Canyon or Sierra- Opinions

Any of you gentleman own one the lastest models? I am leaning towards the 2016 Canyon 4wd crew cab, for its slightly smaller size, but the Sierra is pretty much the same price for more truck. What do you all think?

I am leaning towards a five year old or less Toyota Tundra crew max. Toyota quality and best reliability of any make and only full sized pick up built in the USA. (Texas). It is a win,win for me. Good luck. D

Are the current Canyon/Sierra supposed to be (far) better than the trucks of yore that bore those names? I hope so -- 'cause the reputations of the older ones was pretty dreadful as I recall.

Re: Tundras -- they started out big and got HUGE. Ridiculously huge -- but nice trucks.
Up here, where a solid, reliable 4WD truck can perhaps even literally make the difference between surviving a New England winter or not... the most popular trucks on the road are Toyota and GMC (even though there are no really local dealers for either). We see way less of everything else (even Chevy trucks, inexplicably). ... and Dodge (umm, sorry, I mean RAM) trucks are practically never seen up here. We see more IH (that's International Harvester, if you're too young to know that brand) and (vintage) Jeep trucks (they used to make pickups, and I guess FIAT Jeep will again, soo) than do we see Dodge'ms/RAMs. EDIT: actually, come to think of it, there is a vaguely RAM-shaped heap of rust that I see go up the hill past our house (and even back down again) sometimes.

    Just saying.

My daughter & son-in-law have a fairly early (2002) Tundra extended cab. Old, but powerful, capable, and still pretty civilized (though maybe not by modern standards). Pretty nice truck, all in all.

    I have an '02 4x4 5-speed 4-cyl Tacoma -- bare-bones but unstoppable. I like it quite a bit.

    Sorry, I wandered way off-topic.

The domestic trucks are good enough nowadays to avoid buying Japanese IMO.

I think these new GMC's are as good as anything on the market, just can't decide which one suits me. Living in the suburbs on a 1/2 acre lot and a two stall garage, I thing that the Sierra may be a bit of an overkill in the garage and driveway. However, it can seat six if I need it to, and has a few more inches of legroom in the back seat of the crew cab. The Canyon's are much bigger than they used to be and could be considered full size a decade ago.

What do plan on doing with said truck? Tow a boat, camper, put a quad in the back, haul wood,...? How do they compare fuel economy wise? How many people are going to sit in said vehicle on a normal basis?

I grew up with Ford trucks -- my first love was a 1974 Bronco (to my wife's consternation)... but, no, they're just not common in Northern NH (and there's a pretty good Ford dealer here, too). We just don't see 'em much up here. In the Boston area, the blend of brands one saw running around was much more balanced.

PS Mrs. H's Escape Hybrid's over 240k miles now -- not really a truck, though (even though it kind of looks like one).

The rated mpg in the v8 sierra and v6 canyon is too close to matter. Family of five. Uses whatever. I don't see a boat or any quads in the near future. We are moving into our new home in a couple of weeks, and have many projects planned, landscaping, pergola, fencing, big speakers etc. I always have something going on. I have had several dodge trucks over the years, Dakotas and Rams, but have been without for the last five or so. Our Grand Cherokee, which we sold today, doubled as a small pickup many times, hauling furniture, tv's, exercise equipment etc. but always had to remove the kids boosters and carseats to lay the seats down. In any case the GMC will likely just be used as a pickup, and not used to tow any time soon. Our other vehicle currently is a 2014 VW Passat, which also only seats five. The sixth seat of the Sierra would be ideal when we have a grandparent with us, or the kids bring a friend home from school. When my wifes VW lease is up next year, she plans to get a 3rd row Suv, such as the acadia. So that will ultimately solve the seating issue of the Canyon.

Take it from a mechanic's point of view, GM (Chev/GMC/Canyon/Colorado/Silverado/Sierra) trucks reliability is pretty um...bad, only Ram's are worse. Honestly I spend a hell of a lot less time fixing F150s than I do the GM trucks. Just stupid stuff on the GM trucks too that shouldn't break as easily as it does, also I find the plastics in the interiors to rattle as well. Comparison to my '98 F150 that even though is about to crest 400,000 Kilometers (sue me, I'm Canadian) is still rock solid in the chassis and interior.

Just my views as I fix these things at an all make/all model shop.

Well said! I was die hard GM all my life because my dad worked for them. Bought a 14 Lexus a year and a half ago and it's only been back for one minor warranty repair. Had an 08 Ford Edge in which the tranny was about to crap out at 100,000 mi. 6k to rebuild and the car only booked for 9k,traded it off quick. I'm done with the big 3.

Jeremy what is a domestic truck if it is made in Mexico or Canada? Just my two sense. Only truck I would avoid if I were you is the ram. They start rusting up here before people get them paid off. More get bought back because of lemon laws too. Peace.

It is amazing how fast they rust out. I see a lot of rusty late model Dodge's around here. There's a reason why they are cheaper to buy than a Ford or GM.

I agree no Ram will be in my garage...I've had a 1999 Ram 1500 4x4, with the 5.9L, that I really liked, but the rust started way to soon.

I like the GMC trucks though, they look more elegant than the Chevy equivalent.

The Canyon is built in Missouri, so that's something.

I'm going off the beaten track here with opinions.

I don't understand why you want to spend that kind of coin on a truck....to haul building materials with. Unless you want to beat it up quick.

I'd prefer to buy a beater pick-up for a few G's, and spend the bigger coin on something nicer for the family like maybe a luxury SUV. You let the beater take the brunt work and the Suv can still be used for minor stuff if your careful for those once in awhile bigger things.

^^because trucks are for working not getting groceries^^But then again most trucks I see are just that, oversized, overpriced grocery getters.

I was there last night around 9. The wife was coming in from Phoenix, and the daughter from San Diego and lucky for me they arrived within half an hour of each other so I could do a 2fer with pick-ups.

One of the wife's accounts is Simplot in Boise Idaho and she had to chain through Phoenix to go to and from. Yeah, Simplot....the potato people. Still one of the largest privately held companies in the USA with over 4 billion in revenue.

Get the Sierra J. I've been looking too... Been beating the hell outta my Titan for 8 years now and thinking it's about time to move on again.

@Dabutcher . I think Titans are made in TN. Or at least they used to be... Toyotas are great trucks though. I've owned 3 yotas, but never a Tundra.

You take your kids with to get building materials ? Why ?

I mentioned the Suv for family use, a beater pick-up for hauling materials. The 2 shouldn't be one in the same in my book.

To each his own though, if that's the solution you think you need, roll with it. My only thought on that has already been expressed with reliability issues so I might widen your search to other brands also.

My wife has every intention of getting a new Suv next year...this one will be my daily...Going to sell the G35 as soon as we close on the house and I'm allowed to open new credit. I know I want a new pickup, I'd like to think I could get away with the midsize, but it's a tuff decision.

I think I read somewhere recently that 63% of all GM vehicles sold last year were full sized Chevy pickups. I plan to haul wife and two kids and two standard poodles around in crew max double cab and gear under tonal cover in style. I know I am going take a five mpg hit over my current Sienna minivan. Paid off the house a year ago so I can take that hit. Maybe I will get tired of gas gussler , time will tell? Peace. D
