Wish I could listen at decent levels at night. Alas we live in a ranch home and I have two kids.

Simple...buy them earmuffs for Christmas, kill 2 birds with one stone and crank it up.

Good point. Dang birds make lotsa noise, sqwakin' and stuff.
Now, a nice Norwegian Blue -- they're reticent.

Still floored that @machone can get into the low 20’s for background noise. That’s dead quiet.
I never thought too much about it. Maybe I should double check with another meter.

Ok, so I downloaded an app to my phone and got 20db. So my CEM meter from Parts Express must be Ok.

My Radio Shack SPL meter will not register below 50dB, so in my house all I can get from it is LO.

20dB seems incredibly low for a residence, that's more like anechoic chamber level.

    That’s what I was thinking. It’s 10db lower than a whisper.

Granted this is off a FREE app on my PHONE so I take it with a grain of salt, my optimal listening level averaged out at 96dB.

I think this is a fun experiment. My iPhone was about 5-10 DB off. I used my galaxy audio checkmate spl meter to compare to. It’s 3 pm in my fully treated listening room in my basement. Beer fridge is on, as well as dishwasher upstairs (right above the stereo). I got 35 dbs no music. My average listening level was around 96 db. The system is coasting along at this level, in triode mode on my tube amp (60 Watts). I’m sure I can get around 25 DB at night easily.

I use a Radio Shack sound level meter with a manual display and I also use the Decibel X app on my iPhone XR. They are surprisingly close when measuring the dB levels. Therefore, I grab whichever one is more convenient at the time.

What can I say, I like when the speakers open up and that happens when I start pushing past 12 oclock on my preamp. Don't worry I have turned it up to 3 oclock and never had my clip lights even flicker.

Well firstly who is this "NIOSH" do they even have over 100 posts on this forum? I didn't think so, why should I listen to them?!

I don't go much over an hour listening at a time unless it's Friday night and the little one is away for the night.

    Nice.

(going off memory, 'cause we are on vacation)
My room is around 35DB when no one else is home and the clothes washer isn't on downstairs. When the family is home, and the washer is on, etc. it'll often be around 50DB.
Music levels, I usually listen around 75 DB, and I'll have it on all day long. I've hit peaks of 95-100 before, but only for brief seconds before I turned it back down. :)
