I know we keep yackin' about the quality of things today going downhill, but how about things that are actually getting better ?

Coffee cups....I have one, a few actually built better than any GM vehicle. May even be considered a murder weapon.

Windows- we make way better windows today than 40 years ago.

Car tires- seem to be a few notches better.

Carpeting....well I guess anything is an improvement on that old shag.

    Speaker cables....have shot upward.

We can also make a heck of a vending machine these days.

    What else ya got ?

Hmmm.....sorry to hear that Bob, I thought for sure a bad tube would be the ticket. Time to send it in for a complete going over. Did you bring up these issues with the guy you bought it from ?

Yes I did. He is a cary dealer out of Florida. It will be all covered under warranty. Sit happens. But after reading the cary pre shipping test procedures it leaves you scratching your head what could of happened. oh well.

I will mention that if I turn off the right working channel and then crank the volume you can hear a faint sound of the music from the left channel.

That rust underneath looks like just surface rust most cars get, but I admit, pretty early for that to start happening. That seatbelt fix though, unacceptable to me. I'd have them return it to stock form and fix it. I'm pretty sure the seatbelt worked just fine prior to this.

    Old washing machines last forever??

Then everyone should have bought one in the 60's, 70's or 80's and still have it.
But the reality, I thinks, "A few" have survived, and they are the exception, not the rule.

Dollar for dollar though, everything cost a small fortune back in the day.
Heck, a 25" Tv from back then was the equal to like $1,000 of today's dollars.

People could not even afford to get a 2nd "Big" tv back then.

Today most homes have several 32" or larger flat panel HD screens.
Things just change, not sure we can really compare evenly.

Sure, dollar for dollar things back then were just as expensive comparably. However they also lasted a long time for that expensive price tag. Can you say the same for todays consumer products ?

That's the aggravating part of it all. You have to incur those costs more frequently.

We have been in out current house about 13 years. I tend to try to take care of appliances by keeping them clean and not over using them, if that makes sense. We are currently on our 2nd washer and dryer, frig, oven, and dishwasher. Lightning has taken out a PJ and nice Elite AVR, but that was mostly my fault....even though DTV didn't have my dish properly grounded. Oh, also on a 2nd hot water heat and we were proactive and upgraded our entire HVAC since we were finishing off the basement and wanted the HVAC down there down correctly. The numbers are staggering when you start adding them up.....not sure how good of a deal home owenership actually is.

Like everything else, for some it's probably better to own than rent, others it's just the opposite. There are even a few that should never have even considered buying a home.

My father used to say most people who buy a home have no idea how much it will cost. Said you actually had to make 15 monthly payments a year, not 12. The last 3 needs to be put in savings, each and every year. Really simple, one year you may actually need 15 mortgage payments for a repair or 3.

The other thing he said is that you really never own a home. When the mortgage is paid off, the rent just goes down a little. Still have to pay taxes, insurance, and save money for necessary repairs.
  • ^^Yep, the local jurisdictions own your home and you rent it from them. I pay $450.00 a month to live in my paid off home.

I don't know. I was apprehensive when I bought my house in 1990, but after paying it off in 2000 I just put the money in the bank. Has worked out well for me. The trick is getting it paid off ASAP. If you struggle each month to barely make the mortgage payment then you might have more house than you can afford.

Unless you live in metro IL. Our property tax alone is more then some peopl pay for their full mortgage! The average home within 6 towns of me is roughly $6-12k a year. So let's take the middle of 8k that's still 666$ a month. Some of my friends who were home shopping could afford the home but soon as the tax was added in.....

I told the wife a few times, when we hit retirement we're moving!

So, what is better, paying the mortgage plus the property tax, or just paying the property tax? Even with my house paid off I still itemize and deduct the property tax each year.

True. Or... make you $$$. Sell and go somewhere with cheaper housing and lower taxes, bank the rest. Well that's the plan anyway but we all know how sometimes that works out!

Bulefox just saw your sig. pm coming on the lumin.

  • ^^I pay $450.00 a month tax on a house appraised @ 189,000.00. You pay a couple hundred more? Right taxes suck, but I couldn't rent a dumpster around here to live in for $450.00 a month.

@motorhead43026 my friend Mark lives in a 1700 sf ranch. He has a good sized yard and his taxes are $11,500 a year.

My mom lives in Crown point Indiana. 2800 sf home in a gated community and her taxes are only 2800 a year. No wonder why people are leaving Illinois lol.

Prop 13 in CA is great if you stay put. I bought my house in 1990 for $163K, and now it is worth $650k - $700K. However, my property tax is still around 1990 levels and is around $3500 a year. Of course, if I ever moved then the property tax would jump to the new property's current value. So I stay put. :)

News said the other day that more people are leaving Illinois than any other state. Thanks to the scumbags in Springfield for this mess we're in. 10 more long years and I'm outta here. My best neighbor just sold in Sept. and headed for Nashville to get away from this mess, I'm so envious of him. His parents live in a 500k house down there and pay less than 2k a year in taxes.

It's the school tax that kills us n Texas. I live in an unincorporated area, and it's pretty close to 70% of my tax bill.
