Got my SR6500's!! Yippee!!
Got them yesterday and installed them as soon as I got home. Well I tried to anyway. It started pouring down rain just as I got the dash and door panels off. It finally stopped about 9 so I was out there with flashlights finishing up.
After a day of listening to these I can honestly say these things effing RULE! They are as good as the almighty Q but $500 cheaper. I think theyre also better the the K2 Power and as good as the ZR's from JL Audio.
The first word that comes to mind about these is smooth. I mean whipped cream smooth! They do sound similar to the Momos but are jsut so much, well, smoother!
The Momos got a little harsh with loud screeching guitar. The SR's handle it with no problem.
The detail is still there but its much cleaner sounding.
They have a very natural sound to them and while the midbass doesnt have as much punch as the MM6, it does have enough and its a much smoother and natural sounding midbass.
The crossovers are a work of art. The build quality is awesome, you can tell they spent a lot of man-hours on these things.
These are my new favotire speakers on the market right now. Polk knocked it out of the park with these. Performance of a $1000 speaker for $700.
Bottom line: Ill be buried with these things!

I didnt get a chance to take many pictures cause it started freaking raining and when I started back it was night.
I did take this one comparing the MM6 to the SR. The MM6 is a hoss compared to this thing. The SR is much lighter weight but the build quality is such that is feels just as solid.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

This was one of the very cool things. They give you a 6x9 adapter plate with Polk Audio stamped on it. Its a very cool piece. I dug it so much I dumped my MM6 baffles and used it instead. It did offer a much more snug fit.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

They give you all you need for installation. Tons of screws which is very cool.
The only things you dont get is speaker wire (so what?) and terminal ends.
The mid's terminals can either be used with female terminal ends but also have a screw terminal that you simply loosen, slip your wire into and tighten down. Very cool.
You also get a "congratulations" letter on a really cool paper from Matt Polk.
I mounted the tweeters in the dash where the factory 3.5" speakers go. I used the angle mounting cup and aim them firing back (the drivers side tweet fires over my left shoulder).
At first this was just going to be temporary til I figured out a permanent spot but I like them here so far. My imaging is not bad at all! The center is in front of me finally and with them firing back they dont seem to be reflecting off the windsheild.
I think Im going to leave them there for a while, mainly cause it looks stealth, and I want to compete in MECA's Stock class.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

They shall retire to my closet alongside my MMC690's. They are one of my alltime favorite speakers so Ill definitely find a use for them in something.
I was thinking of hiring Sid to make me some cabinets for them and using them for home speakers! But then Id have to buy a seperate amp that can handle 4 ohm speakers and actually put out 150 watts per channel.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Congrats on the nice components. I can't wait to go take a listen to them here in town. Where did you buy them from? Here in San Diego we have the Good Guys, Tweeter, Circuit City, Best Buy, as well as many independent shops. Hopefully someone will have a set on their demo board. Probably not CC or BB though.

Nah, Im keeping the Mighty MM6 for myself. They are still one of my alltime favorite speakers and Im sure Ill use them in something.
I do think it would be pretty damn cool to make home speakers out of them but my receiver would implode if I hooked 4 ohm speakers up to it and a seperate amplifier would be too expensive, especially one that makes 150 watts per channel.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

That wouldnt be too bad. Thats kinda underpowering the thing tho. The MM6 is a hoss of a speaker and anything less than 100 watts really isnt doing it justice.
But if that Adcom will handle 4 ohms then it may be putting out about 100. I may look into that.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Been fijitting around with the tuning. Tried running the tweets out of phase with the mids and it does seem to make them blend together a little better. The tweets were kinda overpowering the mids and this seemed to help.
I thought about running the mids full range. Ive done that on the last 2 sets of speakers Ive had and really liked it. It seems to "thicken" the highs a little. With my MM6's I ran the mids from 70 Hz up and turned the treble down on the h/u to -3 centered on 10KHz. Then I turned the gain on the tweets up to about 11:00 and the mid's gain to about 10:00. This sounded great. I think this setup sounded much better than the out of the box setup running straight wired thru the x-over. If that means I can make the SR's sound better than they did out of the box, I may just move into my truck!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

get an **** midbass then...that they dont do so hot for midrange, but for a midbass you wont get much better. if not, go to partsexpress and pick up a couple morels or vifas or something...

An extra midrange wouldnt help. Let me tell ya what to do.
Get a 4 channel or a second 2 channel amp and bi-amp those puppies. Run the mid full range, turn the treble down on your h/u and turn the gain up on the tweets. They will sound awesome! 10 times better than straight wiring.
As a matter of fact I think Ive settled on running my SR mids full range. This is my current setup:
-mid running full range
-tweeters out of phase
-mid gain at 10:30
-tweeter gain at 10:00
-treble set to -3 centered on 10 KHz
So far this is as close to the "sweet spot" as Ive gotten so far.
I cant preach this enough, if you dont bi-amp youre missing out on half your speakers performance potential. Its a **** to get everything tweaked right but once you nail it, I guarantee you theyll sound better than running them in stock configuration.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

mac - i would do that, cept i don't have $500 for the 400.4 yet . i'm seriously considering the midbass idea because i have to turn my xover up to 100 or 125 Hz on the highway - i need massive excursion in a midbass, which biamping won't help, but i'll look into doing both - that's not a bad idea... biamp AND extra midbass... hmmm....It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

I dunno, there is something really appealing to "plug and play" setups, especially for impatient people.

I see what youre saying. In that case I doubt a second MM6 mid would cut it. It sounds like you need a dedicated set of midbass speakers. Pitty Polk doesnt make a 6.5 midbass.
I still think you should try the bi-amping thing first. I betcha it will fix a lot of the SQ complaints you have.
The 400.4 is going for $400 now on Sounddomain. You could also get a second 300.2. Just turn the gain WAAAAAAY down!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Dont know of one off hand but its pretty straight forward.
You take a 4 channel amp and use the front channels to power the tweeters and the rear channels to power the mids. This way you have a ton of flexibility in tuning their outputs independantly. By straight wiring (using only 2 channels to power the mid and tweet) you only have the tweeter attenuation circuit which is normally -0db, -3db or -6db. That aint a lot of options.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

macleod - as far as using the momo comps for home speakers...
1- they're not shielded, dont put them near a tv or computer screen, or even a computer cabinet (goodbye hard drive data).
2- any 4 ohm stable 2 channel home amp will work. most 2 channel home "stereo" (not home theatre) amps are rated at 8 ohms, but are "4 ohm stable" - with power increasing about 30% at 4 ohms (not doubling like you'd see in car audio - this is simply due to design and current restrictions).
I did the audio system for my old high school fitness center many years ago -- 4 optimus (radio shack) towers with 15" woofers, 6 inch midbasses, and 2 x 8 horn tweeters in each one. Kenwood 2 channel stereo amp that was stable down to 4 ohms and threw out about 200 w x 2 at 4 ohms rms. receiver/amp was about 150 - 175 bucks... not a bad price at all.
it screamed like a "mo-fo"The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
Good point about the magets. Didnt think about that one. It would be a problem cause the magnets on the back of these things if freaking huge!
I wonder if my Pioneer receiver will work. It has the option of hooking up seperate speakers for 2 channel audio. Its not a discrete amp so if it can simultaneously run 5 8 ohm speakers it should be able to handle 2 4 ohms speakers.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005
