Cracks me up that so many get upset over exercising freedom of speech in a way that does zero harm to anyone. Two parents at my school are active military and both had no problem with Marshall exercising his rights. Of course, both had read up on Marshall's statements and appreciated his stance on veteran's health issues. The only loser in Marshall's case is his wallet as he lost an endorsement. BTW, he has previously worn green cleats (and was fined by the league) in recognition of mental health issues.

Truly sad that so many eviscerate such a little thing, yet didn't care or voice their contempt for the Bundy clan that spoke and demonstrated treason (along with destroying the social fabric of the city of Burns, Oregon) with their takeover of the Mahler Refuge.

But you must remember that the NFL is a business. If you own a company and don't want things done at that company during working hours then it's the companies prerogative.

These stances right or wrong were done on company time.

Many of us would like a little separation of sports and leisure from politics.

There's an odd irony in this....we honor September 11th today, as we should. No one is complaining that we need to keep those memories of terrorism and tragic loss off the field - even though the conflict that underlies that tragedy is still very much relevant today.

However when someone wants to honor others that have died, albeit by identifying perceived injustices in our own police/legal system, it's unwanted and an invasion in our escape from reality. That's hard to stomach for many people.

I just think you all are missing the point. They are protesting because you all want to sit at home and ignore what is happening elsewhere in America. Sure, it's nice to be able to kick back, drink some beers, and laugh with friends on Sundays, but elsewhere in American communities there are funerals on Sundays and underlying social issues that make the sort of escape from reality you all seek utterly impossible. Some NFL players acknowledge that and think maybe making a difference starts with more people realizing there's a problem plaguing America within its borders as well as outside. The issues they are raising don't take a break for Sunday, after all.

Is that so bad? No one said you have to agree with the statement, but it seems odd to sanction people for exercising their right to make a statement. Plus it's a bad look, I think, as it seems to outsiders like Americans are just too damn busy watching their gladiatorial head-busting version of football to care about the petty issues of police corruption and the subversion of societal trust in its less affluent communities.
