I should have just bought it and Karma'd it along with some
MIT cables if I didn't like it I guess. I feel funny using the buy
and try that music direct offers if I'm not pretty certain the
    piece is a keeper.

Thanks for all the input folks. I'm getting serious about
    streamers for the first time.

had a Marantz UDP 7007 5 years ago. It was a not a favorite.sometimes it didn't recognise the disc, it would skip and glitch out when playing, then it developed a loud buzz when playing, finally the disc tray froze and locked up with a CD in it and I got so po'd I opened the tray with a large screwdriver and then chucked it into the garbage. Then I bought an OPPO 203. The difference was amazing. This thing loads and starts playing in maybe ten seconds. Works perfectly. Plays everything, cd, bluray,4K, sacd, dvd audio. I love this thing. I realize I probably just got a defective marantz player, so I'm not making any judgement about marantz in general. I've got a 50 in. panasonic plasma (the last plasma tv on the market, I believe) and the bluray picture from the oppo is awesome. Too bad neither the tv nor the cdp is available any more. No more plasmas, no more oppo. I heard oppo closed their doors.

    Hi David,
I thought of the 203 when Oppo was alive but it lead me to
the Oppo 205 which lead me to putting the brakes on
when they shuttered up. I understand the 205 is a much nicer
sounding player than the 105. I'll admit I procrastinate to the
    point of doing nothing. :/

Too bad because the Oppo 205 is an amazing player.
It's no top of the line Marantz I assure you that but I'm happy.

UDP7007 Vs Ruby is like comparing a civic with a Ferrari. Not a reference point.

For my part, I think I bought one NEW redbook CD this last year. There must
of been a few more that I'm not remembering off the top of my head.
(Coltrane, both directions at once) The SACDs I've enjoyed the most were done w/ some care for the format. That was my point to that.

However, my half baked thoughts are more to buying 4 figure CD/SACD players
today. Right now. I'm not sure this is the way to go and wondered where
    other people were at.

Hi Sihab, IMO a four figure cd player simply doesn't make sense. It's a mature technology. ones and zeros. Blindfolded, no one could tell the difference between a four figure player and a three figure player. But the placebo effect is very powerful, isn't it?

So folks buy Lamborghini's when you have Honda Civic's and Pruis's they both get you there right? Would you not agree that the automobile is also a pretty mature technology So why buy a 6 figure ride when both of the above will do just fine??

invalid comparison. Big difference in performance between a civic and an exotic sports car. Virtually no difference in performance between a 7000 dollar cdp and a 600 dollar cdp.

I'm not criticising anyone else's choices. If, in your mind, a 7000 dollar cdp has sound quality that justifies it's price, then go for it. But the OP, Sihab, asked a question and I gave him an honest answer.

I'm guessing people's opinions are subjective based on their

Interesting, and you say there was "virtually" no difference? It's possible there was a bottleneck elsewhere in the system that was preventing the differences from being heard. I had this happen not too long ago when I demoed some $450/m interconnect cables.

Anyway, I guess enjoy the OPPO then, as well as a fatter wallet. :)

yes,I suppose anything is possible especially in high end audio. But anyone who has an understanding of the fundamentals of digital audio will be skeptical of those who claim to hear a difference in sound quality between cd players.

You say "anything is possible", but then immediately contradict yourself in your next statement by saying there's no difference in sound quality between CD players.

You've also made some other "questionable" statements in regards to audio:

"As long as you're using wires (either speaker or interconnects) of acceptable quality, (12 gauge speaker wire and properly constructed interconnects), neither will have any audible effect on sound quality."

    And this one:

"I've been an audiophile for 40 years, and I can't think of any scientific reason why separate amp/pre should sound better than a good AVR."

But, I thought anything was possible?
