Two Questions . . . One speaker related . . . one femine related:)

1. These look bad ****! I want a pair so bad. If I had the money I would buy them right now.

strip1.jpg

2. Let's pretend I have the money. My girlfriend won't let me buy them because she doesn't like the way the look! Are you effing kidding me!

How can she like my Adagios and not these? I'm about to go raise some hell. Ok here's a third question. Am I completely off-base here by believing I should be able to buy whatever I want when it is my money in an apartment that I pay for?

Her payment for my housing would be:

1. Service of my emotional and physical needs.
2. Cooking.
3. Making my doctor appointments.

Things I do which I feel cancel these out in addition to putting a roof over her head.

1. Take both her dogs out several times everyday to ****.
2. Clean the apartment as "no one can clean like I can."
3. I pay the bills and take care of anything with a contract.

Please don't misundwerstand me, I am painting a poor picture of this girl. She'd take a bat to someone's head for me and still have dinner on the table when I get home. She's loving. She's sweet. And she's going to make me die happy. But, come on.

All I ask for is one room in the house, my man lair. I believe I shuld get to do whatever I want in it! . . . . barring adultery . . . :)

You'll need her buy-in. Without it, you'll catch more hell.

If you really want a woman that says "yes" to your every whim, then replace her. Otherwise, get used to it.

I did this all the time! But, with the amount of gear I buy, this gets expensive! Say I buy a $1,500 pair of speakers . . . In order to maximize her happiness and acceptance while at the same time balancing my budget, I have to spend atleast $300. It's the law of 1/5s.

Solid, I can totally relate to everything you just said. I am in the same boat. . . I pay for everything regarding our apt, bills, groceries, linens, furnishings, and ask for very little in return. I do more than my share of the day to day (laundry, cleaning, etc) even though I work a full-time job. Hell, I've even drastically lightened up my drinking and recreational smoking for the betterment of our relationship, as well as cutting back on red meat.

So, I feel I and/or we have a right to put our foot down about certain things. I have only a few things that are put my foot down worthy:
    - watching football all day on Sunday should I choose to
    - play basketball whenever I like for as long as I choose
    - play golf whenever I like as long as it's early in the morning as to not 'ruin' the whole day
    - collect as much audio gear as I like even if it's piled to the roof

So, as long as you bend over backwards on enough other stuff, you should be able to get those damned speakers without any guilt.

Can I quote you on that? :D

Look, your money is your money and if she can not respect the fact that you have a hobby that takes you places that the interior design / looks aspect does not agree with, then........;)

I live with and am married to an interior designer and while she may not like the look of all of the things I bring in, she respects the fact that this is MY hobby. When she asks to listen to some of her songs, the WAF is not there at all because she reaps the sonic benefits of my hobby and all is well in the house of treitz3.

My advice.....don't get your panties in a wad about this and make it into a "the cap is off the toothpaste" thing or you both will be doomed, or at least your life will be miserable in dealing with the lovely lady or you will eventually lose the passion you have for the hobby due to the amount of grief it presents you. Try to convince her that while it may be not what she wants, it is what you desire to bring you to the next level......and that your tastes my change so they may not be in place for long.

After that, refer to the quote above......ask for forgiveness because you like them too much to get rid of them ;). Then again, what you told her to begin with may come true and then you have nothing to worry about.

One more thing, please ALWAYS keep in mind that if mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

Approach this with tact, poise and class and you should be fine for the rest of your life, at least on this front.......

Those things are gorgeous especially on the stands.

I would take her gently in your arms put your face and lips an inch from hers and say, "my love I love you very, very much." Then kiss her gently release her and then go over to the PC and order them!

Maybe find some dusty, beaten up SDAs on CL somewhere. Tell her you just found the deal of the century on some awesome, classic Polk speakers that are worth THOUSANDS!!! Act all excited and tell her you're planning to check them out and hopefully buy them this weekend.

She'll probably sit down at the computer and order those cute bookies for you after seeing how bad the habit could be.

I've heard the M&K's at Stephen Monte's store, Quest for Sound. They sounded awesome, great bass extension, very musical presentation all around. The only downside was that they were in the same room as my AAD 2001 monitors. Well, needless to say the M&K speakers will not be replacing the AAD's. Not even close. Well worth a listen if you can find a local dealer.

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

edit: There's no way in hell you could read that review, that quickly. hah. As for how the two compare. Its simple - they are both cut from the same cloth and will have identical character. The difference is; the Topaz will have greater efficiency at the expense of bass output and extension. The Ruby will hit slightly lower, and notably harder... but it will take a he-man of an amp to bring it out. No, the Khartago won't have the cajones to get the job done (the Strato's Extremes will just barely pass the test).

Haha, not surprised to read that, I skimmed it, but you'd be surprised how fast you can teach yourself to read and understand. I was actually reading any typing at the same time.

    No... You are not.

Buy the speakers, and unless she is truly shallow, it isn't going to ruin the relationship. There is nothing wrong with the classic "breadwinner/homemaker" arrangement. I happen to prefer this, but it doesn't work for everyone, obviously. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have clearly defined roles.

I can't believe all the trouble most guys have with their better halves when it comes to purchases with your own money.

Not something I have ever had to deal with. She buys what she wants, I buy what I want, all the bills are paid, neither of us carry any CC debt. What's the big deal?

I agree. My credit is perfect. She just doesn't understand why I need to try other speakers or upgrade when "it already sounds find' to her. "Why don't we use that money to go somewhere together instead." Which we have done . . . but, I see audio as an investment. Going to India or China or Europe is an investment. Women buy "gear' too - shoes, purses, coats, etc. when they don't need new ones and the old ones look fine. So whats the difference between the two? Nothing IMO. Shoes, purses, etc. can be expensive depending on the designer and based on numbers alone the ladies usually have us beat in terms of who has the most "gear".

Buy them, don't feel guilty. Her reaction may give you a little glimpse of what the future could be like.

I'm curious, why doesn't she help out with any of the housing costs? Does she work?
