Polk Forum Tapeheads -- how about a dedicated thread for analog tape reproducers?

Oh, yes, TASCAM was/is TEAC's pro brand.
I have no clue about the DuKane; doesn't look like anything too special in terms of the tape, though.
I feel the same as you vis-a-vis mucking with the belts on the cassette decks; new ones are usually too much trouble to actually install for someone as uncoordinated and impatient as I :-P That said, it looks like a pretty nice deck; I hope you can get it going (or find it a good home with someone who can).
EDIT: FWIW, here's my small but sincere TASCAM collection. It's a pretty nice deck actually -- it is really too bad that it cannot take 10-1/2" reels.

Thanks for the encouragement mhardy!
This won't be getting done tonight.
Gonna need some time w/out a honey do list facing me. -

Pulls up an old thread with a few questions.
I'm considering a Teac A-2340SX and a Teac A-2340R.
I already have an Akai GX-280D SS and a GX-4000D.
Wanting to get some type of vintage Teac amp "silver" faced
and a vintage Akai amp "silver" faced to match them up with my existing stuff and proposed stuff. Trying to keep the whole Teac to Teac and Akai to Akai thing.
Any ideas on what model # amps, both Teac & Akai I should consider?
Not looking for massive power or anything like that, just vintage silver faced amps for my reel to reels that will be used in a 2 channel setup.
Thanks all.. -
Cannot help vis-a-vis TEAC, but there were some pretty nice AKAI components. When you say "amp" I am thinking you're looking for an integrated amplifier?
I'd probably be looking for something like an AKAI AM-2200, AM-2250, or AM-2400. Take a look at the integrated amps at http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/akai.shtml and you should find info (docs) on those models and some others as well.
Here are some borrowed photos of a couple of these from www.oaktreevintage.com
AM-2400
AM-2200
The AKAI components were decent but (at least in the mid-Atlantic) not very popular (beyond the reel to reel decks); they may not be easy to find, but they're also probably not terribly expensive (i.e., not in particularly high demand) -- which may work in your favor.

Mr. Hardy,
Thanks for chiming in. I do like the visual on those Akai and yes, integrated is what I meant. Mostly just wanting to match things up both visually and by make. I ran thru hifiengines stuff, did get a few ideas.
As always, wanted to throw out my questions here and get some advice from the forum. THANKS for the info...

For TEAC, you might (??) want to take a look at http://www.audio-heritage.jp/TEAC-ESOTERIC/index.html. The only problem with that site (besides being in Japanese!) is you'll see stuff from the home (Japan) market -- some of which never made it to the US. Some of what we didn't get was pretty darned nice! :-P
-
Tks for the link. "I just might" have an in for that market as my daughter made friends with a few kids from Japan when she was at college a few years back. One of her friends, Dad owns a stereo/shop business in Thailand "I think". I'll talk to her this evening about it. One of the girls she made friends with stayed with us for a few weeks during a summer break.
-
There's some amazing stuff that (even) the massmarket Japanese companies either didn't want to share with the US or they figured we were too stuck on Cerwin-Vegas and suchlike to appreciate.
On the other hand, they did deign to share the Datsun (Nissan) F-10 with us.
Go figure...

Oh thats too funny.
My sister back in the day, her first car was a brand spanking new Datsun B210 GX hatchback. That thing ran forever, although it couldn't do 90 on a down hill with a strong tail wind , it did get great gas mileage. -
The F-10 was just a little worse, and a little uglier, all around :-P
That said, the F-10 was front wheel drive, but I think (??) that the B210 was still rear wheel drive (wasn't it?).
-
Yes, the Datsun B210 was rear wheel drive. They sold a million of these cars back in the day. Oldrocker was right, those B210's with a 4 cylinder auto tranny , had pathetically__ bad acceleration getting on the freeway, but hey, lol, they did get great gas mileage!
-
I had a yellow B210 that I bought for $500 bucks. Ran good. Looked...

Gearing up for my garage sale, met a guy while out buying signs for the sale.
Anyway, this guy said he had an old RTR in his shop. He said the last time he plugged it in it powered up. He dropped it off today, Akai GX 280 D that had no power. Checked the fuse, there was none.
5 hours later, she's all cleaned up and running fine. Cabinet edges are peeling but I got an idea on that.
Apparently it came from a PX in Asia somewhere.
I think this is the little brother to the GX 280D SS which I have.
It came with 2 reels that play quite well with some very old stuff on it.
Mack the knife, Hey Hey Paula, Yellow polka dot bikini and many more.
Just hit the reverse and the other side is full. I think some of this is even before Lawrence Welk... -
p o l k a was censored?
The song did come out in the early 60's....I heard tale that era was wild..Sheesh -
itsy-bitsy, teenie-weenie...
prurient stuff. -
"polka" has been de-censored.

-
Gonna pair her with an Akai AM 2400 and put her on the shelf..
-
Case has some issue's on the edges and a spot on the top corner, the reels it came with are shot.
Yea, she ain't worth bucks but she's worth keeping out of the dump.

With my commitment to a 10 step recovery program to not buy vintage gear anymore.
I did see something interesting causing a momentary lapse of judgement in which I did consider buying this for no apparent reason.

I couldn't find much out there on Heathkit RTR's, it looks like an AD 22???

I don't know much 'bout Heathkit reel to reel decks, either
It's adorbs, though -- absolutely adorbs!
I don't know who would've built the transport offhand @KennethSwauger might recognize it.
Heathkit would make very subtle (even sometimes only cosmetic) changes and change the model number. Some of that may have been because they changed ownership a few times over the years.
This one (below) is from Christmas '63 and looks pretty darned similar in broad strokes (and FWIW). The portable morph is labeld AD-72 in this catalog. Same? Similar? Different? Dunno.

I will check other catalogs in my own stash anon & see if I can do any better in terms of a match.
EDIT: Heath probably "did" the electronics. Dig them cool Magic Eye record level display tubes, daddy-o!

It's very similar in livery to the Berlent Concertone series:
If so then it might have been made by Teac who made the Concertone recorders. -
Thanks for the info guys.
