She's in school for her PhD. We used to split things 50/50. I don't want her taking out any loans so I pay for everything and she uses her savings to pay for school.

I bought a set of Carver ALS Platinums and restored them. The wife absolutely hated them. "They're too big and ugly" was her comment. So I built her a Koy pond she had been wanting which ended up costing the same or more than the speakers by the time it was complete. Now she thinks they look OK and doesn't mind them dominating the room. About 3 months later I got a killer deal on a pair of AL-III's. She said "those have got to go. You've got too much audio junk. You're gonna have to sell those." Well, she loves TV, so I hooked them up to the video system and after watching a few of her favorite movies with the speakers cranked, she decided she liked them after all and I could keep them. You just have to find the right angle to approach the issue if you care about keeping harmony in the household.

Turns out she's been talking to my audio buddies about what I've been looking at. She wanted me to wait so that I wouldn't buy something she planned to get me for Christmas. Which by the way is in January for me because Christmas is not a time for presents, but New Years is. Anyway I digress, it's official. I am an ****. She's been fighting me tooth and nail because she wanted to surprise me with some new gear. F. She even called Klaus from Odyssey as she knew I've been talking to him. Haha. See guys, I told you she was great.

Glad things seem to have worked themselves out for you. Now, make sure to get her something nice for the holidays in return.

Trust me that's her plan! When the holidays roll around, the inverse of the 1/5 rule goes into effect. So she buys me a $1000 amp. Suddenly, I have to get her a fur coat! Haha j/k.

    . . . But she's not.

Am I completely off-base here by believing I should be able to buy whatever I want when it is my money in an apartment that I pay for?

No, not at all. This is one thing Mrs. PolkThug and I have done right. She doesn't ask me for permission to buy stuff and I don't ask her. Only requirement is that bills are paid first.

I am ring shopping, but only as practice and for the education. Her parents are Indian . . . . and they love me, which was no small feat. However, once you're in you're in for life! Now they can't get enough of me. It's great.

I am shooting for marriage my third year of law school. 2 years from now. She and I both agree this is a smart move financially . . . and it just feels right.

I am glad you guys worked it out, your compassion should be commended. It is very easy to become frustrated when we have this kind of a passion.

After marriage, you guys need to breed some audio loving children before it's too late. (here I am preaching what I don't plan to practice, heh... anyone see 'Idiocracy'?) I love it how the educated plan their lives so accordingly. It is almost ironic that we may be the eventual death of our own desires.

Maybe no time for kiddies, but definitely time for music, eh?

My wife doesn't understand half of what I obsess about, but she is remarkably apt at predicting whether we should to hang onto the reciept or not.

First of all, those are fugly speakers.

Second of all, wtf are you guys thinking/drinking or smoking?

If it's "your" money. Do what the f*ck you want with it. Why are you asking us? However, if you want to proceed with the 'this is mine' line of reasoning.....just don't whine to me when you are all alone chaffing the bishop to Jenna Jameson and your woman is giving up the guts to some other putz.

Sure, it's cool to BS with your buds about women this and women that....however, the underlying issue in MOST cases is that your signifigant other feels that they are second (or lower) to your material wants. 99 times out of 100, all they want to know is that the DO come first, that you do consider them in the process. They don't, generally, want to feel like lepers who are dependent and should (by extension) be grateful for the roof that you put over thier head and the crumbs that you allow them to have. They want to feel like they are equal partners in the relationship.

However, whatever works for you but, like I said, people in general and women, specifically, will only take being treated like second class citizens for so long....

I suspect (and hope) the above slew of responses is nothing more than an attempt to live vicariously. If not, than welcome to the newest audio/singles club on the WWW.

I hope so, Sean. I really do.

    Thanks Cathy...but that's just common sense/courtesy 101.

Yeah well judging from most of the responses on this board when this kind of subject comes up, 90% of the men on this club don't have any!

Troy, leave it to you to overreact.

You doth protesteth too much... the more you post the more obvious it gets that you are covering up some serious male insecurity issues.

They are... we have a passion for audio. Sometimes our significant others don't understand it, but the true test is when they tollarate it. It is nothing to be ashamed of, to have a passion for something, and we would all be fools to expect everyone to understand.

It only seems that Troy likes to derail threads into a big defense of something... this wasn't a thread bashing women, but suddenly Troy to the rescue of something that doesn't need to be rescued.

Like I said... I think the OP handled this gracefully. Two edcuated people living together can sometimes bring a bit of strife, but the true test is in how it works itself out. Everything has worked out for the best, or even better, than any of us could have predicted. No need for his parade to be rained apon by the TroyD overreactivity squad.
You're just trying to start something.

Heh, the day I do something like that would be my last day on the forum... and I am not planning on leaving anytime soon.

    Whatever you say, man.

However, I'm going to repeat again for about the twentieth time, ignore me. Please. Do not respond to my posts. I have zero issues going scorched earth. Your best bet is to just leave me alone and everyone gets along.

There are many guys on this forum who know me well, been to my home, know my wife....I'll leave it for them to decide if I'm full of ****.

    Have a nice day.
