It's simply one of those compromises you'd have to make, SS typically beat tube in therms of bass reproduction especially if you compare similar cost products.

Reduction could mean decreased slam, or a sense of decreased extension.

Interestingly enough, through my 211fe the bass reproduction through 8ohm taps for these 8ohm speakers is remarkable. I think near SS or very close to it.

Nice rig....never though of tube power amp paired with ss pre. I always did it the other way around with the tube pre and ss power amp....or tubed pre and amp.

Wondering if anyone knows if a tubed pre would improve the op's listening expeience with the new M-180's.
    I love Rogue products, BTW

My approach is very different. Given your setup, regardless of small or large speakers, you purchased them for a reason. Big speakers should have big sound. But the sound you are looking for will vary greatly on preference and room size. Tubes, when you have it right... It adds soul..... It affects you. You don't wonder, you just are.

Agreed....^^^ Some vestige of tubes is needed for the OP. He'll figure out which combo of tubes /SS works best for him.

I spent some quality time listening last night. The tubes have brought extra life to the system. The smoothness and ability to listen for long periods of time is in place now. Like we have discussed I don't think the slam is in place but I think that is just a matter of getting use to the new sound. Don't get me wrong it has bass but the hit you in the chest thump may have dissipated slightly. The more I listen the more I am beginning to think that is not so bad. But I am going to keep the A21 and will have it available to bring into the system when I need.

I want to try the A21 on the bottom and the M-180's on the top but that will take some additional SC's that I don't currently have.

I will also start my search for a new pre. I am not in a hurry but if I find what I am looking for then I will move in that direction and sell the P5. I had a feeling this would be next on the list.

Joey needs to bring his Cary slp05 over for ya .....this puppy will blow your mind on what a good tubed pre brings to the table. Try it with the A21 and get a feel for that tubed pre/SS amp sound to see if that floats your boat.

I've seen them in the 4-5k range used.....not that big of a stretch. Ha...look at me, telling you how much of a stretch your wallet can handle.lol.

You can get a Joule for around 2500.....which is about as good as it gets in that price range.

Tony - yes I have seen them for 4-5k. That's a bit much given how much I have spent lately - with your help I should note. :) But if I can locate one for mid 3k I would jump. Lets all convince Joey to jump to the next level and help out his 'ol pal Todd with the sale of his slp05. Just think of the shipping charges he would save.

The slp98p looks pretty good also. But why not just hold out for the 05.

I just noticed that Cary has an slp98p on the website b-stock for sale.

Yep, it's tough for a tube amp to equal a SS in bass.

I was there with you, but I can say I am in love with the tube amp/SS pre combo I have. If you can find the right mix, I don't think it matters how you pair them up.

I believe the Pass Labs X1 will play nicely with the M180's, and they can be had for around 2k if you look around.

...and your amps, when dawning the Carver logo, sell for a measly $30k, right? Amps at that range, regardless of SS/tube/hybrid, should excel at 98% of what is thrown at them.

I agree.. for example, with my 211FE, once I got the taps right, it sounds fantastic down low. I bet a similarly priced SS amp would beat it in bass but I'm not aching to replace it or anything.
