Respect

Good morning Forum Members,

This is Ken Carter from Polk Audio HQ. I am the Website Support Specialist for Polk Audio and Definitive Technology. Also, I get the escalated Forum issues from Ken Swauger. I am your bridge between the Forum community and the rest of the team here at Sound United.

I am seeing a lot of disrespect towards other Forum members going around, along with disregard for the rules of the Forum.

This is everyone's first and only formal warning about respecting each other, respecting the rules, and respecting Polk Audio.

There has been far too much bickering, name calling, threats, and general disrespect towards each other. This will no longer be accepted on the Forum.

So there is no confusion, here is what will take place if something like this happens in the future.

1st offense - 30 day ban
2nd offense - lifetime ban

With all that being said I am still here to help. I am the gateway to Polk Audio HQ. Many of you know that already and reach out to me directly. Also escalation situations go through Ken Swauger to me. There is no reason why you cannot contact me directly.

I am here to take questions about what is going on with Sound United, you can make suggestions to me about how to change the website, manuals, the Forum, whatever the case may be. I work for you too. And many of you who have dealt with me in the past know you don't have to wait long to hear back from me. I am readily available to help and listen to fix problems.

You can direct message me on the Forum itself or email me at ken.carter@soundunited.com

I do look forward to hearing from everyone on this with their questions, comments and concerns.

Thank you all for your continued support of the Forum.

Ken

    Hi Ken,

Like Jesse said I for one welcome involvement in the forum and appreciate your willingness to take suggestions, Speaking of suggestions might I suggest relaxing the auto censorship a bit. I mean you can't even type a 3 letter word that could mean someones behavior, a persons backside or a 4 legged beast of burden. This word is even spoken on commercial TV. You can type "A big pile of brown stinky stuff that's expelled from the backside of a human being" but you can't type c***. I understand the need for some censorship after all you can't have members typing pages of the 7 words.

All I'm asking for is some common sense and to consider the context of the post. If this is possible at all.

Now you can tell me to stick it and that's just the way it is, Don't worry you won't offend me at all.

Peace, Love and Rock 'n Roll. :)

Thanks Ken for posting that. Though as I mentioned in a PM to you before, dealing with this stuff has a lag time that allows it to escalate. If you haven't already, please remove the whole thread as it does zip for the forum in general.

We all love spirited debate, disagreements, but it should never end up in the gutter. So now that we know the consequences for the bad apples, what do the good apples get ? A cookie ? Shot and a beer maybe ? Autographed pic of Ken ? Personally I fall somewhere in the middle between good/bad apples me thinks, so like Charlie Brown....I'll get a rock at best. :)

Seriously gents, let's move back to having some fun around here, without the daggers and pitchforks. Now that I think about it, we never had these problems when we had the "tasteless babe thread" ....coincidence ? :)

Thanks again Ken for getting ahead of this.

  • Thank you all.

@gimpod I completely understand your point. This is the warning.

I will look into the censorship issue. With that said though if we are treating each other with respect then there is no need to use words that need censorship.

If everyone follows the rules and respects each other like we should be doing anyway there won't be any need for a ban.

I want this to be used as a place where people can share ideas, help each other and not feel like if they make a mistake they won't be berated for not knowing what a tweeter is.

This is a community and it should feel like that.

I think part of the problem is there seems there are no forum rules anywhere anymore. The only ones I found are in the ones in the "For Sale" section and they only cover things for sale.

If it was me I'd put a link to the "Forum Rules of Conduct" at the top centered in big letters on every forum page period, That way no one could say they couldn't find them. Before everything got switch over to Vanilla I think there were some but they were hard to find.

Peace, Love and Rock 'N Roll. :)

  • @tonyb yes we have chatted before about something coming down the pike for some of the "good apples."

I do have something in the works for forum members exclusively and I will disseminate that information when it is available.

    Stay tuned!

This is a community and it should feel like that.

I am not sure I have ever seen anyone berated for not knowing what a tweeter is but things do get a bit focused at times.

I can see how someone could become frustrated trying to explain for the thousandth time how biamping across an AVR with a single power supply is not biamping. I frequent an av forum where they swear by 11.2 AVR's so one could bi amp off of the extra channels.

I think that audio has and always be a matter of taste. Tastes differ but the one thing the Polk forum has always done is help to advise a person to find their taste. How many threads have there been where members helped a person find the "warmer/more sterile" sound they were looking for.

If you do not believe amps or cables do not matter then to me common courtesy dictates you stay the hell out of a thread where someone is asking for thoughts and opinions.

We had a troll whos posture was "if Roger Russel did not write it it must not be real". While RR has done some amazing work so have others who should not be discounted for their efforts.

If I am ever due a warning I will take it like a man with squared shoulders and a straight back. Some of this passive aggressive silliness I am seeing must be the work of Psyc students studying the effects of trolling an audio forum.

If I were a Psych student I could see doing it as a study but I am not a well person

    Ken,

Seeing some of the threads lately it looks like you're going to have your hands full. I hope you realize its just a few that are stirring the pot and trying to get members riled...I believe some are calling these members Trolls.

The best response to perceived trollish behavior is no response. In some cases, it almost appears that some people try to troll the perceived trolls in order to elicit a trollish response... And then all we have are pots and kettles.

I actually appreciate Ken's drawing of a hard line. This place is great when the focus is on helping others. Yes, there will be naysayers here, but I know a lot of Christians and atheists that get along just fine.

Regardless if you respond or not, trollish behavior should not be tolerated on any forum. They are not here to contribute, they are here to try and start something.

    Thank you for the clarification.

Question please: When a post is "flagged" is there any action taken? I have tried to use this tool but often it seems like flag notifications go no where. In one instance, I PM'ed the mods a couple days later to complain and only then was it removed.

I agree with the fact the rules of conduct should be enforced. I'm also with vmaxer on there should be some warnings if things start to "appear" to get heated.

A good debate without some emojis can look like a fight, but really isn't much different than a group of us sitting in a room debating a topic....it's just that type-written paragraphs don't portray the whole story since there's no emotions involved, or facial expressions.

Again, I agree with the involvement so glad you are here to keep things in check.
