  • God??? Hardly. Icon....for sure. good yes, but when you've been subjected to Johnny Winter back in the 70's like I was, Clapton's level of playing is dwarfed to say the least. You have to love him though and I do, but make no mistake, he's no guitar God. Maybe Jesse was having a PBR moment???

You can't say that boy hasn't lived up to the hype! While he's not my favorite guitar player, he is one of the two guys that seem to be the fan benchmark over the last 30-40 years. Every new guy is STILL either the new Hendrix or the new Clapton. If I didn't have anything in my collection but all the Cream albums, that would be enough for me.

Reading this thread, I discovered that my favorite guitar player is not really a guitar player. Read and learn.

His own assessment, George -- he is self-taught on the guitar and, I've read (yeah... on the Internet) that he didn't really consider himself a guitarist per se -- or, if you prefer, per say :- )

    ... and he was a m o' f o of a guitar player.

EDIT - or maybe I hallucinated it... I dunno. He was an eclectic guitarist, fo' sho.

Did you ever see the And band (Rick Derringer, Randy Jo Hobbs and Bobby Caldwell?) live? Bobby's drumming on that ". . . And Live" album is still one of my benchmarks.

Hmmm wonder who that could be? (Kidding) George were all aware for your fondness of Frank. I read (correct me if I'm wrong) that he didn't pick up a guitar until his late twenties and was self taught with the help of no one. It payed off as he has some of the most memorable solos I've ever heard.

EC is still a heck of a guitarist and in the early 70's he was GOD for a while anyways.

Yes, yes sir. Bobby Caldwell is a son of a gun hitter. I love him in Captain Beyond "Dancing Madly Backwards" one of my favorite tunes of all time. hung out with Jo Hobbs after a St Paul Mn show in 77 and what a party animal, & a helluva bass player. Yes Derringer is another total bad **** that just destroys a lot of the more famous players, and it's all good. The trained ear in music is a gift in itself to know who's who in the book of Who's Who!! Who hoo says the wise owl!! lol Still Alive And Well, Johnny Winter, get ya some! RIP JW

Funny, saw this thread after I just won a copy of the Nautilus half-speed master vinyl pressing of Just One Night. Great album with a really tight band. For you Townshend fans, check out Crossroads 2 (Live In The 70's), Clapton does an amazing cover of Eyesight To The Blind leading into Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad. Awesome stuff. Love me some Clapton!
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Jesse's right, Clapton has "it." I grew up on Cream and spent endless hours in my youth listening to both studio and live albums. Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominos jams especially. Lots of stuff we take for granted now was invented by them, Hendrix, Zappa, Dylan and others. Saw Clapton later in life and was skeptical beforehand, but came away thinking that man is an absolute pro in all senses of the word. I've had that same definitive feeling after seeing Dylan, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney, and Johnny Winter for that matter, and a select few others that seem to be in a class above. Hard to compare them, kind of like arguing about who was the greatest NFL coach of all time.

This talk of Cream made me think of something I watched on Netfix "Beware of Mr. Baker" and yes it's about Ginger Baker (warts and all) watch it if you have Netflix and haven't seen it also unrelated to Clapton but interesting in it own right check out "Muscle Shoals" while your at it.

I'll check that out, thanks P-Man!
  • My take on EC and I've seen him w/ Cream 3x one time was w/ that freaking revolving stage which while crushing in as many people into a venue as possible was the worst sounding ss in concert history. When they faced you for that 10/ 12 seconds or so you got the full blast of the Marshalls then it sounded like a train going away from you. As far as technique he is clearly one of the most fluent players alive today w/ the likes of Jeff Beck,David Gilmor and Dave Mason. Jimmy Page way to hurkey jerky of a style. Now from Cream, to Blind Faith, to Delany and Bonnie, to Clapton solo to joining forces w/ Buddy Guy the man is the most respected guitarist in the world hands down. I did not say the best because like art it'self that's subjective and on any given night I'd rather see Jorma or even in his alive prime Jerry Garcia.

Beck was the most impressive. Garcia had just got out of the hospital when

Don't know that one. Wonder if Jim Gordon is on drums (one of the absolute greats!). He was on the studio album and later had a bout of . . .ummm, insanity. Killed his mother with a hammer and knife cause the voices told him to.
