Okay...we smoothed it out AND...it's not going back. We just made an agreement to discuss these things beforehand and I guess I can live with that to keep the peace. So thanks you guys for all your help. It was really good to get different viewpoints. :)

Maybe the guy prefered another brand of subwoofer ;)

Kidding aside, my wife STILL brings it up occasionally about how mad she was the I bought a $650 digital camera without telling her. Mind you I immediately sold all my film camera gear, our other digital, and film scanner for more than $1400 combined. Sad thing is I did "run it by her" and told her I was thinking of doing this to "simplify" our camera situation. She didn't seem to object, so I just pulled the trigger when I found the best deal. She was mad because I didn't discuss it again when I actually bought it.

Needless to say, other upgrades have been done with much more cunning and stealth if needed. She never noticed the upgrade from the Denon 2802 to the 4802. Did local pickup and swapped it out when she was gone. To her its just a black box up there. As long as the universal remote hasn't changed she doesn't notice these things. Bringing in the SVS sub couldn't be hiden though. I just had to wait to sell a few things before I bought it and I financed it from my PayPal. She never asked and I never told her how much it cost.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

If buying a sub is all it takes to split you 2, there's underlying issues.

My wife does not question my purchases, but as a courtesy I always let her know when I'm buying something, say over $300....and I seek her opinion. It's the right thing to do. I try to make sure I'm not being selfish with my buys as well---example; I won't spend $1000 bucks on something, and then take her to some place cheesy for vacation, again, that ain't right.

Oh and I forgot to say that he found out how much it was by looking on the internet and doing his own research. It was ok until then...
THIS is what would make me mad....If you want to know how much it costs...ASK! You gotta think this is something that will be repeated with other things...

My wife and I trust each other to spend what we know we can afford. She might get pissed because there is another "BIG UGLY BOX" in the den...but she won't **** because of what I paid...because she knows it's not "too much".

Okay first off if Wingnut WAS married I would think that there would be some type of consultation before the purchase, but since there is no ring on her finger, they share the bills with their own accounts, then I would say there should be no guilt factor, nor any consultation on any of your purchases until there is some type of stronger "union".

I asked an old girlfriend to do something for me one time, she said no, I kinda got pissed, and she pointed out that she had no ring on her finger and she could do as she pleased, so I agreed. Then I dumped her and married someone else. But that was just out of spite. ;)

I have been sneaky also. I don't like to be but mysteriously one night the Polk Fairy came and replaced my Rti100s with LSi15's. He never noticed. Also the Denon Fairy came one night and beat the crap out of the Sony Fairy and replaced my Sony DVD with the Denon 2910. I guess he just never heard the struggle :D

There are some other issues also of course...I mean we just bought this house and it was way expensive so he is stressing about that. I wish he was into HT like I am ..but he does enjoy watching the Red Sox in HD on my Tv - that I can assure you.

You sure this guy is straight????? Is his name Mark, Rick, or Steve? I mean does he have a fondness for track lighting? If you were to say the names Manolo Blahnik or Louis Vuitton would he know what you were reffering to, or even worse smile????

He says it's either the sub or him and to send it back.

    Holy crap!

It doesn't matter what someone else has to do in their house or their relationship. It all has no bearing on your circumstance. It's a case by case type of thing. Under the conditions you've set forth, I see it as your prerogative to make the purchase.

Bossing you around seems to be more important to him than keeping the relationship. I wouldn't sent it back, I tell him to grow up and get over it. (Right now I'm tring to picture him bent over and you with your feet planted firmly on the sub seeing how well it would fit up his a**.) :D

All in good fun.. He is a rather manly man outside of the electronic stuff. An outdoorsy kinda guy really. Not into computers or stereos or stuff like that. I am the Geek in this relationship. He is just very responsible and frugal and ,ok , maybe a little controlling but guess what? I am keeping the sub and for all his barking guess who is still here. Hey Darla, from the sounds of it, I think you should keep the sub & tell him that until he puts a ring on your finger & says I do, and you have a joint checking account, what you do with YOUR money is your business.

As long as BOTH of you are keeping up with your obligations FIRST, then this shouldn't be a big deal.

This would be different if the 2 of you were married, then I would say that you should have at least given him a heads up about the purchase.

But since you are not, tell him to not let the door hit him on the way out, & make sure he only takes what belongs to him when he leaves!
