I'm buying... just maybe not this one. I posted on a woodworker's forum. The consensus is this is probably not simple lacquer but polyester which complicates things.

    Joey,

Glad you seemed to have made up your mind.

As I said, it's your money and you need to be happy with these in the end.

    Happy speaker hunting buddy!

Lots of opinions on a 40k speaker for 18k with a ding. Think about this though, what if you pay 22k-25k for a minty set in the color you want and it gets a ding in shipping ? Good luck getting the insurance company to find anyone other than Johnnys Taxidermy shop to do the fix.

I know 18k is a lot of coin....but it's also a lot less than 40k. All I'm saying is, if you expect perfection, pay the nut.

That little ding in that location wouldn't bother me at all on a top line speaker that I would be getting more than half off retail.

This, on the other hand, would be a deal breaker:

I have a huge problem with manufacturers and dealers who are difficult to deal with and difficult to get information from.

If the dealer and manufacturer can't be helpful in resolving a minor cosmetic issue, what's it going to be like if a serious functional issue comes up?

If this is a matter of the repair involving some super-top-secret finish that only the wizards in Italy can do, SF should at least say that it is a proprietary finish and they don't recommend having a non-authorized repair center do the work. At least that amount of information would help you make your decision.

I wouldn't buy a used, and dinged, Ferarri without knowing how much the repairs would cost. Same for a house, or anything else I'm considering buying that needs "a little work".

Proprietary finish. Impossible to do invisibly. Will affect resale if I screw up.

    Stay tuned...

I know that person. That's Mike Boivard. He approached me before he posted on audiogon. His price to me was $22,500. Then he brought it down to $22,000. We never really came to a fair price so I could not pull the trigger on his.

Also, I prefer the original color. That was the color that Serblin wanted and the color of the actual Stradivarius violins.

Nothing can mess with this guy:

    Jesse,

The BW 802 Diamonds are staying my friend. Just not in the reference room. But I really can't let them go, they do so many things right.

Umm, I saw those speakers. If you look really closely you can see a very minor flaw in the finish. Joey probably won't even notice it. But they sounded phenomenal!
