A couple years ago I made the same observations and people thought I was off my nut. My "theory" was either reduced jitter, or removing the optical reading portion of the process present in cd players.

You may have been the one who got me to looking into it, back then. I do remember someone on the forum brought it up and I researched it with a digital fellow who could blow us all away with theory and he assumed any difference was in the amount of jitter.

My other theory was that reading bits from a HDD is done "magnetically" rather than reading physical pits that may or may not be cleanly rendered on the disc.

To each his own, for me reading a book takes into account the book itself. I can't read a book off a phone or tablet. Much like the vinyl guys who say the experience involves the process too which adds something to the whole thing.

Jitter shouldn't be a problem with cd's, most players today have such low jitter well beyond what we can hear. However, jitter may play more a role, as you said, in other aspects of the musical presentation that we can distinguish.

Funny, because at first my observations were the opposite of yours. Digital however has made leaps and bounds from when it first came out and I think now it can indeed surpass a cdp and in some cases, a decent SACD.

It used to be, you had to pick one. Convenience or sound quality, you couldn't have both in the digital world. Now, you can....and fairly cheaply too. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. ;)

    We have vinyl.
    It is fun at times.
    A pain at times.

It does not get me more involved in the music, but seems to draw more attention to "itself" and requires attention.

CD or files, I just get lost in the music.
Vinyl is fun and different, but not transparent.

New albums - CD or FLAC files. CD's immediately get ripped to FLAC. Music stored on a NAS.

Old recordings...I still have a record player primarily for playing old vinyl records. My dad gave me his collection recently and I had to get a record player to play the records. It's a shame not to play them. It's a bit of nostalgia since I grew up with him playing these tunes. So I will never abandon the format.

The other thing I like records for is the fact that it kind of forces me to listen to the record from start to finish. CD and digital records are too convenient to easily change tracks. But with a record I have to stop what I am doing, get up, and walk over to the player to do so. Some albums are great to hear start to finish.

Yes, the article is correct. But not everyone who listens to vinyl records does it for the sound.

The ClearAudio Titanium was the answer... and a much higher quality of LP. Clean records reward the senses with sound that is holographic and enveloping. I have a copy of Linda Ronstadt's What's New on MoFi, and the sound is simply stunning.

I have been amazed by Stevie Ray Vaughans "Couldn't Stand the Weather" since I picked it up a couple of weeks ago. I have had the CD and SACD for a couple of years but the LP is very dynamic and full bodied.

Also an all time favorite on LP is Willie Nelsons "Stardust". Sound is fantastic.

Thanks for the tip on Linda Ronstadts album. I have had my eye on it but have not picked it up yet.
