So, just got back from the new Bond flick.
Anybody else see it? I found myself looking at my watch an awful lot during it. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't actually boring, but it just seemed to drag on forever. The guy who played Bond was a stud, no doubt. He will make a great Bond for many years to come. The girl smashing. But it didn't even feel like an action flick... Almost a drama.
And very anti-climatic, I felt.
Not too much SQ wise. Could have been great, but fell short into the good category for the amount of "Drag" time. Not too much skin for a Bond flick, but overall, very well directed.
I wish I could give this an "A" but I fear it must fall into the B to B+ category.
I wouldn't waste money on seeing it in theaters. Wait for the DVD. Just my .02 of course

Well, I haven't seen it, but a bunch of friends of mine have, and yours is the worst review I've heard of it. They thought it was fantastic. Almost enough to make me go to the theaters and see it...
.... almostIf you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
I loved it!!!!!!!!!I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I have heard nothing but good reviews as well, but at this point I'll just wait for it to hit DVD.

Believe me.... I went into this film with reservations of mountainous proportions. For some reason, Daniel Craig struck me as the second-coming of Timothy Dalton -- unkempt, unsuave, and unbelievable as Bond.
I couldn't have been more removed from the truth.

Well, maybe this would be one of the few bond films I might actually like...
See, I hate super hero movies, and I think bond films should be considered one. Always useless action and unbelievable stunts. I know, I know, I shouldn't expect bond films to be believable, but thats the exact reason why I don't like them...AVR: H/K AVR240

Great movie. The thing that I liked about it was that the "Bond" in this movie wasn't another Pierce Brosnan. He was much more based off of the Ian Flemming novels, looked a lot more comfortable not wearing a suit, and embodied the idea of a 007 more than any previous one (yes, even more than Sean Connery).
I also like the use of a no-name bond girl, who I should mention is gorgeous. I'm tired of the Denise Richards' and Halle Berry's of the world getting that role.
Top notch acting, great action scenes, enthralling story. I can't wait for the next one.Lovin that music year after year.

I liked this Bond, he was a little more cold-blooded and the movie overall was more realistic than previous Bond movies.

Very much better than all of the recent Bond attempts. . . really, everything since Dalton has been pretty crappy, with Goldeneye being the exception (extra points for re-erecting the franchise and spawning one of the greatest games of all time).
Daniel Craig was very good, more of a real bada$$ guy than some fiction "my shirt never gets dirty, I've never bled" kind of guys.
Grittier, more realistic, keeps to the tradition, no cheesy special effects of ridiculous gadgets (no point since Q is gone, RIP). . . good stuff.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Good point Andy... this was the first Bond without gadgets. You hardly notice their absence. Kind of adds a timeless quality to the flick, since most of the time Q's inventions become rather dated after only a decade.I never had it like this where I grew up. See that's all I've been hearing is how Incredible this Bond flick was. I went in with expectations to be blown away by the film. I simply wasn't. The entire movie after the casino game was SOOOOOO slow. And their lines when they were playing up the romantic interest with the girl were beyond cheesy. "If all that is left were your smile and little finger..." ... "You've never seen how well I can use my little finger." Common guys, you call that an "Exceedingly intelligent and well-done script." Not for me.
Like I said, the guy kicked ****. That chase scene in the opening part, I thought it was stolen from District B-13. Some of the way's they moved, and the shots had to come from there.
Obviously, I'm in the minority here, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Again, I'm gonna stick with a B+. I never grew up on Bond flicks, so maybe that is part of the reason I didn't think it was Tops.wingnut4772 wrote:I love Daniel Craig. He is quite yummy. The Bond romances have always melted better than cheddar.... I won't deny that. The plot itself was extremely well-done. Bond movies have always been about double-crosses, shadow games, and mistaken identity. Of late, the franchise has lost sight of this and depended mostly on the razzle-dazzle of special effects, new technology, etc. etc.
That is why it was refreshing for the movie to take a bold leap and abandon that crutch. It stood on its own merits, which for the most part were plot driven.
And yes.... I grew up on Bond and I can thank my father for that:DI never had it like this where I grew up. I will wait for it to come out on DVD before seeing it. However, it sounds like there might actually be a storyline around which we have a few action sequences!

i enjoyed it for the simple fact that is was different. I will say I was hoping for John Cleese to have another turn at playing "Q". But, it just doesn't fit the flow of this movie, the darkness of Bond . But I do think the movie was about ten minutes too long.
Still, it's the best one since "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" IMHO.Review Site_ (((AudioPursuit)))

He does have the best line ever. At the end of the opening scene he watches the girl run off, he looks directly into the camera and states, "This never happened to the other guy".Review Site_ (((AudioPursuit)))

Quite a bit of my opinion of a movie comes down to expectations. I was pumped about seeing this Bond (I would watch almost all of the TBS Bond marathons, I think I own about 12 of them as well).
Anyway, before I see the movie, my girlfriend's dad said it was painfully slow, Daniel Craig didn't have the right attitude and was more of just a "street Bond" (whatever the hell that means), etc.
So, going in with lowered expectations, I was in prime position to love this movie. It surpassed his poor reviews, and the minor shortcomings were much less than the upside of Casino Royal, especially over recent Bonds.
If you like Daniel Craig, Layer Cake is another good one and it was onsale for $4 somewhere this weekend. Either BB or Circuit City, I think. One thing I would have liked is the time, it would have been better IMO if it was still the cold war. -
Interesting point Sami.
This factor more than any other is what makes the Bond films dated. Especially if you want to start at the beginning again. At least with the cold war going on there was the chance of pitting Bond against real potential threats to world security. However, with the resolution of the cold war, all Bond is left to fight are egomaniacal crackpots bent on world domination. Needless to say that gets old after a while.Sami wrote:Maybe it was that he was a more realistic character with less toys and glamour. Best Bond, both the movie and the character/actor, at least for a few decades.

right-on! About the only way I feel it could have been better was if it occurred during a time such as the Cold War... If it was going to play to his origins, it should not have taken place in modern times.

I've just started wathcing all of the old Bond films in order. Just finished "Thunderball." And I hav eno idea what you guys are talking about with regards to the Cold War. Every plot line I've seen so far (four movies) has been completely reliant on a rogue millionnaire evil madman who acquires some weapon and plans to use it against the world, or something to that effect.
Sometimes there's a hint at the Cold War, but nothing really revolves around it or relies solely on it. Examples so far :
Dr. No - evil genius trying to disrupt an American missile launch, or something to that effect.
From Russia With Love has some relation to the Cold War, but the main enemy is a group (SPECTRE) who is an enemy of both the US AND Russia.
Goldfinger is about a gold heist, and is considered by many to be the best Bond movie ever made - absolutely no mention or relation to the Cold War, or any international conflicts at all, really.
Thunderball, a crazy guy steals two nuclear weapons to hold the world hostage for millions of dollars.
Maybe plots of later movies revolve around Cold War themes (I haven't gotten to them yet), but the idea that not having the Cold war backdrop somehow takes away from the newer movies is ludicrous and unfounded. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Bob -- do you realize how many times you referenced the threat of a missle launch?
If that ain't "Cold War", then spank my **** and call me Sally...:pI never had it like this where I grew up. So.... every missile launch since the invention of missiles was related to the fight against the spread of Communism? Huh, must have missed that one. If someone stole a nuclear warhead today, would you immediately think "Cold War"? Did the movie "Broken Arrow" remind you of Communists in any way?
I know some of you grew up during the Cold War, so maybe it's just more of a theme you see that I don't, being younger. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
I finished watching all 20, count em, Bond films a couple days before the release of Casino Royale. Needless to say, I'm a pretty big Bond fan.
Casino Royale was fantastic. Sure, there were slower parts, but what [good] Bond movie doesn't have them?
My goal is to have a new place, and my ideal home theater setup completed by the time it comes to DVD. And Nov 08 couldn't come quickly enough!! -
I know I turned 30 this month, but I'm not that old...
I just associated the threat of nuclear missles with the Cold War. Once the Cold War ended, people stopped worrying as much about being nuked... You know that.
