Polk Audio 10's. Should i get them or get..

These popped up today but way overpriced considering the cabinets look like hell. Do these have the kind of wood you could refinish?
Also how do you know they are B's?
http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/4548740845.html -
More then likely B's. They have the SL2000 tweeter. They do look rough. You would probably want to upgrade the tweeters to RDO-194's at $100, rebuild the crossovers for approx $200, various other mods for approx $50, and re-veneer the cabinets for approx another $50 - $100. If price is no object and you want a project, go for it. !0's are nice speakers......just depends on what you want.

The problem is with those investment numbers, you might as well wait for a better speaker. No offense to the 10's, but I'd rather invest that in a pair of SDA's or RTA's than the 10's. Besides, if you do the work yourself, shouldn't you be able to recap those crossovers for less than $200? Aren't they a rather simple design?Home Theater/2 Channel:

Ad is still up but i still have not heard back from him. I wish they were at this point i would do his asking price.. -
Well I hope you get a chance to look them over. They're wonderful speakers once all the upgrades are done, and they present a more modern, narrow front. They dig deep too.Home Theater/2 Channel:

You're probably going to have to redo that bad repair to the cabinet if you get them. It looks like the damage might have broken the seal.
oh really I have only seen it from my phone so it doesn't look that bad I didn't even think it would have broken the seal. what would I have to do it the seal is broken -

If all goes well tomorrow. What would be your first upgrade?:)
-
+ 1 Skip - do the push test right when you go look at them. If the drivers dont come out & stay for at least 3 seconds then start going back to normal position-then you have a leak. Good luck on your search..

listened to them this morning. They sounded fantastic. Was really impressed. So I bought them. Chip in back doesn't appear to have broken seal. But I will inspect better later on.. Do what's the best Mod to do first:)

New Tweeters will give you instant gratification. The RDO-194-1 is the drop-in replacement, and you can upgrade the crossovers later. There's a conundrum however. The 11Ts can be upgraded to TLs, and use the better RDO-198-1 Tweeter, however the crossover must be upgraded and revised to accept the RDO-198.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Congrats kdblove, glad you got something you like! I have a pair of minty 11Ts and they sound great.
If you need a standard Polk binding post for that broken one, PM me your addy and I can send you one or two, depending on how many I can find around here. -
As far as mods goes, I'd wait a bit then do the "TL" mod that WMG mentioned above. I say wait a bit 'cuz you'll have to have the RDO-198 tweets at the same time you do the crossovers and you might want to start with some easier and cheaper mods that make a nice and very noticeable improvement in the meantime.
First, I'd do hurricane nuts (since Larry's rings are no longer available), Armacell gaskets, Dynamat Xtreme to the MW and PR baskets, epoxy the driver magnets and check and re-seal the cabinets internally, if necessary. Then, I'd spike the cabinets, giving great consideration to whether I wanted to replace the fiberboard pedestal with a nice and much more sturdy/stable hardwood one. Also, while doing the inside "first" things mentioned, I'd consider putting in new, much nicer binding posts.
WMG has recommended some very reasonably priced BPs and spikes in several threads around here. He's also linked in the right H-nuts and screws to use (from Parts Express). The Armacell tape can be picked up at Home Depot for about $8 for a huge roll. Dynamat Xtreme Wedge Pak (WAY more than enough than needed for a pair of speakers) available from Amazon or eBay for about $25. Various epoxies (about $5), sealants and hardwood railing posts can also be found at HD.
Good luck with it! -
Do you guys know how much the upgrade is for the RDO-198-1 and crossover?
-
Also are there posts that show these upgrades that you mentioned. Like the house nut, hurricane nuts, dynamat?

The 198s are purchased directly from Polk CS. They go for $48 each plus tax and free shipping (discounted from $60 +S/H for Club Polk members).
Crossover parts (capacitors and resistors) range from pretty cheap to a small fortune, depending on how much you want to spend. New inductors, if you so desire, to replace the air core one in the 11Ts can be had for about $25-$35, if I recall correctly. Lots of threads around here with some ideas on which ones members prefer. Dave (westmassguy) and Trey (VR3) (and others) are great resources for that kind of info and for doing the crossover mods for you if you'd like. They both have done them for many CP members and I have yet to hear a complaint yet on any of the results. -
Hey im glad you picked them up i was eyeing some like it on the bay. You will enjoy them. Get them up n running properly - then upgrade as you see fit to on your budget. IIRC you have some nice units to power them with & you may want to look into upgrades there down the road if need be . Enjoy your new speakers..

The "house nut"? I have an idea of what you mean there, but I'm not sure. Actually, there's only pictures of parts of him and a few of his fancy schNancy car he bought off of eBay. ;-)
Hurricane nuts - many threads around here - a recent one covered by westmassguy on some Monitor 10 mods (nspindel's thread).
Do a search on the Google. Use a few key words and follow with "site:polkaudio.com" and you should find what you want.
Dynamat - here's a good thread with a small sample of Larry's (Toolfan66) excellent handy work: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?97719-SDA-1C-s-are-ready-for-the-upgrade-bug& That's a favorite thread of mine since I now own the SDA-1Cs being worked on.
He also has good pics of the epoxying of the MW driver magnets as well as many other mods done to the 1Cs.
Another mod for your cabinets to consider is adding Sonic Barrier or Blackhole 5 to the inside backs of the cabinets, behind the MW drivers. Lots of threads on that here too. -
Meant H-nut. You mentioned earlier. .lol
Also thanks everyone for all your feedback and input. It helped immensely. I can say I wouldn't have gotten these without all your help. I'm really liking them a lot. Can't imagine with the upgrades. .
