Tom, tube amps tend to consume more power at idle, gotta keep the tubes happy.
Interestingly, the Bel Canto's and the VTL's go for about the same money used.Political Correctness'.........defined

For the record, any amplifier (tube or solid state) with outputs operating in Class A will basically consume full power all the time, including at zero signal. That's the way Class A works.
Tube amps will always draw more juice than a similar solid state amp if for no other reason than the combined current draw of all the tubes' heaters (filaments). In most tube amps, at least some stages will be operating in Class A (i.e., biased "on" all the time) and will be dissipating some power even at idle.
Don't tell the Green Police! -
Don't tell them that you have to leave them on for a while for them to sound their best either.
My amp isn't class A, but it still sounds best when I leave it on all the time. I think everything is pretty much left on all the time... except my CRT monitors. -

All my gear in my rig stays powered up 100% of the time unless a thunderstorm is brewing.
Edit: That is not entirely true. I power the Oppo up when I am going to use it as well as the turntable power line conditioner. -
Oh, I know about the keeping it on, I practice the same thing and I don't run tubes. I just never would have imagined 200 watts being used at idle. Well, goes to show, you learn something everyday.
Tubes have not been part of my audio journey yet. First stop will be Jolida CDP on the front end.
OK, back to integrated amps.......~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -

Careful; I've found that my Spectral SS preamp DOES NOT like tube CDPs. I've had two in and both were very, very bright and had that rich fake sound. I'm not saying that you will have the same problem but make sure whatever player you buy has at least a 30 day MBG on it. -
I bought my first piece of tube gear recently. I have not recieved it yet in the mail, but I am very excited... it could arrive at any time now.
I bought a Yaqin (now called GrantFidelity) Tube Buffer.
It uses one tube per channel, so two tubes, a tubed output stage that I can attach to anything I want. I am going to put it between my pre out and main in on my integrated amp (hehe see topical tie in).
The tubes aren't the more common types, but replacements can be found, so I may just leave that thing on all the time like everything else. I know that if I do not, the hours of warmup would get annoying each time I want to listen. The tubes are probably not run at full heat (no gain), so they will probably last many years anyway.
