Any 80's guitar players out there?

Whats up everyone?
I've been drooling over the newest models from Charvel. They came back in 2016 with some bad **** colors, bad **** up grades and yes bad **** Split coils.
The San Dimas has a Hard tail which I have a 2013 model but it's been upgraded with a Hum Hum instead of a Hum Single.
I also fully love the fact they finally offered the Truss rod wheel at the bottom of the neck. I might like the more then any single upgrade they made.
The installed a Blade switch from a Rocker which I like both but the blade is what I have on my 2006 Jackson Soloist SL3 and it's way awesome and more awesome then the Rocker.
The So Cal is probably what I will get first but honestly I want at least 3 to 4 of them as I Like the Floyd Rose San Dimas just as much as the Hardtail which by the way has been upgraded to a more comfortable tail then my 2013. So I like that a lot as well.

I used to have a Guild X-79 - candy apple red, with a form-fit custom wood case built by myself and my Dad (industrial arts teacher). First year it came out before they called it the Skyhawk. Wish I still had it, but I was young and stupid in my 20's. Played a lot of gigs in HS and College with that guitar in the 80s before I sold it!

Here's one...of the most impressively well built guitars I have ever held...UNK guitar handmade by Paul Unkert of Toms River NJ... Unk worked on my Les Paul custom and my 76 Strat back in the day... You know who he is but you might not know his name... He is a master luthier and was the man behind the EVH Frankensrtrat.... If you ever fin one of the made in NJ models... grab it there are only hundreds of them... he is the finest luthier I have ever seen...

Wouldn't call myself an "80's guitarist", but probably know a song or two from that decade. Now, the 70's--that's a different story.....

Here's what got play time today.



I retired last August and number ONE on my to-do list was get back to the level of play I was at before life got in the way. I religiously practice a minimum of one hour a day. Saturday, that usually turns into three. Blues, rock and roots (with a smattering of country) is my usual fare.

Bendin' the G from '73....... I bought the Gibson SG Jr for a little bit of nothing because it had a broken headstock (common for that model), repaired it and gave it a custom "Purple Haze" metal flake paint job, and enjoyed it for years played mainly through a Sunn Concert Lead amp. Wish I still had it. My LP Recording is in the case in right foreground. Still have it.

Thanks! Here's what got all the play time today--'73 Strat in TV Yellow. It's a tone monster for blues/rock, which is where my head was today. All original, one owner. It was the next guitar I acquired after the SG Jr. (pictured above).

Mikey, Paul Unkert also had his hands in designing early Kramer guitars. Kramers were/are my all time favorites guitars. I've had many of them over the years. Kramer, Charvel and ESP were what I liked/like. But if its got a Floyd Rose trem on it, I'll probably like it as well! lol

Rick, the Krank amps are phenominal. Great great tone. In my opinion, if you play metal, and are looking for an amp. I check them out.

The APC I use for protection, it's an H10.
About the Krank , it's a Krank Revolution 1 2x12 combo all tube. It has 12ax7 4 Preamp tubes and 4 5881/6L6GC Tubes in the amp section. It has Fender like cleans like a Fender Bassman 10 and Crushing Gain channel similar to a 5150 or Engl style sound.
It's 100 watts of Crushing Power.
The Effects Processor is a Boss GT100 wired in the 4 cable method so I can place all my effects where I want them be it in front of the amp or in the effects loop. It takes a while to dial in but when you get it right, it's awesome.

How I even got into the Krank amps is kinda strange. I never heard of them until one day I was at Russo's Music checking out a Bogner, a Mesa Boogie and then the Krank amp the salesman showed me. I was there for the Mesa Dual Rectifier. The Bogner was slightly out of what I wanted to spend and the Mesa's clean channel was not Fender like how I like it. I grew up on Mashall JCM 800's and Fender Twin Reverbs. This is what I played and I was looking for something that could do both maybe better.
The Bogner as magic man as I should have just broke the bank and purchased it. But the Krank was magical as well. When the salesman told me it had a Fender like clean and a Mesa Like Gain channel I had to plug in.
The Cleans where extremely dynamic and punchy. Kinda darker then a Twin reverb and reminded me much like my Fender Bassman 10 I had at one time. I was sold on the clean channel as if you close your eyes you would swear it's a Fender.
When I turned on the gain channel, I almost fell out of my chair. It was crushing and clear. It had gain for years and man you only need to go to about 3 or 4 and it was a monster.
I didn't buy it that day as now my whole world was messed up as I really wanted the Mesa Boogie. But the Krank killed it for gain and destroyed it for cleans I had to go find out who the hell these Krank guys are.
Well I usually do all my shopping at Sam Ash so I went there a few days later and they had Kranks as well. They had the Dime Bag Darrel model and I tired that out. That amp is out of control and the clean channel has a OD like sound to it you can't dial out. Plus the gain channel was extreme over the Revolution 1 I played which I liked much better. I didn't care for the Krankenstien.
The salmon said they had a Krank Pedal that sounded like the Revolution 1 gain. I plugged one into a Fender Twin and the Twin became the exact tone I heard on the Krank Revolution 1 amp I played at Russo's. Needless to say I purchased the Pedal .
At Home I was rocking a Fender Twin and now with the Krank Pedal I had the best of both worlds. Man this thing is monstrous. After a few weeks of playing it I started to want the real thing. So I called Sam Ash and ordered the Revolution 1 2 x 12 combo as I was going to get the Head and 4x12 cabinet but the salesman told me about the combo and I was sold. Not to mention I got the custom chrome grill for a bit more. The combo was a bit over $2000.00 out the door and I had it ever since 2006.
I change the tubes out on a regular basis as when they start to go , you can hear it as the tone gets mushy.
Today I still love the amp but as a tone freak , I'm always in the market for something different. I'm trying to get my hands on a ENGL and a Randall all tube amps. The New Randalls well at least online sound like I want them to but without plugging in , I won't buy one until I do. I'm ne of those guys who spend a few hours in the music store playing everything until the magic happens and when it does, it comes home with me.

Absolutely. it's one of the only high gain amps with a wonderful clean channel. That is very hard to find. When the new EVH 5150 III's came out, I thought this could be a new amp for me. The clean channel is horrible for what I do but thats how Eddie likes it so that is how it is. It's not a real clean channel. It's sorta like the Krank Krankenstien that Dime bag Darrel's signature amp.
The 2 Drive channels are damn good on it but noisy like the Peavey JSX I had years ago. That was another amp that had a nice clean channel but noisy as hell Drive channels. The Lead channel was almost un useable due to all the noise. If you didn't use a Noise gate on it, it hissed and hissed. I hated that.
The Krank Revolution 1 is dead silent for a high gain amp. I never heard of one so quite. You would think it has a Noise gate built in. It must have a very proper grounding.

I use a Mesa Boogie MarkV combo.... It has a lot of versatility and settings... I think the clean channels with reverb really sound good with single coil pickups and the gain channel with humbuckers.... If I was still playing out I would have an MB dual rectifier and a Vox AC30 (for clean and crunch).

A buddy of mine has a Bogner Shiva. And that amp is simply awesome. But at around $3k its outta my range. I don't play in bands anymore. But I had a Mesa and a Blue Voodoo that I loved. I sold them off about 4 years ago. Along with a MosValve ProValve power amp, DSP21 processor and other rack gear and some pedals. I just got a little Epi Valve Jr head and a Valve Standard combo I noodle around on these days.

The Bogner amps are awesome. I wish someone around here would carry them again so I could go demo.
All the musical Instrument shops around me are entry level to mid. No High end stuff anywhere. I hate it.
