    Its technically a grand...

The kit (passive) is 719 shipped... (w/ megawoofers) ---

So you figure 3-5 hundred for a plate amp...

Im using a pro amp and a seperate crossover... and even with that it is about 500 less than dual Ultras...

Great sub though. Very fast. Excellent midbass qualities too that I find SVS lacks considerably.

Please note I am not dissing SVS, they are EXCELLENT subs ---- but you cant change the fact that their primary target is HT. While they do good for music, they are not the fastest or most detailed I've found. It was far more apparent as I switched to better gear...

Just wondering what the total output was for VMPS Vs. SVS Ultra was? Is the VMPS able to compete with the SVS in total output (db's)? I went to the website for VMPS to check out your sub, as Ive never heard of it before, and it looked like to me it used just a plain paper cone.? Not necissarily the most beautiful thing. Not that really matters to me. Im interested in hearing a little more about this sub, as well as, the company.. If I am not mistaken, in a thread somewhere, someone stated that they make loudspeakers as well? Any comments on those?

    Thanks,

    Josh

    TN --

VMPS makes some of the best subs on the planet, especially for music, and especially for the price. Just ask a few folks on this forum who have owned them -- Hoosier, Russman, I think, and, of course, Sid. I don't own one YET, but someday I will.

Read more about what consumers have to say here:

You're absolutely right. That's why I got rid of mine.

I recall making a similar statement about SVS a couple of years ago and a few fellas on this forum were ready to beat me with a stick. The "better gear" comment is also important. I've said that, too, and some folks called me an "audio snob." Sorry, but good gear tells no lies...

Maybe SVS' newer drivers and subs do a better job with music -- I dunno.

Better gear makes a whole world of a difference; unfortunately better gear comes at higher prices....but fortunately the used market is there for us.
Then there's one more unfortunate thing....to be able to really hear the difference of better gear, you need better speakers; one more hit on the wallet.

Cables and wires and power cords don't make a difference though   :p

    FWIW...

The VMPS uses a Poly Cone on the 15" Megawoofer and a Carbon Fiber cone on the 12" Megawoofer. I don't buy paper cone subwoofers anymore. Way to much waffle - the PR is paper though.

Output, hard to compare - I'm not running enough power to reach the subs full potential - but its enough for my room. Later on I will add another XTi1000.

    Thanks for the comments.

And yes, better gear makes lesser components sound...lesser! ;)

A very important thing to note is the SVS is a high mass design and the VMPS is low mass.

The SVS moves ALOT, ALOT at higher volumes. The VMPS moves half of what a SVS does at the same volume. To me this is a good thing... hehe

Wow. I always thought he had a Klipsch setup with an SVS sub, with Adcom and Outlaw gear.

How much are the Grande Utopias? Can't find the msrp on the website.

No, he has Outlaw pre, Pass Labs mono blocks (massive, 125 pounds a piece), SVS Ultra, Grande Utopias and a JM center.

MSRP on the Labs are around 90-100,000.

Isn't buying the JMLabs like getting a Ferrari? Nowhere to go when you're at the top...

Anyways, I think you are very lucky to have someone close to you who is into audio.

    One thing I have learned...

Audio Enthusiast could own the worlds most expensive, best speaker on earth --- but that does not mean the journey is over.

I already want a pair of Strata Minis and the Super Towers by Tyler. My adventure is FAR from over! :)

    I can agree.

I still think you are very lucky to have a dad who is into audio. I am not as lucky as you in that regard, I don't have access to $100,000 speakers and such.

So is it your dad that led you on this journey?

Kind of, this forum was 99% of the fuel.

I am in it for the journey. My Dad is in it for status. Far different avenues and reasons.

I don't discuss prices, it does not truly matter to me. If someone cares to ask - sure.

My Dad is very open about the fact he owns speakers that own 100,000.

I wouldnt pay no more than 8,000 for those Grande Utopias. To me, they are good - but not that good. To me, in my small room - the Taylos hang in there with them...

I hear ya on the prices thing.

You can get a speaker that costs 10x as much as another speaker, yet it might not sound better (or even worse). Price doesn't ALWAYS relate to performance in the audio world.

Still, at least you have a dad that is into audio. Mine would be happy with a 13" TV and a clock radio. I feel that having someone close to you who has a similar hobby really helps the relationship between you two...

I havnt spoke to my Dad truly in 2-3 years. We are talking a lil more now, but - haha, maybe twice a month.

Different story for a different thread though.

Back to Tyler Acoutics, VMPS, Odyssey, and the works!

Do whatever you can to build the relationship with pops, even if he's a jerk sometimes. In many instances, you may have to be the bigger man. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

    OK, back to audio --

I am simply amazed at the big hairy balls you got for buying two VMPS subs for such a small room. Are you trying to make NC quake? I realize you're doing the stereo sub thing, but damn...! Have you considered setting your system up in the living room?

Nah, my bedroom is just fine :)

Im taking it another step too..

Im going to run not one, but TWO Crown XTi1000's - bridged! :D

    I have LOST MY MIND!

Im still trying to get the thing integrated for music. Its so much faster and accurate than my SVS it isnt even funny. Thing does not add one bit of anything. Its so true, its almost to quiet for alot of my music. Where as the SVS was so loud for everything!

You gotta have a mind to lose one.:p

Two Crown amps bridged? That's re-dick-a-lus!

For the same money, why not buy a decent two-channel amp? I wouldn't think the VMPS subs required a bunch of power to get them to bust a move...

I can get Crown amps at cost. So I can get them very inexpensively.. :)

I think its my B&K's fault - I had this problem with my SVS, I ran the SVS on MAX volume in my small room.

This B&K is great for what it is man, but it is so outclassed right now. I could light it on fire in my driveway and be happier with it. It is just...not up to par in anyway.

I dont need a Stratos Extreme either.... Im just not pulling any stops.
