Oh man, lets not bring up H.S. days. Tony was a bad boy during those times. Lucky for me, I changed up the friends I had and pretty much kept me out of jail and onto a different path.
Fond memories though of H.S. also. One was front row tickets center stage to Stix right when they started hitting the big time.HT SYSTEM-

The 60's-70's were awesome. Great memories for sure. I remember in about 1972'ish Mom & Dad bought our first "stereo" for the house; it was a Midland all-in-one rig. Mom had grabbed a Niel Diamond 8-track to bring home with it--we were shttin in tall cotton.
+2 on the Granny cooking thing. My Grandma Clara could turn a can of green beans into a gourmet meal. Her Thanksgiving meals were pure bliss. Man she could cook! Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a hot Latina, and for my sins, they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service. She was a real choice Latina, and when it was over, I never wanted another.

That brings back memories of the big console stereo my mom bought in the early 70s this humongous pice of furniture speakers left and right you lifted up the middle of it to reveal a turntable am/fm tuner and a cassette deck that looked like one of those hand held ones screwed down to it. The furniture place that sold it to her said that Ronald Reagan owned one just like it, and she would play Neil Diamond Hot August Night and some Olivia Newton John, and at Christmas relatives would come over, she still owns it and it works.

Yep, those big console stereo's......heavy and huge. Many of those were actually well built, decent tube amps in them, components made by the likes of McIntosh and Fisher.
Before those, was big console am radio's, which I've spent many a Sunday evening listening to old radio shows.
Back in the day, TV itself was fairly new and not everyone had one yet. Kinda like finding people today who still haven't bought a HD set yet.
Funny how when you grow up poor, so many of your senses come to life. Especially smell, you associate so much with smells and it does wonders to jog your memory. Sounds too, every sound you associate a memory to as well. Smells and sounds you haven't heard in 50 years.
Bread carts and knife sharpening carts coming down the street, remember those ? St. Joseph tables a block long. Hand made Italian ice in paper cups. The smell of a real bakery/deli/butcher shop. The sounds of the city at night....very different then as compared to today. I think one of my fondest memories wasn't a tangible thing. Growing up in the era I did, the air was filled with the possibilities the future held. It was a changing time in the country and the anticipation, the thoughts of what could be tomorrow, filled everyones hearts.
I often wonder what todays children will look back on with fond memories. Remember when we had to actually use a remote for everything ? Remember those old desk top computers ? Microwave ovens ? Game boys and Ipods ? Bicycles you actually had to pedal ? Cars you had to drive yourself ?HT SYSTEM-

A 4.25% return on my passbook saving account with no minimum from 1978 is one of my fondest. Too bad I never had much money to put in it.
-
S&H green stamps, beating your siblings to the toy in the cereal box. They even printed records on some cereal boxes. Blowing up model airplanes and boats with M-80's. Roman candle wars. Shooting street lights with my pop's .22 bolt action. Playing "pass the ash" with the neighborhood girls. Climbing tree's to smoke cigs. Throwing snowballs with rocks in them at CTA busses.
Many of us neighborhood delinquents had mini-bikes. We rode around like mini **** Angels. Many, including myself, thought we could jump anything on them. Still have the scars today from that stupidity. Stealing tires without jacks. Prying out the pin on shotgun shells and throwing them against a brick wall. Ya had to be quick to get out of the way.
Washing machines with the double rollers on top. Skitching...dang was that fun, until you hit a sewer cover that was too high. Throwing knives inbetween anothers feet at 10 yards away. Every turn you move your feet closer together, still have those scars too. Dropping cigs inbetween two peoples forearms to see who would move first. Those scars have healed nicely though.HT SYSTEM-

I remember when we got our first RCA *color* television. That was like an major event. Dad let is stay up late that night as we marveled over that set. We sat in amazement watching show after show.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Heh -- compatible, analog color TV :- )
My grandparents were (as we'd say today) "early adopters" of color TV. They had an RCA upright console (CTC-7 chassis, for those of us who care about such things, with a round 21" CRT). I can remember watching Disney (then called "The Wonderful World of Color", on NBC), and The Jetsons, The Flinstones, and Johnny Quest (all prime time cartoons, in color) on it.
I still remember, and appreciate, the soft, movie-like video and color of those early sets.
I do, periodically, get the urge to acquire a classic color TV (e.g., RCA CTC-16 chassis)
They're a pain to restore and tune up, though.

My grandfather (my best friend when I was young) was the best. He died unexpectedly just before my 16th birthday... worst day of my life. But, the memories will last me forever.
He had a "Piccolo Club". Piccolo was the name of a camper he, I, and my brothers built out of old and new parts ON a 1968 VW Beetle chassis (the front of the camper was the nose of the beetle!). I'll have to find pictures to prove it. We'd rush home from school every day to work on the camper with him. One of us kids were the "president", a position that would change hands daily... One of us would be late, or do something wrong, and he'd 'impeach' us, and name someone else president. He always did so with a smile though! We had such fun, and learned a lot. That man could string swear words together better than ANYONE I've heard every time he'd hit a finger with a hammer.
Could share countless other stories about him, but the one that always comes to the top, other than Piccolo, is the Juicy Fruit tree. Every spring, the weeping willow tree next to my grandparents' pool would 'bloom' with candy - Juicy Fruit gum, Certs, Life Savers, etc. He'd come to my parents house (a stones' throw away) all excited one Saturday each Spring to wake us up exclaiming that "the Juicy Fruit tree bloomed!" My brothers and I would get so excited, run to his house (still in our PJs) and pick the goodies that he carefully Scotch-taped to many of the hanging limbs. Priceless.
Great stories here all around. I've enjoyed this thread so much gudnoyez! -
I remember a time when living with my mom, we were young and she didn't have much money. She wanted to make my birthday at the time special. So she rented this machine which was twice as wide as a VCR but not as thick and these things that looked like records. She plopped in a movie and my brother and I were in heaven. Darn those things were huge and it came in some kind of almost duffle bag to carry it around.
But you know which memories stick out the most? being a free child!!! Being allowed to play outside and ride my bike around the blocks (without a helmet). Eating and drinking anything without others looking at me funny. Dressing anyway without others judging me. Using my imagination and not relying on a stupid screen to keep me entertained. Not being afraid to be a kid and learning lessons the hard way. -
1969 the future looked bright. Man on the moon Mets jets Knicks were champs. I figured TWA would have regular scheduled service to the moon by now

I fondle old memories. The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
It is imperative that we recognize that an opinion is not a fact. -

Great stories fellas---WILLOW AMEN on the "free-ranging" our poor mothers would be jailed today. Boy, as soon as we could walk, Mom was like: "OUTSIDE, everyone!" Thank God my Mom had the courage to let boys be boys. I will always appreciate that about her. We had our share of broken bones and stitches, but I wouldn't change a milli-second of it.
We had "play clothes" and school clothes. Play clothes had patches on the knees (LMAO) and old grass stains that just would not wash out. What a childhood. I feel terrible for kids today...
SCUBALAB, great story about Grandpa too; they were the best, right? My grandpa was quite the outdoorsman, so thru him we learned to fish/hunt etc. For an orphan, he was quite a good grandpa, God love him.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2
