hertz HSK's Tweeters

Damnit Chuck, now I have to think and that's not my strong suit.

I "think" I have 1525 total available as I type. This is subject to what's in the rig at the time. I've had 3400, I've had 285. Yes, I have been over the 200 club for quite some time now....

    Not that it matters.

Been there, done that, went back to what sounds good. Still have enough amps around here to be pushing 2,440W to my 2 channel rig. Add 900W to that and you'd have my 7 channel max.

2 Channel Sounds better at 410W total. Higher power isn't always better, have fun kids.

    2 x 555II's in the house.

Yet I listen to my 50watt tube hybrid integrated for about 95% of my listening. It replaced a tube pre + 555II in my 2ch setup.

Only time the big boys are used are in my HT, and for live concert dvds.

My main rig is a Phase Linear 400 (200WPC) driving SDA-SRS 1.2TLs. I also have a mammoth Heathkit AA-1640 (200WPC) waiting for me to fix the thing, and an Adcom GFA-1 (another 200) I haven't found a use for. I'd like to get a McIntosh MC2205 or 2300.

Power requirements depend on the speaker. Higher power by itself is not a virture, but when needed it's nice to have. Considering that I can get my PL400's meters up to 125+WPC without much trouble (and easily 200 when I was driving McInotsh speakers) I'd say that for my situation there's nothing overkill about 200 watts and up.

Of course, if I had a set of Klipschorns I'd probably be running a nifty 20WPC tube amp.

I'm currently a zero short of being a part of this club

I've previously owned an 800 Watts/ch amp (into 4 ohms; my speakers at the time), and a 1200 Watts/ch amp before that. I suppose if you average it out over time I'd still be above 200 Watts!

Well, I was a happy member of the 200+ club until I sold Chuck my HCA-2200ii (see 1st post).

But hey, according to some of the bench tests done on my Onkyo SR805, it can push something like 270wpc into 2 channels at 4ohms each for a limited time :) It can hit the peaks, that's for sure.

It also made my Mirage M3 sing pretty good when I auditioned them for the eventual buyer. He kept raising the volume until I thought the Onkyo was going to shutdown, but it didn't, it kept on sounding great.

My next time around, I'm going to get more efficient speakers and run them with cleaner low power amps like Heiney is talking.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

AR9's get biamped by 2 haffler 500's 4 ohm load, so I suppose its 500X2 to the woofs and 500x2 to the rest.

its not about the power in this case, its each amp not working as hard to drive the 9's. it made it cleaner especially at higher volumes.

its a silly amount of power to be sure, but I have had 40 watt per channel rigs sound sweet to. its all about application.

hell, the little Ipod amp I got from george sounds surprisingly good on my Rogers, and thats a whopping 10 wpc or so

theater is well above 200 wpc I suppose

approx. 400 WPC from a Carver PM-350. Rated for 350 WPC @ 8 ohm, 450 WPC @ 4 ohm, and since my speaks are about 6 ohm, I'm guessing about 400 WPC.

And damn, does it sound good. :D

McIntosh used to demo the ML-4C speakers that way. Plug each one directly into the outlet and listen to the 60Hz signal.

    Krell KAV 250 A here.
    250 Watts in 8 ohms.
    500 Watts in 4 ohms.
    1000 Watts in 2 ohms.

My Thiels are 4 ohm speakers (give or take). So, that would put me at 500 WPC.
Ample... but, I'm sure they'd sound better with Krell FPB power. Someday....
