This is the temporary road leading to and from Banner Elk, NC.
This is normally a quaint, beautiful two lane road that leads up the mountain to our BG resort. I fear for the buildings that were downstream from this....some of the best shops I have ran across reside on that road. Local artisans are going to be out of work for some time, as it will take months to get the water and sewer systems back online and their is still no telling when some folks will get electricity, although the main corridors have already been repaired. Outlying areas are a completely different story.- At this time, most roads are impassable and we ask that people not bring supplies in person. If you would like to make a financial contribution, the Town of Banner Elk has partnered with a 501(c)3 charitable organization that serves the Greater Banner Elk Area. Tax-deductible donations can be made at this link >>> https://givingtuesday.mightycause.com/event/Supportbannerelk

Downtown Banner Elk on a normal day, before Helene. The restaurants are well known for their cuisine.
In other parts of Avery County...
and in Asheville...
Lake Lure...
Boone....(this is that lady's house...or what was her house)
Swannanoah....
Chimney Rock....
Bat Cave....
The damage is so widespread....words can't describe some of the stories I have heard. Not only from the media, but also first responders I have overheard and spoken with in our area. Legs sticking out from under a boulder, people being discovered buried under the mud. One guy I spoke with said that this was his first disaster. He said that he went to go pick up a shoe and the foot was still in it!
It's just heartbreaking.

FYI, for those that usually travel to the mountains during peak leaf season. It is advised to bring your own food and necessities, as to not burden the local supply of things. Be sure to check updated maps for road closures, you may need to take the "scenic route".

So Tom, serious question: The image you posted yesterday listed towns that are welcoming and those that are not. Banner Elk wasn't shown on that one. Are they in better or worse shape than some of the others listed as not welcoming?
NM: I think I answered myself after turning on the traffic info in Maps:
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Good catch. No, Banner Elk won't be ready for thr public for months. Heck, it won't even be ready for residents for months.
