Joey, there has been lots of responses here, and, many of them good though spreading the entire spectrum...though I didn't see tonyb chime in with an offer to break any legs or send a sanitation truck by his house, but, I'm a firm believer in straight forward communication. With everything that's transpired here you probably have a battle going on in your head about this whole deal. Don't fight this whole battle in your head without giving this guy a chance. Contact him and see what he says. Show him the pics and see what his reaction is. That's a starting point. Until you do that you can continue this war in your head till you're sick over the whole thing. In the end, it's a piece of furniture not brain nor heart surgery.
Contact the guy and see where he stands, that will determine your options. -

I would just buy stands and keep them in storage since these are hard to find, I would just use these stands as they will probably get dinged.
8/10 is perfect face front baffle, his is not. The stands are a whole 'nother can of worms.

Send it all back. Buy the speakers then have the stands built or buy them. $500 is to much for those stands.

Did he give any explanation for the damage? If he "caved" on the refund immediately, it seems to indicate he knew about it. If he protested that it was shipping damage but would be willing to refund anyway, then perhaps he didn't know about it and is just trying to make you comfortable enough to keep them.
Either way, I would take the refund if it were me. -

I said $100 for the 7/10 speakers rather than the 8/10 speaker her had listed.
I said $300 for the stands that are not saleable and not particualarly easy to replace.
