Tubes still have their place, but I have found the opposite of conventional wisdom works best for me. I prefer tube power and solid state preamps to the combination of solid state power and tubed pre.

So, I have listened for several sessions now.

I went back to my room tonight to confirm. Emma (my 4 year old) and I listened to Disney Soundtracks via Tidal, and keep in mind it is only through a Bluesound Node 2 streamer.

But I have confirmed, I feel like the Audio Research 5se is a better preamp for my system with the Boulder amplifier. I did not think I was going to move from the Cary SLP05 for a long time, but after this demo of the ARC, it is the right thing to do.

I have not been this enamored by my system in forever. It sounds correct now, it is no wonder there have been many pairings of an ARC preamp with a Boulder amp (the combo of choice of the local dealer Audio Concepts on Wilsons, the other combo is D'agostinos).

I am very impressed with the ARC 5se, the whole reproduction is just more cohesive and more inline with what I expected out of my system.

The imaging is denser. The midrange may not have that bloom on the Cary SLP05, but it is still very present. The bass, oh my, the bass is SIGNIFICANTLY better.... to the point where I am questioning whether I even need a subwoofer (JL Audio anyone?).

The imaging is better, there is better sense of space BEHIND the singer. It is freaky.

When I listened to the system with Emma... it is far above, head and shoulders above, any of my other 2 system (the Sonus Fabers downstairs and the Focal Kanta 2 upstairs)... it's almost embarrassing how far better the main system truly is now.

I am very close to my ideal sound reproduction. I am not even sure if I want to get a preamp better than this ARC 5se, I know I have been eyeing the ARC 6 or the 40th Anniversary dual box or the ARC 10 dual box... but I'm not sure I need anything better than the 5se.

    It's that good.

For some reason I can't edit my posts... last train of thought.

I have been doing this for 18 years now, since I was 18 years old.

This is the ultimate system for me. I have to pinch myself that the system is actually this good.

I still have a few more things to do, the room needs a few more treatments and diffusors. And I am not sure if I need subs anymore.

The speakers are definitely not going anywhere.... I will wait for the next generation of speakers before I even think about moving up.

I have no inkling to change anything significant and have no speaker envy at this time (and none for the past 2 years).

    There's 2 camps of thought.

You only live once, push it to the limit.

I am content... why push it?

I am in the 2nd camp... I knew there was some deficit with my system up to recently... but I am still in disbelief that a preamp change corrected 90% of them.

    Hmmm...

... everything matters in this hobby.

I believe the preamplifier may be the single most important piece of the puzzle. While it is very true that the preamp can only work with what it gets from the source, and that the source is important to, it is the preamp that is the final arbiter of what goes out to the amp.

I don't care for tube preamps because they tend to add their own flavor to a recording, which can be tailored even further by tube rolling and such. While that may be fine for most, I prefer to preserve the purity of signal from source through the preamp. I believe this has helped bring out the most from my tube amps. They add warmth and texture to the sound without the overly lush and laid-back sound an all tube setup is capable of.

You could be right and a SS high end preamp might be the way to go, but the cost of a accompanying Boulder preamp is $25,000 used.

And that’s more than I can spend on a preamp at this time.

I did try the tube amp route. It was not a match against the Boulder but again I have not heard a majority of tube amps out there so I don’t know.
