I'll concede that the air of the Cold War may have added to the inherent tension of a missile being stolen, but the same could be said for terrorism in modern society. I would say people are as afraid of terrorists now as they were of the threat of war in the 50s and 60s, no?

    I agree wholeheartedly...

which brings me to my original assertion. If you were going to explain Bond's origins as well as work within the boundaries of a realistic timeline, a "Cold War" theme would seem more appropriate. Maybe not within the confines of today's political climate, but then again attempting to simultaneously depict Bond in both the modern era along with the era in which he emerged was inherently contradictory --- if the filmmakers were attempting a relevant agenda.

Quick question that my wife just asked that has me thinking...

was the man in the white hat at the end of the movie (with the broken shades) le Chiffre? Vesper recognized him by the docks, but is it possible this guy was just one of her blackmailers? At the time, I didn't think it was him... but now she has me thinking back.

I've been trying to figure out who that was too. It's supposed to have ties to the next film, but I haven't researched enough to discover what character it was.

But it wasn't le Chiffre? My wife pointed to the whole bleeding eye -- broken glasses connection.

I believe that would be Adolph Gettler, a henchman for Mr. White.

Not a fan of the new Bond(the actor, not the movie).

    I liked the movie alot.

Jason Statham could have played James Bond 10x better than that aussie.

You don't see the transporter role similiar to a bond role?

Ehhh, I can see how you'd think they're similar, but there's some intangibles you need from your Bond that Statham doesn't have. Mostly I think he's too "jacked" to really fit the more subtle Bond role. Statham in Transporter was soft-spoken and polite and all that, but can you picture him in a tux trying to fit in at some formal event? He sticks out like a sore thumb. The guy looks like a bouncer.

I see your point, however I think that the movie companies would be able to tone him down a bit to fit the role. I just think his crafty things he did in the transporters would let him fit right into the Bond role. He has the ability to be stealthy when needed, yet create a **** storm in 0.003 seconds killing everyone in sight.

Not to mention, with the fancy cars he chooses in his Transporter 1 and 2, the BMW and the Audi, and Astin Martin DBS would fit him perfect:p

Back to the guy with the blacked out eyeglass(es), I think he was just a bagman for the organization. . . known as spectre. If you think about it, having a patch on the eye is the epitome of a high-ranking spectre agent, like Emilio Largo from Thunderball, whom No. 2 in Austin Powers was taken from.

    Spoiler:

It was definitely not Le "Hanker" Chiffe. . . he was shot in the head, remember. But, contrary to what they said, the money did matter. . . they just couldn't say "we've already got a lead on the money from the girl" because that would've given away the next 45 minutes of the film. . . which, did drag on a bit (only complaint, and it wasn't that bad of a dragging).

As a rule of thumb, I don't think a double or triple cross should be presented after the climax of a film, unless it's an unresolved cliffhanger to get you back for the next movie.

Only thing I didn't understand was why he didn't get the final text message "Mr White, 583-****-XXXX" until well after she was dead and bloated (STP, 1992). Slow international connection? I know she meant to leave it, but why didn't he get it much earlier?!? Also, did she simply text herself? If that's the case, wouldn't bond know to go to the sent file when he first found the phone to get that info? Was it supposedly sent by someone other than the girl to the girl's phone? Crap, now I have to go see it again to resolve these questions.

I saw Casino Royale last night with the girlfriend and while I think the movie is slightly above average [7/10] I don't care much for the new Bond. Bond is supposed to be suave, debonair and handsome..Daniel Craig is none of that! Bond is also supposed to be a mans man, all Craig is, is a well cut body with ears that look like a taxi cab with both doors open!! After the film I asked the girlfriend what she thought of Craig and she said he has a great body for a homely guy! LOL The flick is definitely worth seeing but the new Bond is a dud!

If you look at how Bond was supposed to look and who he was pictured after, I think Craig is the closest since Connery to resemble Bond.

I went to see it this afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the sequel ("Bond 22") due out in 2008. This is from imdb.com regarding Bond 22:

"In an interview with Jonathan Ross, Casino Royale (2006) director Martin Campbell hinted that Bond 22 would be a sort of follow on to Casino Royale, stating that it would be part 2 of a 2-part story and thus expecting there to be a small a gap as possible between the release of the 2 films.

Really lets get serious lol. Statham has none has very few if any of the tools to pull of that role other than an english accent......and i do belive craig if your refering to him is a brit. I found the somewhat cleverly directed. I did seem long but enjoyable. might watch it a again just to critique it. Campbell did a a good job and was a smart choice to direct that script

ah he is a brit, for some reason i thought he was aussie.

How do you figure statham has little to no tools for a role like that? What is he missing?

I initally was skeptical regarding Craig's ability to realistically portray Bond. I think his reading of the character is the most realistic of all the actors who have played Bond, both from an acting and from a physical appearance standpoint. I initially thought the role should have been awarded to a taller, more attractive actor. On second thought, a covert government operative would be better served by an "average" or "plain" appearance rather than a commanding physical presence that attracts attention.

Well Mr. Nightly...I am with you on this one. It dragged for me too. I went in with high expectations which was a bad thing I guess because I left pretty disappointed. Craig looked good though. That was a plus... and there were some pretty cool moments but overall - 5 out of 10.

I was really skeptical at first I mean Ive seen all the Bond movies to date and was up set when Brosnan was not going to be in it. However I was thoroughly Impressed. It was true to the story he was new at this and a lil rough around the edges but he did a good job. For me this will be a blind buy when it comes out. I have

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, as well. As a clarifier, I'm not a big Bond fan, probably haven't even seen but parts of maybe 8 or so Bond movies, and don't know any of the Bonds outside of Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and now Daniel Craig.

I thought this was the best one I've seen yet. I personally thought there was more action; more physical action, that is. All the other Bond movies do rely on gadgets, which is awesome 'cause I love gadgets, but it's really nice to see some good ol' hand to hand fighting. I also though Daniel Craig was the best Bond I've seen yet. His look, his attitude, everything. I'm really looking forward to all his 007 appearances.
