    In no order:

    1 - Pink Floyd
    2 - Led Zepplin
    3 - Rush
    4 - Dream Theater
    5 - The Police

If I had another couple choices, I'd also include Radiohead, but couldn't put them in place in one of the above

1)BEATLES-PERIOD Most talented, not necessarily "rockers" by definition
    2) ZEPPELIN or Floyd
    3) SRV-not a band, but if we are talking rocking blues...
    4)HENDRIX-same thing
    5) The Who-no one lists them? Radiohead or Metallica can't be better than The Who. Great bands, but better than The Who? I guess it is the chicken or the egg question....

AC/DC is up there. It depends on one's true definition of rock. Doors would be there as well. I guess I can't limit it to 5...How about the 5 greatest blues/rock guitar players of all time: 1) SRV 2)Clapton 3)Knoffler 4)Page 5)Robert Cray

I thought putting Radiohead number 2 would cause some outcry, but I think they belong. While The Who is certainly right there, I feel that Radiohead took the torch from bands such as this and ultimately surpassed them.

It's not even worth the effort. How anyone can put Radiohead even in the same league with some of these other bands boggles my mind. They're a decent band, don't get me wrong, but not even the best band to come out of that ERA, let alone of all time.

I don't really consider myself a fan of Radiohead (though I believe I have most of their albums on the shelf), but their influence on modern music cannot be denied. They've been critical darlings for well over a decade, and certainly lasted longer than 99% of the bands produced by that seminal paradigm shift from "pre-Smells Like Teen Spirit" to everything after. Leave 'em, lump 'em, or lick 'em, it's easy to see that something special is happening in their music. Kudos to Peter for not necessarily staying with the safe picks...
    not that anyone has.

    as for my list:
INPO (and probably more akin to my Top 5 favorite bands)

    The Flaming Lips
Beach Boys (not Kokomo gents, not Kokomo:) )
    The Cure
    The Talking Heads
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Having four "individuals" on a list is definitely taking advantage of the loose definition clause.

    Eagles

    Stones
    ACDC
Aerosmith (you gotta move DVD is awesome)
    SRV
    Black Crowes

Not a best list as others deserve to be on there instead of what I have but more of my favourites list.

Bests should include Zep, Eagles, The Who....but they would be more on my like list and not love list...just personal preferences.
edit: oops forgot about Hendrix..how can a list omit someone as awesome as that....but still not one of my favourites

Danger Boy, seeing that poll is what prompted me to start this thread. I think Oasis is a band similar to Radiohead (not to mention The Stone Roses, The Smiths, etc): huge UK following and much critical acclaim, but not nearly as well respected in the US (with the exception of some critics, like Pitchfork Media).

Pitchfork is more impressed with their writing than actually reviewing albums with any substance for the potential listener. I'd take what they say with a grain of salt. :)

this is really tough.. no doubt in any top 5 list.. you're going to have to cut out some really excellent bands somewhere.

for me.. and this was really tough..

    1. Beatles - c'mon.. how can they not be in everyones's list?

    2. Stones - good rockers and longevity has to account for something, right?

    3. Pink Floyd

    4. Led Zeppelin

    5. U2 - this was a tough one.. does U2 really qualify to be grouped with the other 4 supergroups? I thought so.

I have always hated U2. They're very popular I know but I am not sure why I hate them. Maybe not edgey, and dirty enough for me. Maybe to mainstream pop sounding. Not sure, they just annoy me.

I can't stand the Beatles. Overplayed tripe. They're a really damn good pioneering band, but their sound is utterly nauseating. They just seem like everyones choice by default, not because they have a reason.

Never cared much for the Beatles either. They were too pretty, pop sounding as well. With the exception of a few songs such as Helter Skelter and a couple more that I cannot think of right now.
