castlevania: symphony of the night (playstation)
drop-dead goreous 2-D color palette no system will ever have the cajones to attempt again (not to mention that music...)
honorable mention: Rygar (the original for NES) -- original, immersive, and excellent soundtrack :)

Actually, you should check out the GBA / DS Castlevania games. I would go so far to say that the newest one, Dawn of Sorrow, is better than Symphony of the Night in every way except for the soundtrack.

i haven't played videogames since SOTN & MGS. Just never caught the 3-D bandwagon. That was almost 10years ago. Not interested in videogames anymore but thanks for the advice lanion.

the castlevania games are the reason i got a GBA, but haven't picked up Dawn of Sorrow yet....
i heard somewhere that konami releases the games in the series for only three months at a time, then pulls the remainder off the market (i've even heard that used copies "disappear")
supposedly, this a marketing attempt to build a rabid fan base that will buy quickly before word of mouth hits
not that "word of mouth" has ever been that bad for the series -- with the possible exception of the N64 disasters, and poor illumination in Circle of the Moon
initially, this sounds ridiculous, but have you ever attempted to hunt down older installments?
before, e-bay... finding symphony was a lost cause

    i agree...
there was a sharp decline in my gaming with the introduction of 3-D...
not to sound old-fashioned, but the "pick up and play" nature of some of the older games is severely deficient in many of the new titles
nothing against GTA (or even the newer incarnations of Metal Gear), but they're simply not as fun... though highly revolutionary on a technical level
think of how many times you might pick up the original contra just to "play it to the end" vs how many times you found yourself firing up Jak and Daxter 7 (no matter how many game of the year awards it garners) :p
    IMHO

I searched for freakin ever to try and find a copy of symphony of the night before turning to ebay and buying a brand new copy. Hate to say it but I think my brother lost it when I lent it to him... :(

Awesome game that really shows how great side scrollers can be. I grew up with snes games so this game appeals to me unlike like no 3d version ever could.

Nintendo is all about pick up and play gameplay... especially with the DS and the upcoming Revolution console. Their targer market is getting people who don't play games, or used to, to give new ones a try. They seem to be the only true innovators in gaming these days, so I wish them luck with the Revolution.

Same goes with me, I'll probably be one of their pre-orders for their system.

My Favorite games are (In no particular order)...

    -Starcraft
    -Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    -Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
    -Half-life 1 and 2 (moreso with 1 though)
-And lastly, Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow (they're all the same thing) laugh if you will, but you'll probably agree if you had actually played the game. C'mon an RPG with 150 playable characters, now that is cool.

Knights of the Old Republic - best ever RPG. Spent months lost in the game... second one blew. ha.

Civ3 - just blew Civ2 and Civ1 outta the water, and common.. if you admit it, who didn't spend countless hours into the wee midnight hours, playing.. just... one... more... turn.....

+1 about Wolf3D. Freakin' loved that game!

Got it for Xmas. Civ4 is indeed a masterpiece. By far the best turn-based stategy game ever made. I'm hooked :) But before Civ4 was out, Civ3 was amazing.

For old school games, my favorite was Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System.....man that game kicked butt during its time....

Ditto on that one. I put 100's of hours into that game. It was $80 back then and the most expensive game for that system. But man was it worth it. I still have it with all the maps and shortcuts. It took a while but I beat that game. The first true RPG title. Awesome trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Bankshot, you have a nice little list there.

I love SF2. I can play that game for hours. Have you ever played SF3 alpha, or whatever that one was? I think that one was the best. I enjoyed the SF EX + alpha (the 3D version). It was okay. Totally different gameplay and feel. It was a good idea, but poor execution. The sequel was far worse too. Being a SF nut though, I liked the first one quite a bit. Oh, Capcom vs. Marvel was fun too. Okay, I am going to hookup my Dreamcast.

After this thread and seeing a guy play a snes at a flea market I got the bug again. Hooked up the snes and I'm half way through Legend of Zelda: A link to the past. So far it's been great... I have some emulators on my pocket pc but it's just not the same as playing on the actual console with the real controller.
