Think I wrecked the Porsche!

Today I got the Porsche towed to the dealership after pulling off the road and into a car park. I noticed the service engine light come on and the car just lost nearly all its power as I was driving into town. I was drving a little speedy through trafic and when hitting the gas a little hard. Anyways when Istopped to look under it Inoticed oil dripping all overthe concrete and thought $hit!!! this aint gona be a cheap fix. Well Icalled up the Porsche dealer and the came and towed it away down the street into the sunlight and Istood there with a sad look and waved goodbye to my first true love.

A cool looking merc suv rolled up 10 mins later from thedealer to pic me up and now at home waiting for the badnews Ifeel its all over.

Liquid nitrogen and a solid whack with a hammer is all it takes to do that.

Sorry to hear the bad news PFB. Hopefully they can get it sorted and it won't be a big deal.

Sorry to hear this bro. Were you losing oil pressure before you pulled over? How much oil was dripping all over the concrete? I've seen something similar happen when a friend had a shop do an oil change and they didn't tighten the oil filter enough. Keep us informed.

Well here is the update, its the rear main seal thats broke. The dealer told me that its usually broughg on by excessive torque on the engine from driving it too hard but he thinks thst in my case its just failed over time as it happened alot with my model.

The O2 sensors failed in bank number 2 and there is a vacuum leak in the fuel pump but I already know about that one. The problem is not catastrophic and its totally fixable but its very expensive as they haveto drop the whole engine and take it appart from the transmition and just on labor so far they quoted $2500 so far!

If they have the engine appart Imay as well get the clutch replaced, air and oil separator and an ims bearing retrto fit. The dealer was super nice and he is willing to let me buy all those parts myself and he will fit them.

Well ....... at least one good thing is that even though it's a Dodge, it does have a non-interference engine. No kidding !
(the Dodge boys must have contracted out the engine design).

I'd have to suggest you get yourself a Dodge Neon. SXT to be specific. That way you can ignore the "Check Engine" light. Trust me on that. B)

Saw your ad for the KEF blades on audiogon and your Porsche story.

That's the problem with these euro cars, when they break it's an arm and a leg. I'm still reeling from that AC issue I had and mine was only $1k.

I originaly wanted a 911 but an agon member was telling me how the tranny on his 04 turbo cost 14k! I think the dodge viper is easy to fix as parts are cheap but still has that thrill seekers fulfillment so its a no brainer when looking at used prices.

And yes guys I will be buying blind from ebay like I did with the porsche lol.

Ahhh....the good old 60's when you could work on a car yourself in your driveway.

Sorry to hear that PFB, we could have told ya though that was inevitable with older Euro sports cars. Then again, nuthin' is cheap to fix anymore. That's why I'll only buy reputable auto's with a track record of reliability.

Good luck on your future purchase, though I'd imagine buying another off Ebay will give you similar headaches down the road.

I worked for Porsche for 4 years. We did rear mains on the daily, it was common in everything from 911 turbos to boxsters. We did them often enough that I could bang them out in around 2 hours. The engine doesn't need to be dropped for this job. and it isn't caused by bagging it or excessive torque, just plain faulty parts. But they are called the stealer ship for a reason right?

Surprisingly, vipers are tremendous in the snow....my guess is you wouldn't have a single issue with one where you live. Also another thing to consider is the trunk space for all those high end purchases. I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by NOT getting a Viper. ;);)

    OR

You could buy a LEAF.....touted as the worlds greatest car and saving animals lives every second of the day. Of course you have to have animal detection mode engaged so the car unexpectedly swerves away from squirrels/birds and heads for the sidewalks but, HEY!....you're going green and that's all that matters.

Guys serious life on the line question for ya, is the viper really a bad car for driving?

I get the tongue in cheek about driving in the snow but I have a beater and wifes suv for packages. The porsche was bought because its said that if you dont have experience it is one of two sports cars to buy. The only other sports car Icould have chosen was the Honda s2000 but I have seen many in town and its all dooshy looking dudes that drive em.

Any car is bad in the wrong hands. The Viper has a lot of power and keeping it under control when you get foot heavy takes some skill. If your not confident in your skills, then something bad is gonna happen.

I'm going to be honest here. I dont pick or NOT pick a car because I care about how others perceive how I look it in.....

So if that was the only reason you didnt buy it, I cant help you pick the next right car.

I think most guys in sports cars (Porshe, Viper, BMW, Buggatti, Bently, etc) look dooshy but maybe I'm just not hip enough to be in their club anymore....

Get the car you like based on how it drives, how easy it is to upgrade, how often it breaks down, not on WHO drives it....

Heck I tried to find a Dodge Magnum STATION WAGON because they are great family cars with lots of cargo room and a decent engine......

So your asking the wrong guy at least in my instance.

You buy cars off Ebay....why does it have to be in your town anyway ?

Honda S2000 is a nice small sporty car. I'd own one....but they don't make them anymore so parts are gonna be a problem. Why don't you look for something a tad newer, within 4 years old ?
