But it was more a factor of timing though.

    Mike

Just an opinion and not held by many. Lot's of talent there IMO and not just luck associated with timing. Maybe you had to "be there" in order to really appreciate the music. I was.

I think being signed to a major label has everything to do with luck and timing. It's even hard to do today despite the wide open resource that is the internet. They were a hell of a talented band, but I find that they've been more push than pull.

    The Beatles again!!!!!!!!!

Farve looked really old, is he in a rock band!!! Maybe the Stones could use him.

The Best would be Beatles for Bears.

I would never say they didn't have talent. I just didn't care for the majority of their sound is all. More personal preferences. There are lots of people that possess incredible talent that I don't care for the product. They just don't reach inside me and grab my soul. With the exception of Helter Skelter and a couple of others that I cannot think of right now either.

early Beatles were not that good actually.. not till after the stopped performing live did they really hone their skills.. listen to the lyrics, listen to the music.. for it's time.. it was groundbreaking..

I remember reading how the Beach BOys had just released Pet Sounds.. and they got a hold of Sgt. Pepper. and were totally blown away by it.

Think of the technology of the time... 4 track tape machines... having manually splice audio tape and then tape it back together... it was raw and very crude.. and what George Martin and the Beatles did was truely groundbreaking.

Good stuff everybody. Thanks for playing along.

Some surprises: First, nobody said Bob Dylan. Is this because of the word "band"? If so, it would also explain only one person giving Clapton and the King their due, and nobody even mentioning David Bowie or Neil Young.

Other notable ommissions: Velvet Underground, Grateful Dead, only one mention of The Talking Heads, no punk bands (Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash--maybe somebody said the Clash?).

And where does 'N Sync fit into this? Surely they are one of the greatest of all time. ;)

I note a lot of progressive rock on the list, Rush in particular.

    Any other comments?

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Calling Dylan a rocker is REALLY stretching it. I know we're using hte loose definition but still, not many consider Dylan "rock." Some of the others you mentioned lots of people LIKE, but top 5? I can't think of many people w ho would put someone like BOWIE in their top 5. Ditto for the Talking Heads or Velvet Underground (the latter of which is another dubious "rock" band). The Dead... they're a great cultural t hing if you're into that whoel scene, but their musical ability is mediocre at best.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I think it's safe to call Dylan a "rocker". In 1965 at the Newport Folk Festival he basically became a rocker when he went electric with the Butterfield Blues Band, much to the disdain of the crowd (he was actually booed I think). Highway 61 Revisited is definitely a "rock" album as is Blonde On Blonde IMO.

i had to change my top 5 all time fave rock bands...

how I choose a band to be in a list like this.. is their musical abilities and creativness... followed by how much of an impact they had on the music scene. Not exactly in terms of record sales.. but in terms of how much recoginition they got when they were at the top of their game.

    1. Beatles
    2. Stones
    3. Zeppelin
    4. Queen
    5. Heart (ok, this one may be a stretch, but.. how many bands had two female rockers for leads? Can't deny that Anne Wilson's voice was a gift from the rock Gods).

Dylan's transition to electric is considered by many to be THE watershed moment in rock and roll...

    I think it's safe to say he's a "rocker"

That was no mistake, can't stand any of them, especially that whiney ****, zero singing ability Neil Young...

This is why Radiohead made my list. And to answer your previous question, yes, I think Grateful Dead is a worthy mention. Jerry on that steel guitar, Lesh on bass, amazing live band, unique style of music, etc.

a band can be good or even great.. even without many hits. hence the Grateful Dead. huge loyal fan following. but the band never had much commerical radio success.

I have heard of Radiohead, but i don't know any of their music.
