sometimes in a man's life, when he has lived a relativly conservative life, he makes a decision that can seem, well, impulsive.
I currently drive a Volvo S40. I love the car and how it handles, but the seat squeaks in the turns, and apparently I can only play half of my cd collection, and never the 1st or second track. This, and a couple other electrical glitches have dulled the experience of Volvo ownership a bit.
couple this with the fact that I only have 14000 miles on it (I bought it in 9/05), adn you'd be surprised that they charge me quite a bit for insurance, basically because its considerred a performance oriented car.
so, in short, I have a 4 dr sedan that I treat like a sports car, in terms of driving it more for pleasure than function, I have my 1991 GMC pick up truck that I drive more often (88000 miles, and steadfastly refuses to show any signs of death, so I plan on driving it until it dissolves)
I come to the realization, if I am going to have a "fun" car, why not get something a little less practical, but more badass. Enter, the Mustang GT.
I have a piece of rental property I am selling (should be closing in a couple weeks) so it certainly wont stretch the budget, I also have good equity in the Volvo.
Bonus: my wife is SO on board with the plan. She thinks I should just buy it tomorrow and stop thinking about it so much.
I'm thinking "Grabber Orange" for the color, with the black racing stripes.
here's an example pic http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonmchapman/553607826/in/photostream/mple pic
I plan on test driving it more, but I always loved a v8 and rear drive. Solid rear axle? sure, but so does my truck, and I LOVE driving the truck.

<drool> Beautiful car.
Why not go for broke and get the convertible? If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
This, and a couple other electrical glitches have dulled the experience of Volvo ownership a bit.
They are infamous for electrical problems.

someone told me this.....about 3 months after I bought the car  . luckily I got it REAL cheap, I couldnt pass it up. Its why my equity position is still pretty good.Living Room 2 Channel -

You do realize that Volvo and Ford are the same company. If you like the Stang, go for it, but do not do it expecting a more reliable, trouble-free vehicle, since the Volvo is actually a higher end car than the Stang, and should be better built, or so the thought goes...
I have heard to avoid the Mustang convertible as they have been known to have leaking problems. Check out www.blueovalforums.com to get any inside info you need on the Mustang.

If wifey is on board I woulda had it yesterday

I have had 3 mustang GT's and , aside from squeaks, were pretty solid cars.

Manual Trans.........check my Volvo is a manual, so safe to say the Stang will be too.
from what I hear, the Mustang is pretty trouble free and reliable, I believe it got a recommend buy from consumer reports because of the reliability. The drivetrain is supposed to be pretty solid. I'm sure overall fit and finish will be below the Volvo, but I can live with an occasional squeak and rattle, as long as she starts and runs solid.
I had to have the Volvo towed out of my driveway once, not fun.
oh, and I tend to avoid convertibles, I like the hardtops, stiffer chassis usually = better handling and performanceLiving Room 2 Channel -

For the most part the Mustang is pretty solid and reliable. They have been building them a long time and tend get it right. Hi tech..look elsewhere, but it is way up on the "bang for the buck" scale."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I've driven both the 98 GT and the 06 GT. Totally different cars. The 06 is so much fun to drive. It has an obscene amount of power.
When I first drove it, I turned onto a 35 mph road, accelerated to my usual 5 above the limit, looked down, and realized I was really going just over 55. It gets fast quick.
Anyways, I'm on board with you getting the GT as well.
I would love nothing more than to get the new Shelby Mustang. -

thats what god invented engine mods for
actually, I would get lower profile and wider 18" tires for better handling (size reccomended by steeda, cant remember it off the top of my head. then lower it 3/4" via lower springs, and maybe better brakes after the car is broken in.
most I would do to the engine is the obligatory cold air intake upgrade and an axle back exhaust. both together would give at least 20 horses, which is more than I will need most likely.Living Room 2 Channel -

Just buy the Salleen Parnelli-Jones edition Mustang. Same paint job, WITH a number already on the side (for when you take it to the track ), and I've read a LOT of good things about its performance.
Go for it!
HERE are some pics of it.
MORE info.
You should get it.

Hell even the new '08 C6 is a giant killer. $45k car that runs 0-60 in 4 flat and the 1/4 mile in 12.4 that can be had with an optional leather wrapped and embroidered dash is tough to beat.HT

gt500 and Parnelli Jones Saleen? cmon guys, I aint got over 50g in the budget . the GT500's are still fetching 20 large over sticker price (at least 65 g's) Silly in my eyes.Living Room 2 Channel -

Ignore the naysayers... the Mustang is a solid and well built reliable car.
http://media.ford.com/newsroom/feature_display.cfm?release=25827Taking after such steeds as Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, Ford's iconic pony car came out on top in three major consumer surveys sponsored by J.D. Power & Associates. All three surveys -- the Initial Quality Study (IQS), the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study and the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) -- chose Ford Mustang as the leader in its mid-size Sporty Car segment. In early June, the Mustang galloped to an initial quality model segment award in the IQS report, which measures problems per 100 vehicles as reported by customers after three months. The Mustang joined the Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ, Lincoln Mark LT and the Mazda MX-5 Miata in sweeping their segments for top honors in the IQS, making Ford the only company with five initial quality winners this year.
In late June, Mustang backed that up with a top ranking in the APEAL study, in which customers rated their delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their vehicles after three months of driving.
And late last week, the Mustang earned the top ranking in its class in the VDS report, which measures the quality of three-year-old vehicles as reported by customers. -
^^Key Words: "INITIAL Quality"
Long term is a whole new story.HT
