Well -- in fairness
the tape width is the same (1/4 inch) and the tape speed, 3-3/4 ips, was one of the choices (albeit not a great one) on consumer grade reel to reel decks in the old days... but, yeah, someone's either crafting humorous fiction to ensure internet fame or they were drinkin' the bong water before typing. 
This being said, there were some eight-track, quarter-inch "prosumer" (barely) reel to reel decks made & sold (e.g., by Fostex). Utterly incompatible with 8-track cartridge tape format, of course (kinda by definition), they were aimed at the "garage band"/MTV star wannabe market, I think -- for studio-style multitrack work (as opposed to listening to Journey or Barb[a]ra Streisand at home or in the car). They were also not particularly well designed or built, apparently, and haven't held up too well.

How can you trust ANYONE that owns 6 Barbra Streisand 8-tracks and 2 Engelbert Humperdinck 8-tracks, let alone not being able to spell either of their names properly?
