Then you have guys who wrestle and can also move, Randy Couture for example. He can neutralize strikers with his style but on the other hand is very boring to watch. Couture vs. Halme on the early days of UFC, that was funny. -
Bah, can we just agree that given two guys, same weight, same skill, and same general atheletic ability, the stronger one will win. However, once you start throwing around the other variables, all bets are off...

Agreed. All things being equal, itll be a draw!
Coleman did get beat by Smith because he worried too much about being buff and not enough with his stamina. Hell Smith kicked him square in the face and his knees never buckled. He has never been knocked out or actually beaten. Every time he has lost he jsut ran out of gas and sat down then tapped.
But as I said before, if youre big enough you dont have to fight cause nobody will mess with you!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Mac, we do agree on this issue, size and strength does have its good points. Size alone won't cut it though as it doesn't come free. Coleman lost quite a few fights IIRC. Most were due to his stamina but that's one of the trade-offs for size. Big muscles need a lot of oxygen and fuel to operate. To someone like Coleman who wasn't naturally big but gained his size by doing steroids, it presents a major problem. If the fight wasn't over soon Coleman was done.
Mike Tyson was an ingredible fighter in his prime. He wasn't the biggest nor the one with the longest reach. He knocked out his opponents with his quickness. Now you see him, now you don't, now you see stars.
I did a lot of boxing in my younger years at 140-160lb. I went against fighters over 200lb in practice many times. As long as you had the stamina to stay away and collect points by quick left-right-left combo you were ok. Once you ran out energy you started to get pounded. At that point it was all heavy body shots, at practice we avoided hard hits to the head. Probably why I still have one or two cells left. Of course if that 200lb guy was an older guy who had been slowly adding the bulk to their frame, you were in trouble. They were as quick as the average smaller guy. They might have lost a fraction of a second but still fast enough to get you cornered and that was trouble. A lot of the times they did run out of steam but not always. -
Sami, that sounds familiar. Only problem was I ended up sparring a guy at ~180 while I was bouncing around the 140 arena. Problem was he was as fast as me in the ring. That HURT... Not good times. Usually I didn't mind the big guys for 3-4 rounds for sparring because I could stay away from them for that long and picked my spots. Beyond that, I wore out and, well, pain increased.
Yeah, I packed it in after a couple years, I figured a good paying job was worth more than getting punched in the head so I stuck with wrestling instead. :cool:There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Then I switching to Am. Football and broke both my ankles. That was the last time I competed. Now it's all just to keep me in shape, physically and mentally. Maybe some day I will find a senior sport I can compete in. -
I would disagree that Tyson wasnt big! He was a mound of muscle!!
He didnt win by speed, he won by going in there and taking your head off!!
It was when he adopted the "dance around and jab" style that he stopped winning. Which sucked because I believe the "old" Tyson was the best there ever was!
Boxing isnt like a streetfight tho. A boxer would lose as soon as it turned to grappling which virtually all fights do after the first 30 seconds if not sooner. Hell, how long does it take in the first round of a boxing match for there to be a clinch. At that point, the smaller man would lose unless he was a much better grappler.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Yep, that new style Tyson uses sucks. His old style was called the "peek-a-boo" style. He was deadly then. Ducking down, moving left to right behind his guard, and coming up with a crushing left hook or uppercut would get it done every time. There were a lot of people that were pissed off about the 90 second knockouts that Mike issued, but you still had to give him his props. I paid $50 bucks for a first rounder, and I was sick, but I still was amazed to see it.:rolleyes:Main Set-up: 55" 120 hz Samsung LN55B650, Onkyo TX-SR806, Emotiva XPA-5, Emotiva XPA-2, PS3 Slim, Sony BDP-S560, Apple TV (160g), Panamax M5300-PM, Polk Audio CSi5, RTi10's, FXi3's, RTi4's, and SVS PB12 Plus

Tyson being small, it was in reference to his opponents. He went against much bigger guys but they weren't able to counter his fast attacks and were knocked down. Entertaining to watch versus the boring style of Lennox Lewis who was using his size. What would you pay to watch prime Tyson versus prime Lewis? On whom would you money be? I'd take Tyson. Age doesn't affect the game Lewis played as much as it does on Tyson's style. We all slow down considerably with age and Tyson peaked in his early 20's when he at his fastest. -
Lewis in his prime against Tyson in his prime. I would definately pay to see that. They were the last to HW boxers that were worth a squat. Holyfield? *gag*
What was Lewis in his prime 6'4" 250? Tyson wass 5'9" 210. Very interesting contrast. I think if Lewis made it through 3 without being hurt, he would have won. HW is overrated anyways, I'd rather watch reruns of Leonard vs. Hagler. -

ok, so i did that stat contraction stuff you were talking about on my bench day and it definetely worked. I did 10 sets of it, 5 with my arms up, close to completion of the lift and 5 with the bar right above my chest. i then did some seated press and cable flys. finishing up with some power cleans. my upper body was killing me, i did all of this on wednesday and my chest is still alittle sore. i can't wait to do it again on monday. thanks for the great tip!

OUCH! That hurt me, and I'm not there. Did they report his injuries?
I can't imagine what that felt like. When you attempt weight like that, there should be extra safety measures taken.
It looks as if it slipped out of his hands.

Im sure nobody cares but I dont have any friends and I have to tell somebody!!
I just got 12 reps with 315 lbs on the bench tonight!
That is an all time world record for me!! Im stoked as hell!
Been stuck at 10 for a while now with an occasional sloppy 11th but tonight I felt good and not only got the 11th easy but managed to squeeze up the 12th! Got up and wanted to run around the gym giggling like a little girl, but I was cool and acted like it was no big thing!

Why are you using reps that high?
-
I drive a beer truck for a living and its pretty damn hard work. On top of the 10-13 hour days of heavy lifting at work, lifting in the 3-5 rep range as well was beginning to hurt and I was getting a little burnt out on it!
I decided to lower the weight and get into the 8-10 range and will concentrate on increasing weight in this range. It should be easier on the old body.
Doing the same with squats kind of but instead of going up in reps I went down from 500 to 405 lbs and am going all the way to parallel. I was doing 4-6 reps with 500 before but only going down 3/4 of the way. By going all the way down Im only able to do 4-6 with 405 but its easier on the back and joints.
I will eventually go back up in weight but for now I needed and wanted a change.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Hey man! We are your friends. (I am at least):D I think that was an amazing feat. You are doing what a lot of guys only think about doing in their dreams. I can't do it! One of these days I'm going to bench twice my weight, one of these days...
I did make nice gains after starting again after 4 months with a completely different program from my previous ones. Change is always good, whether it is weight, reps, rest time etc. After 4 weeks I changed to a fat burn routine, long sets with medium weight and 15-30s rest in between. 5 times a week plus 2-3 times cardio. (hey, pool season has started)
I don't know my max on bench right now but at the end of a heavy set, the 9th set was with 225. Not a bad start for a 185lb guy. Next routine will be for strength. -
Reps are good. I like doing up to 20 occasionally. They're great for the pump and strenthening the smaller muscles and connecting tissues. Plus they're a great change of pace. I seem to be hitting that "wall" so to speak. I could use that pyramid routine: Start off light 185lbs(10 reps), next 225lbs(8 reps), 245lbs(6 reps), back to 225lbs (6 reps), and finally burn out with 185lbs. That may get me more to my max. I will start that routine next week.
