It’s how a Tie fighter is born.
It’s going to grow up to be a majestic star fighter, that will get easily blown up by a X-Wing fighter…

Probably for heating up the housing to install new bearing races and seals. If you put the races and seals in the deep freezer they will slide right in.Gustard X26 Pro DAC

Possibly attempting 'seasoning' (heat treating) the cast iron?
The pinion bearing races are easy to knock out with a drift punch, alternating side to side. Installing the differential bearing preload shims can be easier with a case spreader, though you can use steel shims and drive them in with a punch.
The factory uses a case spreader and typically used ground flat cast-iron shims to set ring gear backlash and bearing preload. Those cast shims can crack easily if you pound them in under tension. If you replace diff bearings, tolerance stack ups can make the OEM cast shims useless for preload and setting backlash.
Removable third members typically have screw adjusters for backlash/bearing preload.
The pictured diff housing uses a full-floating axle. On a full floater, a spindle is attached to the outer end of the axle housing. The wheel hub is mounted on this spindle and rides on tapered roller bearings. It is this assembly that carries the vehicle weight. A full-floating axle system is considerably stronger than an equivalently sized semi-floating system. Semi-float the axle rides on a bearing in diff housing and the wheel bolts directly to it.
