Funny things your wife has said...about audio

I think I have said this before. I have my media room and my wife has the rest of the house. I feel lucky that I was able to get a house that had a room designed for audio/video equipment. She uses the room frequently but does not tell me how I should decorate, size of speaker or placement. She is OK with whatever I want.

Over the last year I put together a vintage system that is in my office for day time listening while working. Wife has not really said anything about that but I am breaking the rules of our agreement.

I have a smaller room which I keep other toys in, but it's not big enough for my L600's and my L400. Not really big enough to be an audio room. They go in the family room. She's not that crazy about their size, but did admit they sounded better than the 705's they replaced. They are the largest speakers I can get away with without having issues with her.

I do whatever I want in the smaller room and she has a room next to it which I don't care what she puts in it, it's her room.

If you are single, don't get married. If you are married, don't get divorced.

Deeply profound. I guess having a large pair of loudspeakers (or more than a pair, I suppose) is akin to having full-time custody of two (or three, or maybe six) kids from a previous marriage (or other relationship. Bit of a handicap (in the golf scoring sense of the word), I reckon.

I've told you all before that our potential to use the Frankenaltec cabinets as his 'n' hers coffins... you know... when the time comes was a selling point for her. :#

Nah, this is no big deal. If you are not married? Simply tell her that the stereo was before her and is a part of you. It is your hobby and will not be going anywhere....and at least this hobby keeps me (you) at home.

With that said, if she does not like big speakers or the look of your rig? Tell her that she has a choice. She can skedaddle along on her merry way, put up with them for the rest of your life or we can find a house where we have a room (dedicated audio room) so you don't have to look at it in the LR.

My woman choose option 3. Been happily married to that woman for quite some time now and the stereo rig has never been an issue, no matter the gear or speakers that have come and gone.

Stand your ground and lay out your crystal clear expectations beforehand. A woman should be a part of your dream(s), not the Grim Reaper of your dream(s).

We - ultimately - went the dedicated hifi rooom route as well.
That said, Mrs. H essentially gave me the (otherwise basically unused, although furnished) living room in the MA house ("House 3.2" as it ultimately came to be known) for hifi. My wife is a saint. :)

We think more room is going to be a great thing at first, but some of us just fill it up.
I think that's one of the best organized "messes" I've ever seen B)
And I like the way you've maximized the use of the 2D space. Underrated technique if you ask me.

Resurrecting this thread, but it was originally my thread, so I have no apologies.

Tonight, I started playing Steely Dan's Aja, and my wife started going into a rant about what 'Black Cow' meant. My explanation landed on deaf ears, which turned into an argument, so I carefully backed away from the discussion.

Back when I was married, my (ex) had a pretty good ear, but she wouldn't have noticed if I turned everything upside-down, but she could hear by golly. Got a couple of good quotes from her:

Went from M70's to A9's, her: Wow, they really fill the room (sound).

Her: Don't take this the wrong way, but your new speakers make your (64") TV look small.

The woman loved the music but did NOT like any "extra" bass. When I picked up my second Epik Empire she asked, "Why did you get THAT???" Me: You told me to tell you when I was getting something new and I told you. Her: I thought you were kidding?

One day I called her down to give a listen, when the demo was over, I asked, did you feel that?? I took the subs out and the LFE was just from the A9's. Expecting a surprised reaction, she asked, "so, why do we need the subs again??"

LOL if only. My subs are sealed and offer zero vibration. I put a glass of water on top for an experiment. Played Tron Legacy, bumped up the LFE and nary a ripple even in the harsher scenes

My wife was away for the weekend when I picked up my Maggie 1.7i's. I did tell her I was going to look at them & that they were just a tad bigger than the LRS I had for 2yrs. She was good with that.... until she finally saw the new monsters! My system is downstairs & somewhat hidden from immediate view.
I was upstairs & I heard her yelling in a very loud & I mean loud voice, what the FU....€¥¥¢§π are these FU...§π√ ing things. I had some explaining to but all is well now! She knew I was nuts when she married me.

The only comment my wife said when I brought the Tyler's home was "Damn, Tom! They are taller than YOU!!!".

She no longer gets surprised at anything having to do with audio and myself. I think she gave up a couple of years ago and accepted the fact that she can't do anything about it.

Tangentially audio-related: I finished the new home theater room while she was on a business trip. We have a two story house, so there's no way to run the wires through the walls without removing drywall, so I ran the racetrack wire hidders as clean as I could. I had spent more than two weeks building a media cabinet, custom stands, painting 13 foot high ceilings, sanding and painting the built-ins, and finally mounting the surrounds and running the wires. It was Friday night and I was watching a movie with the kids, and she gets home from her trip, sits down in the dark, and the kids ask her about the room. She says she likes it, and then asks, "can you paint those wire things? Those look horrible."
I mumbled yes and went silent. She immediately knew she had hurt my feelings, so she made it up to me that night. The next day we painted them. She seems happy now. The end. 🤣

Here's another one. When the LSiM's came out, I told my (ex), boy, if I could get my hands on those baby's, I'll finally be done!!! She gave me a "I'm going to strangle you" look and after a short pause she said, "Grow up, you know you'll NEVER be "DONE""
