After reading these posts and a couple news sites, I am still in disbelief. So sad. What a great loss. Such a wonderfully talented person who seemed high on life. I can't imagine what made him do it (if the reports are true).

There's a longer version of this but I can't seem to find it. Enjoy the "comedic genius"....

In no particular order, my favorite Robin Williams films...

    Good Will Hunting
    Good Morning Vietnam
    Dead Poets Society
    Patch Adams

It's so tragic that a man who spent the bulk of his life making so many laugh and filling them with joy, ultimately couldn't find his own inner peace.

one of the wittiest self motivated improvisational comics ever...what a loss

    RIP

Absolutely....and a shame he never really got over his addictions. Writing jokes, rehearsing them for a stand up routine, that's one thing, but when you can improvise like he could that's another level of talent rarely seen.

He also turned into a decent actor too. Why is it comedians make some good actors ? Loved Patch Adams, but he had many great roles.

Very sad. He and Jonathan Winters were, IMHO the finest improv guys ever, and both suffered from depression.

Yep, old JW had me in stitches many a time. Add to that list Don Rickles, and the duo of Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. Hell, the majority of that Carol Burnette show was improvised. Robin had a lot of mentors and the talent to expand on it.

Why do some comedians make good dramatic actors? I believe the Romans/Greeks, knew something about the Janus/Iavos "like" faced comic/tragedy that is life. Those whose comedy comes from a deep appreciation of how "absurd" and "paradoxical" the human condition is have no problem making the transition from one to the other. They also often experience the GREAT MELANCHOLIA that is life and death, perhaps, too deeply.

A great talent! So young! A shame! You get more jolted by these events as they get closer to your generation. Unfortunately where some of us are heading there will simply be "more and more" of this to come till we leave ourselves.

    RIP Robin!

His films were and are such a huge part of my life. Whenever my family gathers for the holidays it's always nonstop Robin Williams quotes from Mrs. Doubtfire & Hook. I was just watching Mrs. Doubtfire the other day and was glued to the screen. My kids love watching Hook just like I did growing up.

Heith Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and now Robin Williams. These guys had it all on the outside but struggled to the point of taking their lives with what was happening on the inside.

    RIP Robin.

Great commedian and actor! Loved his stuff (and not just the comedy!). He could make literally anything funny, very funny actually!

A couple of my favorite movies he was in are:

Dead Poets Society and What Dreams May Come. Both great movies! RIP Robin. I'm sorry, it came to this end.

Rickles was more insult humor, but funny as hell sometimes. I know Robin Williams mentioned Jonathan Winters quite often as a role model. Conway and Korman cracked each other up as much as the audience. We're really dating ourselves here. I doubt some members even know who we're talking about

Amen brother, a variety show that kept you entertained...with no foul language and people kept their clothes on too, go figure. What a stark contrast to how far we have fallen as a society.

I always admired those that can make you laugh, but also wondered if it came from a darker place within those who may not have had the best childhoods. Rodney Dangerfield comes to mind. A man no doubt was funny as heck, but admitted he has never really experienced joy in his life. He always attributed that to not feeling loved by his mom. Makes you wonder how many comedians today have some sort of issues in their past they draw from for their comedy, yet battle silently within themselves.

What upsets me about this is how much media this takes up, how my Facebook is filled with pages of this. You can't get the average American to consider a real issue for five minutes and form an opinion. But an entertainers death? News of the century.

So true, and if you really want some attention. Become a **** athelete. ("not that there is anything wrong with it.")

    RIP RW

Don't forget, Mork pre-dates Mork & Mindy. Mork started on Happy Days, and then Mork and Mindy spun off as a separate show. Go on youtube and look up the Mork appearances on Happy Days, too funny. Fonzie setting up Laverne on a date with Mork is just hysterical!

RIP Robin Williams, your admirers are countless.

I caught a repeat of Robin Williams' 2006 interview on NPR's Fresh Air today. In it (towards the end of the interview), RW explained how he had to go to "the dark side" to see the both sides of life....he also explained his depression during the interview....

    http://www.npr.org/2014/08/12/339823090/robin-williams-in-looking-for-laughter-you-have-to-be-deeply-honest

RW's passing hits hard here in the Bay Area. He was such a fixture....one can always read stories in the newspapers on his bicycle rides in Marin (RW's a road bike fanatic), him handing out candy to the neighborhood kids on Halloween, pumping up the fans at Giants games, or just him popping up, unannounced, at some tiny comedy club telling jokes. A lot of his movies are shot here as well (like Mrs. Doubtfire and Jack). He doesn't have an entourage (he's mostly on his bike) and people left him alone. He was one of us.
