This is the problem, You are an Original ST Trekkie and that's it. BOO!

The TOS fans, of which I am one, don't seem to have the lowered expectations of fans of the spin offs.

To my knowledge, and I would appreciate the correction if I am wrong, none of the spin offs attracted the caliber of respected sci-fi writers that TOS did nor did any of the spin offs receive nomination for or win any prestigious sci-fi awards or other awards like TOS did. TOS was nominated 12 times for Emmy awards in various categories (never won) and nominated 8 times for the Hugo Award (won twice). Do any of the ships from the spin offs hang in the Smithsonian, where the TOS filming model now resides?

It is unassailable that the cultural influence of TOS is orders of magnitude above all of the spin offs combined. Kirk and Spock are cultural icons. What about Picard, Janeway, Picard, Sisko, and what's-his-face (I can't even remember the name of the captain from the Enterprise series)?

TOS was the worst, All the sets were the same, the special effects sucked.

TOS's effects were spectacular for a television series in the late 1960's. The effects budget was more than the production budget of some "regular" shows and contributed to TOS being the most expensive television production at the time. The sets were the best they could do with the budget they had. A lot of the set budget was eaten up by the ship's interiors, which were deemed to be unnecessarily "extravagant" and detailed by network execs. The bridge set was extremely expensive for its day and Roddenberry had to fight hard just to come within the neighborhood of the level of detail he wanted.

Unfortunately, even though TOS was a popular show and was able to "cash in" on the "space age" craze at the time, the show's production costs were just to much for network exec's to swallow. Gene Roddenberry tried, unsuccessfully at the time, to get network exec's to see that TOS had social and artistic value which justified its high production costs. The "suits" position was that advertisers who sponsored TOS were not paying any more for a minute of ad time than those who sponsored some cheaply made western. Therefore, TOS was eating into network profits and had to die a slow, painful death.

The problem I have with all ST spin off's was the casting, FALSE!

Name one character in the spin offs that has the stature of Kirk or Spock. Even TOS's secondary characters Chekhov, McCoy, Sulu, Scotty, tower over the secondary characters of the spin offs. The only mildly memorable character from any of the spin offs was Seven of Nine from Voyager...and that was only when she started wearing that tight catsuit.

not a single good character in any of the shows. FALSE!!

Well, I've seen every episode of TOS and I have my 33 favorite TOS episodes in my video collection. I never get tired of watching them. I watched the premier of ST:TNG, thought it was boring drivel and just "checked in" every now and then to see if it got better. It didn't. The series finale was stupid and came seven years too late. I know Roddenberry was spinning like a jet engine turbine in his grave. Voyager: I watched the series premier and finales. Good riddance DS9: I watched the premier and the episode where Sisko went back in time and met Kirk and Spock during. I thought that episode was brilliant. Other than that, it was just a weekly parade of alien freaks. Enterprise: Never watched a single episode...read the synopsis and just wasn't interested.

I wish all the characters from the spinoffs would just be put in a cargo container and flown into a black hole.

No good interplay between the characters, too much drama and not enough story or action to keep the series interesting. WHAT!!!, FALSE!!!

Can a true Trekkie ever tire of hearing Bones say "dammit Spock", or "he's dead, Jim"? What about Spock raising one eyebrow and deadpanning "fascinating"? What about Kirk always trying to score some **** at the most inappropriate times? What about the implied romantic relationship between Sulu and Uhura? Was Kirk "tapping" yeoman Rand? Such dramatic tension. So many interesting unanswered questions.:)

One more thing...I wonder why they decided to go back to TOS characters and situations for the new movie? Could it be because TOS characters are more interesting and provide more "juice" for reinvigorating the franchise? I think so. I certainly wouldn't watch another movie with that wooden Frenchman with the English accent.

    TOS is Such Good Television.

I enjoyed every one of the series. I enjoy TNG the most probably just becase of the special effects (I'm a big fan of good effects). But that doesn't make the original worse. They are all different shows, so you should look at them that way. If I'm in the mood for a classic, I'll watch TOS. If I need a little more "action" I'll watch TNG. They are all in the Star Trek theme, and that's what I like about them. (I liked the way Enterprise came up with a way to explain why Klingons look like regular folks in TOS, but have ridges later on). But I do agree that nothing will have the longevity of TOS or the crew. (Damn it Jim, it's just a show!).

That said, I will not miss this movie. It looks pretty cool (but does look like it may make some mistakes. Wasn't spock like 50 yrs old when kirk joined starfleet?) I went openning night for 2 thru 7, so may be it's time to re-start that tradition.

So you're a TNG guy, that's fine. But that spin-off could not live up to the caliber of TOS, nor could any of the characters.

And DarqueKnight, very well stated, I could not agree more with your responses.

I dunno, after Kirk retired and went to work for Priceline its been a bit downhill for me, although if the two hottie Polk Chicks want to come hang out with the old guy in the Reel Time Theater to watch the show that would be cool, beware though I do get worn out rather quickly during exciting scenes these days, but I suppose like the song I am as good once as I ever was, well at least half as-good, which ain't bad.

Star Trek is pretty cool, well, at least better than Hannah Montana and Sponge BoB.

The trailer looks good, BUT if they don't fix that product placement mentioned in the review, they're gonna catch hell from the geeks.

DK, nice description about WHY TOS is better. The only reason younger people don't appreciate TOS sfx, is because they look cheesy. It was the 60's for gawds sake.
If CGI had been available, they WOULD have used it!

Plain and simple, TOS was WAY ahead of it's time. This show was on during the height of the Cold War, and the civil rights movement in this country.
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

Im am as excited about this movie as I was for Dark Knight and possibly Episode III!

Each trailer looks better and better and this one was no different. I like the people they got to play Spock and Kirk - they actually resemble who theyre supposed to resemble.

Im a huge fan of the original Star Trek and Next Generation. After that tho they just got watered down.

They did bring on a great cast line-up and it looks like J.J. is trying to bring back what the OS was, not the passive PC Next Gen crap.

Definitely! Ive always preferred Kirk over Picard.

I did love TNG but it always got on my nerves that no matter how big a rotten SOB's the enemy was being Picard always wanted to sit down and talk, and feel, and share.

I loved Kirk's reaction when somebody messed with him - he'd just kill them! I remember General Order 24. While he was being held prisoner on some hair ball planet, he got in contact with Scotty and gave him General Order 24 which was basically if he wasnt released within 24 hours, the Enterprise would destroy the planet! Now thats hostage negotiations!!! :D
