Just a thought. I remember in one of the Polk L800's Demo locations, I "think" they were giving away a pair of L800's. You don't suppose the pair listed are from the person who might have won the drawing, and would just rather have the cash they might bring? Or, am I way off base here?

Has anyone directly contacted the seller to ask him/her any questions?

Mike - This is very likely what happened. I was at one of the first demos at HiDef Lifestyle in Harrisburg on September 17th. They did in fact raffle off a pair of L800s and an LG projector. The pair they had in the demo were black, but I'm not sure if they were the ones they gave away or if they sent a brand new pair to the winner.

Unfortunately in the drawing, I was ONE number off (the guy who walked in the door right behind me got the winning ticket) - THAT close! I remember the winner being (to my surprise) quite un-enthusiastic when he won. York being so close to Harrisburg, I'm willing to bet the seller is the guy who won those.

Had I won, there's a good possibility I'd sell too since I don't have a good space to set them up properly.

If anyone is looking to get a pair, I don't see any harm in reaching out to the seller...

"If" this is the case, I would imagine the seller would entertain a reasonable offer, being as he has no capital invested.

Imo, this sale is important to the value of the L800.

If it can't fetch 4500 nib on the second hand market, used resale is not promising

There may be interesting tax consequences on winning and then selling a pair of loudspeakers.

To the best of my knowledge, most modern loudspeakers don't hold resale value well in general -- the higher priced and more esoteric models seem to plummet even faster in value on the used market than do the massmarket/value priced models.

Now... stuff like Altec and Tannoy and JBL and RCA... that stuff can be an investment vehicle. :)

Better specify "old" JBL. They regularly do blowout sales, especially on the Studio lines. This is exactly like the Polk sales on the LSiM line. Those 40-60% sales direct from the manufacturer destroy any hope for a resale value for customers that jumped in early at full price.

It'll be interested to see what this set goes for, and what happens with this line's price point in a couple years.

Wait, what?! There's JBL that's not old?
    I believe you're referring to Harman-era JBL ;)

Yes, JBL blow-outs all the time:

... although there is still some good (and expensive) componentry bearing that brand name.

Let me know if you see a pair of these, e.g., blow-out priced, 'K? :#

(technically, the good JBL home/prosumer stuff is "JBL Synthesis" and is made, if memory serves, in Mexico rather than Asia)

In general the Synthesis stuff is an another league, but it all depends who the current VPs and sales directors are. The Studio 500 line that is now on blowout was originally introduced as the entry level to the JBL Synthesis line and it was kind of cross branded on normal JBL and JBL Synthesis.

And they do still "blowout" the high-end stuff. It's just still crazy expensive even at blowout prices, lol.

    The K2 S9900 you referenced, currently 30% off. A $13K discount.
Same for the flagship Everest DD67000. For those you get $22,500 off of list... but you're still shelling out $52.5K at the sale price.

    Trey - I don't necessarily agree...

They've only been listed for a couple weeks. It's the holidays. They have an extremely limited market.

If this IS the person who won the pair during the raffle back in September in Harrisburg, I'm actually not surprised at the price. Even the fact that they are NIB, I'd expect them to be sold for less than the retail. Who would pay full price when you could get them direct from Polk, knowing 100% they are what they are, and that they carry the full warranty and support of Polk? Additionally (though I could be mistaken here), shipping from Polk is included in the price, and any damage when you get them would be taken care of promptly. Are you going to get that buying from a non-authorized seller? So, I'd expect a discount buying from some random person, even if they are 100% legitimate. Now, is a 25% discount appropriate? Who knows. With virtually no sales history (outside of authorized dealers) to base it on, it's a shot in the dark.

I would think that maybe the seller really has no need for these and is hoping for a quick sale. These having such a small market, I'd think that they're a difficult sale, especially for pickup only. He's probably not wanting to be bothered with haggling, hanging on to them for months, and them taking up space.

The way I see it, the seller obviously does not really promote this sale that well. If it were me, I'd be fully transparent and disclose that they were won directly from Polk in a raffle. I'd disclose the name of store where the demo was (and where they were won). I'd also share a little on what makes them so incredible, and worth the selling price. I'd probably start at a bit of a higher price (maybe in the range of $5000 - $5500), but not list it as "FIRM". Having to pick up such a large, awkward item certainly costs a few hundred more in your time, your back pain, and gas!

SOOOOOOO... Even though I have zero affiliation with this sale, I don't think it's that fishy at all. I'd say if you are close, and had the L800s on your wish list, couldn't quite justify/swing the full price, but REALLY don't want to wait, a year, two years, ten years, whatever, until the prices drop, this might be a very good opportunity. I've never bought anything from Audiogon - is there any real risk in reaching out to the seller and asking some questions? Maybe get his number and talk directly? If not, what have you got to lose!?!

ONE number away from winning, dang that sucks :'(

"If" this is the case, I would imagine the seller would entertain a reasonable offer, being as he has no capital invested.

Mike - It was a very cool event. Everyone through the door got a ticket. At the end of the night, they drew a ticket for an LG short throw projector, and another for a pair of L800s. I ALMOST missed the drawing. I was talking to a vendor in one of the theater rooms and noticed no one else was around. He said they must be going for the drawing. So, I made my way back to the car audio area (the store was HUGE) where they did the drawing. I walked in RIGHT as they called the number for the projector - I was not even close to the number.

Then, the drew a number for the L800s - "2114248". They gave it a minute, and no one stepped up. So, they drew another number - "2114245". The winner nonchalantly walked up and handed over his ticket. Had I won, I don't think I would have been able to hide my excitement! As they were reading both tickets "2... 1... 1... 4... 2... 4..." my heart was racing waiting for that last digit to be called. SO freaking close, both times.

    Here was my ticket:
