It was a great time. I really appreciate you and Marvin taking the time to bring over the amps.

I am also confident in the need of a tube pre. But I have the deal on the table for the amps and I think I will just take it. Once those settle in I'll start looking at a new pre. I like the idea of tubes and understand my listening habits will have to change but I don't think it will cause much pain after everything is in place.

I know both Tony and Skip think a pre is the next step but I need to strike while I can. I'm not really seeing why the mono blocks would not take me to the next level of amplification. If you don't agree please talk me off the ledge. :)

Ha...no need to talk you off the edge bro. This audio thing is about experimenting some until you find that synergy that works for YOU and your ears, not mine, Skips, or anyone else. Glad to see the Texas boys helping you out in that regard, you just never know until your try stuff for yourself. I know I'd love to hear the Cary slp05 on those speaks though and I think once you do you'll be looking under the couch for nickels to save for that puppy.

it was tough as when todd turned up the volume ( after a few glasses) the sound did become harsh, i at first thought the parasound combo. skip said maybe the speakers needed more breakin and i remembered that i had heard the a21 a few years ago with hyperion speakers comparing it to my usher r1.5 and it was a great sounding amp.

i have not heard the p5 before thus it has to be the speaker breakin, preamp, or source.

todd, we may need a couple or more gtg's to sort this out. :p ( hand on chin again) :#

What are you moving to in terms of amplification? What's going to happen to the a21?

I think this should be the plan.
    1. replace the king cobras. I'll have dougs alpha interconnects this week
    2. bring in the mono blocks and start comparing the A21 to them
    3. give a good listen with the P5 in place
    4. pull the P5 and go direct from the oppo
    5. bring in joeys slp05 for a demo
    6. make a decision on a pre
    7. live happily ever after or until something else gets my attention :)

Im sprised to hear of harshness kicked up. How many hours do you have on the speakers? I know tony and my legacys have the older mids and different tweeters but probably voiced close. I have not expierenced harshness unless its a crappy recording like meatloaf.

Joey - I am looking at the Rogue M-180's. I am probably going to trade the A21.

ern - I think it was a combination of bad recording, high volume. The speakers sound great but do need more time. I think I have about 100'ish hours on them but also made some changes to the speaker cables recently. I think those need some time also.

That's a great idea Joey on the cary sacd player, but I will have to find a happy medium soon...or get a second job.

I thought they need 300 to break in.I would just play it all day and night even of its at low volume. I bet they relax a bit around that 300 hour mark or so. Before you drive yourself too crazy and broke, let them break in is my opinion. Once they hit the 350 hour mark, then take another look.

There is a few sites that show you ways to break in speakers by facing them to each other and reverse the polarity.

I think the cables have about 200 on them and Doug had used them as demos before sending them to me. I had to change the spades to bananas and they only have about 20 hours on that change.

Joey, bring those Cary pieces over to my place. I think my preamp is my weak link right now, so I'd love to hear what that one can do. You also need to get your ears on these now that they have more time and I start to dial them in. I'm playing with positioning right now with no regard to the big screen so that I have an idea how to set them up for LSAF.

I'm also willing to bring my gear over to your place (or any other Polkies) as long as the invitation is extended. One of the biggest reasons I host the meet every year is so that new gear rotates into my main rig, and I get to figure out where I want to go without ever leaving my house. I'll gladly return that favor to anyone else with what I have to offer.

Let me know when you're free bro

Harsh is not a word associated with Legacy speakers. I think if your experiencing some look at the cabling and source component's.

I've experienced that harshness your talking about before on mine and almost 100% of the time it was the cabling. Audioquest cables don't mesh well with Legacy speaks imho. I just had a pair of Python IC's roll in here, and couldn't stand it after 3 songs.

New interconnects will be delivered tomorrow. Then I will get to burning them in. When I purchased the SC's from Doug we discussed the possibility of the cables becoming a bit hard to listen to between 150-200 hours. I have 200'ish hours on the SC's but only about 30 on the new interconnects since the reconfiguration.

When I get the interconnects I am going to leave it running 24/7 for the next few days.

Soon up for sale will be the XLR AQ king cobras and also AQ diamond backs.

Ya know pal, Last week I picked up some Acoustic zen Satori jumpers. 75 bucks was a good price, but I also wanted to get a feel for what their sound was like before spending the cash for the speaker cables. Gotta tell ya man, I like what I hear. No harshness at any level and believe me, I pushed it. I think their Satori speaker cables and silver reverence IC's may be my next venture. Still want to give the Silnote Morpheus ref2 a whirl too.
