Finally got my project RTAs

These RTA11TLs have some serious battle wounds.

1x ripped sw83
3x ripped MW6510s (various sized rips, non TOO big)
Missing SL3000 tweeters.

Crossovers look good
No major enclosure issues although contemplating doing a cherry wood makeover.

Will eventually refresh or upgrade the crossovers.

Might sound like a rough draw but I got them for free on the sole promise I would get them back up in running order.

I want to try and repair the rips in the drivers if possible just to see if it will play. I've been skimming posts and see various answers but also that it won't with that era of surrounds.

Will eventually replace all 4 MAd with factory replacements, get RDO198 tweeters and a used sw83 somewhere. I want to reglue the inside of the cabinet and make sure it's all air right.

This is my first polk project, I have a long way to go but I am ready and excited!

Look forward to how your project goes. Maybe some parts n pieces will pop up. The 198's tweets are well worth the $$$. Im gearing up to do my RTA's also. There are lots of great folk here with knowledge. Dont hesitate to ask anything. Welcome to the forum also

are the rips in the rubber surrounds or in the actual drivers?

  • Just the surrounds. The drivers seem to be untouched except by dust. One driver is completely frozen stuff so I'm guessing fried voice coil.

either a fried coil or a shifted magnet, which is a pretty good bet.

I used super glue across the ripped surround on mine (screwdriver slipped) until I could get replacements.

Re-veneering these is a fun, but time consuming undertaking. But I was very happy to not have to look at that crappy fake walnut any more.

Magnet shift, the glue is so old in these MW's that it lets go. Get some Loctite Power Grab All Purpose so you can apply some to the working MW's and help prevent that happening to your good ones.

  • Makes sense! The magnet turns a little when applying pressure. What's the best way to remove to check? I wanted to reglue all the magnets anyways. As for the drivers, I've heard super glue however I was thinking of something more flexible like marine silicon adhesives or ive heard rv or air mattress patch glue.

Id just get another one.... Its been talked about here where some have tried to repair & gave up. I think there may even be some it worked for & the devices they designed & steps they took to do so. All interesting read. The Search Feature may help with that & tons of info on the 11's
    ..
  • Yeah I read a little about someone repairing the shifted magnet with a pvc pipe, screws and a lot of time positioning. Might be worth a shot until the bank account grows enough to get the factory replacements.

  • Got the magnet off without damaging the vc. Loose as a goose now, will try and reapply it later. i0aast4lzsst.jpg

Also started glueing the surrounds in an attempt to get something that is playable.

I know it really makes me sad to have to do this. =( These speakers had a hard life. Treated like garbage, almost taken to the dump. I just want to get these so I can plug it in and diagnose any xover issues. I plan on getting new replacement drivers, RDO198s and looking for an SW83 to replace it all.

Only if time were on my side...

Are the surrounds butyl or nitrile in these MW's?

MW6510s are usually plentiful on fleaBay, and less expensive than the replacements from Polk. Just contact the seller, and make sure they pack them well for shipping.

Yeah I found 3 for $30 a piece which it's a great deal, going to have to snag them up. It's the SW83s I have to be patient for. The monitor 5s I have are the SW80...fail.

I believe they are butyl but could be wrong.

It's worth waiting for the correct Passive. The 11tls are awesome towers.

So the TL's switched to SW83's? There is a full set of PR's from an 11T on ebay with SW80 and SW81 shown. SW81 being the larger mass.

Yeah the larger mass on the 11tls is still SW81 the smaller being the SW83.

I agree I'll be over paying a carp ton compared to buying some on e bay. I however need something to keep me busy and the experience plus the hopefully blissful result will be worth it.

Got the speakers at least working today although with glued drivers. Good news is the crossovers seem fine and I have a good air tight seal in the box.

They are almost ready! I can't believe it! I have however noticed a good loss in cabinet pressure (holding in the PR I get maybe a second or less until the mid driver pressurized back in place). I plan on sealing the inside of the cabinet seems, when it comes to gaskets a few questions. 1. Did the mid drivers and PRs have gaskets? Mine do not seem to, are there suitable replacements? If not what are good ways to DIY the seal on the drivers and tweets?

    Thanks again everyone!

  • You want armacell, it is available at the Home Depot. All of your drivers and passives should have gaskets. Other forum members could tell you more about the push test on your particular speakers, good luck.

Yeah I've read between 4-5 seconds is good (at least that's what I got from lurking f1nut's posts) I will try and get some to apply this weekend to the drivers I have in place that will stay there. I have at least 1 more mw6510 to get and waiting on Toolfan to respond to buying his PR.
