Any good thoughts about Cloverfield? A friend wants to go see it, so I very well may end up seeing it in theaters, but I have no idea what the deal with it is.

Look good? Entertaining? Decent? Bad? Horrific?

The one complaint I've seen here and elsewhere before the movie even comes out is the whole shaky camera thing, so if that's a turn-off for you you may want to avoid it.

I love JJ Abrams so I want to see this soon. And considering there will be lots of "surprises" in the movie I want to see it ASAP so none of them get spoiled - I HATE spoilers.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Shaky camera really doesn't bother me at all unless it's really excessive. Like, in I Am Legend, I didn't even notice it until Mac ranted on and on about it. :p

Awesome, I'm excited to see this now! Thanks for the info.

There's a blogger for USA Today who saw an early screening.
Yes, it is true: I have seen Cloverfield. I've looked into the face of the monster! I'm not supposed to post a review until Friday, but I will offer two tips for enjoying the movie:

    1. Go in with no expectations. Try to forget about the hype and just take pleasure in the film, which is 90 minutes of frightful fun. If you've been ignoring the online "clues" and whatnot, you might even be at an advantage.

    2. Do not sit in the front row. Reviews will probably compare this to The Blair Witch Project, partly because of the handheld camera work. On Monday we may hear from moviegoers who couldn't handle the shakiness. I'm not sure how I could've prepared for it, but I'm warning you: It's pretty severe.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Hmmm, interesting. Doesn't really seem to bode well. :(

But, hey...I HAVE been ignoring the clues and usually don't have any expectations...so maybe I'm still in good shape! :D

The NYT certainly wasn't too impressed.
Smart as Tater Tots and just as differentiated, Rob and his ragtag crew behave like people who have never watched a monster movie or the genre-savvy “Scream” flicks or even an episode of “Lost” (Hello, Mr. Abrams!), much less experienced the real horrors of Sept. 11.

TOO MUCH SHAKY CAM! My freind and I both got a headache. AWESOME bass though -- would prefer to watch this on blu-ray or DVD. Great monster movie though. (for the record, this is the first movie to ever give me a headache).

I just saw it tonight as well and it's not bad. I would definitly get this on DVD as a blind purchase.

The beginning is a little slow but when the shite hits the fan, JJ keeps the tension pretty steady all the way into the end. This was the first movie I've seen in a long time, at an actual theater and I think the most telling sign that it was intense was it was very quiet....no DAMN!!!! NO NO NO NO DON'T DO IT! Watch out DOG!....perfect viewing experience....all movie. Keep in mind it's PG13 and that's borderline amazing.

The Iron Man trailer was a little soft but I'm digging RDJ as Tony Stark. 10K BC looks pretty cool as well.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I loved Cloverfield. Talk about one hell of a ride; an hour and a half of pure madness once the slow, but short, beginning takes place. I loved the originality of it and the script was pure goodness (not too involved, not too serious, but you could see it as plausibly being genuine as well).

If you can stand the shakiness, which is necessary for the believability of the film, you NEED to see it on the big screen. Fantastic job.

Just got back from seeing. I have to say I'm VERY pleased with it! I also have to say it was very different in several unexpected and unusual respects, but I think they all contribute to making it a unique movie that keeps you guessing the whole time.

For about the first 15 minutes I was thinking, "Oh gosh...this shaky cam thing is making me CRAZY!!!!" Then I never even thought about it again until after the movie when I realized, "Hey, that wasn't too bad!" Like Refefer said, the shaky cam actually REALLY adds to the movie, makes it seem real, and I adjusted to it fairly quickly, even though I was really not digging it at first.

The 'monster' was awesome, too. They didn't over-expose it in the beginning, kept you waiting, and then when you got to see it, it certainly wasn't a let-down. Not overdone and totally unrealistic, but also not so low-key that anyone could complain about it as some have about the 'dark-seekers' in I Am Legend.

I was just really pleased with the whole thing. The way it's shot, the way the story starts, the limited view (both with visuals and the pieces of the puzzle) you get from the first-person type vantage point as the story unfolds, and the end are all very unique, at least in my movie-going experience. And I thought that though some of those approaches aren't always the best, combined together in this movie they really came together and made it an awesome movie.

Oh, and I was really surprised how it all ended.

    Save your money.

A big pile of over-hyped crap that was a total waste of my time. Did a double date to see this tonight, and both my wife and the other girl left the theater because it was making them sick. We were seated in the second to last row of the theater, dead center, it didn't help.

While the creature was impressive (What little you actually saw for 4 second shots) the entire way it was filmed was flat out annoying. Not enjoyable, (A feeling that was voiced as the entire theater boo'ed at the lame ending) not worth my time, and all around a head-ache giver at best!

Seriously, if they were to do, "Cloverfield vs Godzilla" that would be freakin' sweet! But not this pathetic poor excuse for film-making handheld crap. It was really un-watchable at times, as I had to look away to keep from getting dizzy.

Also, the plot was very unrealistic at times... a girl with a spike thru her left chest and then pulled off of it by three teens and 2 mins later she's running?! Right. Surviving a helicopter crash landing, and running away without it blowing up?! Double Check.

It could have been amazing, yes. It wasn't. Will it have people talking for a long time? Probably, so it may be successful in that regards. Will I ever recommend it or watch it again? Not likely.
