I don't think a $1,500 discount is sufficient for this type of item with the damage you have shown.
It seems to me that if you did not have really serious reservations about buying the speakers with this damage, you would not have posted your question.
After all, the question is really one that only you can answer. It's a personal choice.
I wouldn't buy the speakers with this damage unless: 1) I knew I could have the damage repaired easily and flawlessly for about $200 or less. The comments so far suggest that the repair is not easy and that it is unlikely to be $200 or less. 2) I were absolutely dying for these speakers and could not afford one cent more for them (including repair costs).
It's the kind of thing that, as @gudnoyez said, can keep a "perfectionist" or "quasi-perfectionist" up at night.
Just my humble opinions.
I agree with some points you made. The retail is $45K.
I have made a budget of approx 20K for these speakers.
Anything above that and I reach into other audio budgets. If I buy brand new, I will have a difficult time bringing in other gear as I move up for the near future. I just can't justify moving that much cash.
I did have a dealer give me accommodation pricing on a pair of graphite brand new for 28K... but I did not do it since I really did not feel like an additional 10K on top of this slightly dinged speaker was something I wanted to spend.
I do have my eye on a Boulder 1060 amp and that 10K can easily go to that.
I guess what I can just do is if I do not feel like I want to go through this trouble, I can just wait for the next Strad to pop up. It's just that I've been waiting and waiting for almost a year now and I'm getting tired.

What do u think about letting low viscous cyanoacrylate seep into it? I emailed the pics to a local guitar repair shop and that's what he recommended.
It's always difficult to say what could be done without actually seeing the damage and it would really help to know what type of finish it is. That said, it appears from the photos that the finish has delaminated from an impact to the top edge and that the edge has some slight chips. If it's lacquer to see how the area would look after injecting a product I would use water first. If that looks ok, I would use Qualasole. If further adjustment is required I would use Blendal sticks. The chips on the edge are so small that I believe they could be smoothed over with 1000 grit wet sanding. After all that, tape off that section and apply a few new top coats, then rub out and polish. The damage should be invisible after that.

When you add to the fact that said buyer could easily afford to lay down the green for a brand new pair of Strads, it kinda makes all this fuss over a small mark rather miniscule. Sorry Joey, but you kinda walked into this one.

I guess let's break it down.
1. New retail 45k
2. Typical used price is 21
3. This one is 18300 because of the ding
If this were completely fixable for around $500 I would be game. If not and another one pops up on audiogon a few months after I buy this - what I worry about is that I might kick myself.

Joey,
What gear did you like most with the SF, better yet, what have you heard the SF setup with? How about room size, wall treatments and placement flexibility. What where the music selections you heard on them and source? Finally, could you compare the sound to other speakers you have heard, what makes these your holy grail?
You have me extremely curious with the Strad's. Thanks in advance for filling in the blanks.

A better deal coming along is ALWAYS a risk...
Even if these were perfect for $18k, there is NOTHING saying that someone will not come along two months later in a bad spot and dump another perfect set for $16k.
Even if it cost you $1,500 to repair, you're still coming out ahead.
If it's the speaker you have spent a year searching for and they only have a slight, repairable ding and you're getting them for $2,700 under normal asking. It's a big fat go for it in my book.
Can you pay the dealer to have it repaired before they even ship to you? Can the dealer (or you) ship back to SF for repair, then send them to you? If you have waited a year looking for a speaker like this, whats waiting a bit longer to get an amazing set of speakers repaired back to new condition?
I get it, you're dumping a TON of money on these and I get why you want them perfect. But as I tell anyone that is being a bit too picky when buying a used item, "if you want them to be perfect, go pay the full retail for them, like I did".
Remember buddy, you're getting these for well under half off full retail. A little ding that you can fix, it's nothing.
You're getting a great deal on an amazing set of speakers. Oh, and you still keep your funds intact to buy lots of other goodies. Sounds like win, win to me...
In end Joey, it's your money (A LOT of your money), you need to just follow your gut and not drive yourself crazy looking for the mystical BEST deal.

Hey Halen buddy
So to answer your questions:
1. SF Strads - best I've heard, was on a full Chord gear. Room was bigger than mine and probably better treated. I have included a photo.
2. On them, I demo'd my own music, stuff I'm familiar with.
3. How did they compare? I thought by far, they were the most realistic sounding I've heard. Of all the speakers I've ever heard, even whatever I have set up in my room... the difference is nearly night and day. I have listened to full Wilsons from Alexia to Sasha 2 to Sasha 1 to Sophia 3 on ARC/D'Agostinos/Boulders, from Rockport Atrias to Aviors on full Ayre Twenty systems, from Bowers 800 Diamonds on a full Classe Omega system, to TAD Ref 1 ($78K retail) on full Pass labs XS300 (100K) set ups in a room that blows my house away, to Martin Logan Summits and Magnepan 20.7.... While I have heard some systems with possibly more resolution, or more bass, or more this or that... when I took the overall sonic picture... it was the first time that I felt "This is what sounds right to me".
Now, I will say that I have not heard some less mainstream brands as Sean (zero) says... I have not heard up and down the Usher brand or Rosso or Kef or Vivid or Tannoy or the Focal Utopias or Martens or Kharmas or MBL...
... there has to be something right about the Strads considering the following. That many people can't be wrong and if I heard it and I thought it was nice, that's good enough for me.
How good are they? Have you ever heard a speaker where you just threw your hands up and say - "Alright, I'm done." No more auditioning, no more looking at more brands, no more a/b, no more demoing, no more lugging my CDs around?
That's exactly what I did when I heard them. I spent around 2 hours in the room and it was the first time where I felt like I was content.
Caveat - I have also heard Aidas on full ARC system (but did not listen for more than 1 minute because I did not want to get jaded).... it is very possible that the SF Aidas are better.Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R -

Be patient and find something without dings but not brand new for 20-21? Or just say, this is a good pair from a good dealer and good support and still young for 18300. Halen,
Allow me to answer this question in a succinct manner.
Holy grail = presentation of the sound, staging, and completeness of the sound.
Reason why I gravitate towards the Strads is the staging and presentation was just the way I like it. I have spoken to Skip a few times about how we both like a forward presentation... where the speaker/voice/singer is a feet or so in front of the speaker (not forward in the sense that the speaker is peaked in the treble). The Strads do this in spades. It has volume and density to the sound. Many speakers don't have this characteristic and it makes the sound very hollow.
The Strads are also remarkable in the low end. So much so that I couldn't figure out why their bass has not been discussed in more detail in the reviews (though when you actually read the reviews, they mention the great bass). It was just enough low end grunt to make me realize how deficient many speakers are.
For me, in a properly treated room with the right equipment, the 800/802 Diamonds get that forward sound staging that I like, it gets that powerful presentation (like someone spitting at you) that I like.
But where the line divides between say the 802 Diamonds and the Strads is simple - the Strads sound like someone is in front of you. The 802 Diamonds sound good. But not that good.

If it were me and it was my money, I would jump at this set if that ding was the only issue.
I assume there is no way to get your eyes and ears on these before purchase?
Can't you make up any pressing business in Chicago?! (That's where these are right? lol)
