I agree with what you are saying Tom - I try to give cyclists as much room as I can. That said, it seems that many cyclists go out of their way to be obnoxious - riding in the middle of the traffic lane when there is ample shoulder for them to ride on, riding 3-4 abreast instead of single file, etc. When I lived in MT, there was a group of 200 or so cyclists that called themselves "critical mass". Yeah, those cyclists make me mad as well and give cyclists a bad rap. That's why I mentioned that respect has to go both ways. They interpret the law to where they can block traffic whenever and however they like.
I guess they never heard of letting cars pass, if there are more than 6 cars that is being held up. Tractors in farm country usually are aware enough and courteous enough to do this, there is no reason why cyclists can't either.
I understand and empathize with both sides. The only solution is to have bike lanes but that involves money and the government. Money usually isn't an issue, it's the latter that is.
No matter whether you drive a vehicle or ride a bike, we are all human and we should treat each other as such.
